“nice people, but understaffed and inconvenient location”
Not a 4 star hotel, in my opinion. Someone had pulled the cord out of our room phone, so we couldn't call room service, which is what we really wanted to do on a very cold night! When we checked in with the Aquariva, the pricey restaurant next door--the ONLY restaurant within walking distance--there was a two hour wait. So....we drove off into Portland and stumbled onto a pizza dive and had a much less expensive dinner. In the morning, our room hairdryer didn't work and smelled like burning plastic. The staff was very kind/friendly and did their best to help us out, but seemed a bit overwhelmed. The hotel is on a beautiful spot of the Willamette River, with gorgeous views--that was our consolation.
“Quiet and nice boutique hotel experience”
Watch out for the $19 per night valet parking service. You have no other choices at the property.
“my 1st portland visit”
This is a great hotel right on the bank of the river. The happy hour in the restaurant was great
“Going back soon”
We just got back from Avalon and we loved every minute. Staff was great, friendly and helpful. Hotel was in excellent condition and eco friendly, which we loved. Exceted we found the place and we will be going back next time in Portland
“i really enjoyed this time”
Very good service and hotel.
“Excellent Stay!”
We loved our recent stay at Avalon. We had stayed years ago and hadn't returned until recently. Avalon has matured well! They have an excellent staff, just ready enough without going over the top. The workout facility is excellent, the best I have seen in a hotel accommodation anywhere. You can also walk on the Willamette River trail just out the door. A sweet continental breakfast is served on each floor, near the elevator for you to take back to your room. The room itself was spacious, comfortable and had an excellent view deck looking over the river. One downside is they don't own a parking lot, so you must valet park. Our rate was less than any other downtown hotel so not a problem. There is no nearby self parking option. You can leave the car parked and take the trolley right into downtown with a short walk to access the trolley. Perfect. We will return in a heartbeat.
“Beautiful Hotel, great service”
I've stayed at several upscale hotels in Portland, and this one is my favorite. It is always clean, quiet, and the service is excellent. The only issue I have is with the restaurant. The chef is trying too hard to be avant garde. There is nothing simple on the menu, and most of the combinations do not work well together. The service is impeccable and the drinks are reasonable though.
“Pleasant stay”
I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel. IT was very confortable and pleasant. I think dome people forget that a 4 star hotel in Portland is a bit different than a 4 star hotel in, say Las Vegas. For a 4 star in Portland, it was very nice, clean and comfortable. The desk staff was very warm, nice and funny. The concierge staff was also very helpful. I enjoyed the walk along the Willamette. If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. However, if you want to be in the middle of the city, this hotel is a bit out of the way. Overall very satisfied.
“Very expensive for what it is!”
The hotel staff was friendly and the room was clean. But we had two vehicles there and the cost was an additional $20/night per vehicle that was not mentioned when I made the reservation or I did not see it. So that added $40/night. The rooms were okay, but not updated at all. No movie channels or DVD player available. We stayed here because it was close to OHSU and my friend was on bed rest. No refrigerators in the rooms. No microwave available. Continental breakfast was cereal, yogurt and muffins. No deliveries were available. Room service menu was messed up several times and they did not bring up plates, bottle open, the necessities that went along with dinner. Message was okay, but nothing special. Over all VERY expensive for what it was.
“Excellent Portland Hotel”
We really enjoyed this hotel. It was incredibly quiet for being so close to downtown, and the staff was very helpful.
