“Not Impressed”
Surrondings are pleasant enough. Found the room decor was outdated and had not be cleaned satisfactorily. Cobwebs on light fittings, dust in the bathroom. Very over priced
“The pool is fantastic!”
The best thing about the hotel is the pool, with still many people around you can still find some space for yourself. The hotel rooms are a little outdated but they are of a good size and frankly we didn't spend much time in there as we were out most of the day so we found it didn't matter. The air conditioning is freezing, it was really hot and muggy outside but we still had to keep the air con off because it was just too cold, there was a fan in the room as well which was sufficient to keep us comfortable. The buffet breakfast is way overpriced at a little over $40pp and the evening buffets ranged from $50-$90 per pp. We ate at the resort one night and went out for the dinner the other nights in Port Douglas and the food was really good. Some places are pricey but others you can still get a really good tasty meal at for a reasonable price I would recommend the resort if you like to have a nice big pool to swim in and don't mind the outdated rooms.
“Sheraton Mirage - A Bit Tired”
During the day the grounds are really gorgeous & the location whilst not totally convenient to restaurants/shops, is close enough if you wanted to visit. And of course its right on the beach :) A few things were odd: - at night it is incredibly dark as it is not very well lit at all and I thought could pose a threat to women walking alone. Even the carpark had zero lights. - The room although enormous was very dank & musty. - Nothing is sign posted - The overall plan of how to get from A-B is badly planned and doesn't flow making finding things a wee more difficult than necessary - The reception/lobby area seem a little eclectic with a confusion of oriental & Grecian decoration + a few other bits n pieces... almost like someone couldn't decide on a theme so just threw it all in... Overall we had a great time as we were out and about doing stuff and not sitting in our room or at the pool all day (although the couple of hours we did spend at the pool were lovely). We did hear its been sold and to be taken over by someone who plans a complete rennovation so perhaps the tired old dame we saw will sparkle again soon.
“Make sure you buy vouchers if you want to eat here”
We loved our weeks holiday in Port Douglas but everything is very expensive, including the prices at the Sheraton Mirage. If you want to eat there find out when the various restaurants are open and make sure you book. Kids can get a good deal if you sign up in advance otherwise prices are very high . The pool and gardens are fantastic and the beach beautiful and deserted. Otherwise not much in the way of things to do for the kids, no pool activities except learn to dive/snorkel. Other hotels would normally have free activities - cooking demos, aqua fitness, kids daily activities, boat hire etc. If we go back to Port Douglas we would probably stay in a smaller hotel and eat out more.
“"Blue lagoon"”
Ok - so it wasn't where they filmed that movie (that was an actual island) but what they call the lagoon at the Sheraton is blue and they go to a great deal of trouble to make you think it's a real lagoon - salt water, sand and all. It's also huge with loads of little nooks and crannies with lounge chairs so you can (at least when it's quiet) make believe you're all alone on your own little island. The lagoon is one very good reason to stay at the Sheraton - we checked out a few other resorts while we were up there and it's still overall, the best set up of the resorts of that kind - generous sized rooms, well-appointed bathrooms, great facilities. That said, the resort is getting on a bit and it tends to show. The impression overall is that the Sheraton Mirage is ready for a re-vamp - for a start, that pink-ish 80's paint-job has to go; same goes for the rather drab, poorly-lit hallways and lifts, and the rooms are showing signs of wear and tear (not to mention the crap tv in the room). But for the bargain-basement price, we were delighted and who wants to spend too much time inside anyway? It's also right on the beach so even if you can't swim in the ocean, it's beautiful to go for a walk on the palm-fringed beach and enjoy the spectacular views of mountains that go right down to the sea. If you're feeling energetic, you could even walk up the beach to town for a coffee although the resort has a shuttle that runs every half hour. Overall, highly recommended.
“It's good if it is what you're looking for”
If you don't mind being outside of Port Douglas a bit, and enjoy golf then I would suggest this place is great. Having said that there is excellent shuttle bus and car services that get you in and out of town very easily. The hotel decor etc is certainly quite dated but this didn't bother us too much as we were out an about a lot. The pool is amazing and the food is excellent. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. In fact I would say that about all of Port Douglas. It is a very friendly, customer-focussed town. All in all I would certainly recommend the Sheraton, particularly if you're a golfer and can get a good deal. Some cosmetic changes could really help it return to its hey-day.
“Not a 5 star experience”
This hotel was built in the 80's and is in need of a refurbishment. The staff were not particularly friendly. We were told that 95% of the staff were backpackers and the service reflected this. Food and beverages were overpriced for the quality the was produced. The "fabulous" North Queensland Seafood Buffet was very disappointing and not worth half of what was charged for it. On the plus side, the pools and lagoons were lovely and it was good to have the shuttle running into Port Douglas frequently (although not free) where we had some delightful meals.
“Total Relaxation”
LARGE grounds, well manicured tropical gardens. Very spread out but staff are more than happy to give you the "golf cart" ride treatment. Buffet breakfast is somewhat better than the usual hotel fare. Atmosphere is very laid back without being slack or sloppy. Some interesting options you can select from if you do not wish to have your room seviced daily, a very realistic choice when you are only 2 people. Bus shuttle service was a bit over-priced but otherwise good value for a great holiday in 4+star accommodation. A beautiful part of the world, with tours to the Great Barrier Reef and beyond well organised.
“this place needs an update badly...”
The outside of this property is beautiful and the pool area is lovely. However, it is clear that the roooms have not been updated in some time, if ever. Smells like mildew everywhere; the bathroom fixtures are old and rusted, furniture is out of style, the electronic controls for everything are out of date, and it is easy to leave the Do Not Disturb light on all day inadvertently, as we did. Consequently, we had no maid service, so I can't comment on the quality of the day to day maintenance. We would find another place to stay in Port Douglas if we ever go back.
“Best ever”
This hotel could not be faulted in any way what so ever. The staff were most helpful and friendly without being intrusive. Best service we have ever had in a big hotel. The lagoons were amazing. We will definitly be going back
