“Old and Tired”

The rooms are dated and not a hint of luxury at the price we paid over Christmas. The rooms aren't even serviced and it was like they did us a huge favour to change the towels at reception. A vain attempt had been made to smarten up the bathroom but that had failed too. We were booked in for four nights but left after two having found a brilliant apartment in Wharf St at half their exorbitant rate.

“Great if it's what your looking for”

My wife, baby girl and I stayed at this hotel in Sept 2011. We booked a 1 bedroom swim out apartment. Pluses were the room is fully equipped with fridge, dishwasher, cooktop, plates and utensils, 3 minute walk to beach, pools kept in immaculate condition. Negatives were the room was a little tired and not 100% clean (we had ants roaming our bench top, stained throw pillows and blocked vanity drain), a little far from town (although not an issue if you have a hire car), and no on site room service, bar or restaurant. But if your looking for a self contained apartment at a decent price, with a swim out pool (perfect for when you want to lounge poolside whilst the bub is asleep), then it’s hard to beat. Top tip – ask for a sunny side room when booking. The architects obviously didn’t take into account sun rise and sun set when designing this place.

Getting around
If your staying at the Oaks Lagoons it is a good idea to have a hire car. Free on site pakring available (car ports just outside rooms).
Dining
Bucci restaraunt in town does a mean linguini although a little bit pricey. Kids hour between 4 and 6:30pm is a great idea!

“Great Place”

After reading a few reviews when booking I was a little hesitant now having stayed for nine nights in a swimout one bedroom on the sunny side I couldn't fault the place. The building it self was fresh and clean, the staff on arrival couldn't have been nicer and were very pleasant throughout our stay. The apartment was very spacious and clean and had everything you needed to self cater . The couch in the lounge room was a little uncomfortable our only complaint. We would walk every day along the four mile beach which took about 40 minutes to walk into town, very pleasant. Shuttle buses ran every half hour from the resort next door another option. The Beach Shack which is within walking distance was a good place to have an evening drink or meal, very relaxed. There was a deli, fish and chip shop and video shop one block away so you could pick up the papers at the deli or milk etc very handy. Would highly recommend Oaks Lagoons would definitely stay again especially after the good deal we received by using expedia.

When to go
We caught up with a friend who lives in Port Douglas and he was saying that October is a good month to visit Port Douglas no wind. We stayed in August and the weather was very pleasant especially after the victorian winter.

“Great villa's for family”

Stayed for 10days in July, we booked a 2 bedroom pool apartment. Great size rooms lots of space for the teenage kids. Pool is right out side the rooms, not heated so I little cool in winter- ask for a north facing room. Not really walkable to town or supermarket , need a car. Although resort bus does operate $4 into town. In summary, large well kitted out apartment and clean.

“Couldhavebeenbetter”

Hotel was resonably well kept and tidy, downfall was that they were a bit far from the main drag - they do provide a free shuttle every 15 minutes but I personally would have like to be on the main street of town and avoided the hassel of it all. Also, don't expect your room to be cleaned / tidied if you are staying less than 7 nights. Had to go to reception to get clean towels / toiletries as we only stayed 5 nights they would not send housekeeping to the rooms. Some possitives - I liked the fact that you didn't have to go through reception when you came and went. The room we stayed in was accessable via the side of the building. At reception they had a collection of pamphlets for almost all activities available in the area and you could book through reception without having to pay them any fees or comissions on top of the brocher price. Also, all the staff that we encountered on our stay were very poilte and friendly each time we had to deal with them.

“Best relaxing holiday I have had”

When I booked Oaks Lagoons at Port Douglas, I was looking for a really relaxing holiday, in apartment accommodation in a resort environment out of the centre of town. And that was exactly what I got. I stayed in a one bedroom Deluxe Swimout apartment, which was clean, well equipped and comfortable. Having the convenience of the pool at my doorstep meant that I could relax by the pool, dipping in and out as I wished, as well as have the comfort of my home at my fingertips. The resort grounds, pools and facilities were clean and well maintained. Oaks Lagoons is a 5 minute walk from 4 Mile Beach and about 3 kms from the centre of Port Douglas so I would often walk into town either along the beach or on a meandering footpath off the main road. You can also hire a bike from reception if you want to and cycle around Port Douglas. The girls at reception were extremely helpful, booking tours and massages for me, as well as dealing with my requests promptly and without any fuss. I would highly recommend Oaks Lagoons for a relaxing get-away in gorgeous Port Douglas.

Area recommendations
Port Douglas is quite compact and easy to get around so deciding which area / neighborhood to stay in is really a matter of choice for the individual. I was looking for a relaxing holiday away from people and traffic, so chose to stay out of town. I also love walking and cycling (and I had a car), so the prospect of being 3 km out of town was not an issue. And because I was travelling on my own, I wanted to stay in an apartment where I could prepare my own meals rather than going out to restaurants for dinner every night. However, if I had young children and wanted to be close to a swimming beach and restaurants, I would recommend families stay in town.
When to go
If you are travelling to Port Douglas for a relaxing holiday, I highly recommend going there in May or June - out of school holiday period and when there are no box jellyfish in the water. The temperature is also perfect this time of year - 26 degrees celcius and clear blue skies every day, with temperatures falling to 16 degrees overnight. Perfect balance!

“GREAT family holiday”

We arrived at our hotel around 11.00am and was greeted warmly by the receptionist. After giving us the keys, we made our way to our room. We had booked a two bedroom swim out room for our family of 4. The rooms were large and spacious - two units in one. The kitchen a good size and the main bedroom was joined by a spacious study which made it seem all the bigger. The room was clean and the kitchen was well fitted out. The air conditioning units were put to good use as the temperatures were HOT outside. Air con units strategically placed in the important parts of the room eg bedroom, living. The hotel is situated a little further out from town, but if you have a car, its not a problem. The beach is around 100 metres walk to the end of the street. The gardens were immaculate. Staff were friendly and able to give tips of places to go for dinner etc. The concept of the swim out pool was well utilised and enjoyed. There are no restaurants within the hotel, but a good bbq area can be enjoyed and there are plenty of other places to eat in town. Overall we found our stay at Oaks Lagoons an extremely enjoyable family holiday adventure and recommend to others.

“Glorious pools, very spacious apartments”

Oaks Lagoons is a modern complex with 6 lagoon style pools - this is great as the pools are never over crowded. Staff were lovely - very friendly and helpful. The property is well maintained and has excellent facilities including ample free parking, BBQ facilities and plenty of outdoor tables, chairs and sun loungers. We booked a One Bedroom deluxe and were on the third floor. The apartments are VERY spacious. Our bed (King) was extremley comfortable and off the bedroom was a large study which had a desk and couch. The Kitchen was well equipped with cutlery, plates and dishes. There was a full size frigde, lots of cupboard space, two ceramic elements and a convection oven/microwave. We really enjoyed our stay at Oaks Lagoons, the only thing we would like to note is that it is a few kilometers from the actual town and probably not a comfortable walk in the heat. It would be more suited to people looking to self cater that have access to transport (rental car)

Area recommendations
Port Douglas is a great little town but we would also recommend staying a night up in the Daintree (Daintree Wild Bed & Breakfast has excellent facilites and access to their private zoo) and also take a day trip, or stay a night in the beautiful Palm Cove between Port Douglas and Cairns
When to go
Its the rainy season from December to February but the downpours are brief and often in the evening so take advantage of the off season rates at this time of year.

“Be aware...”

Although the courtyard is beautifully landscaped and maintained, New Delhi Commonweath Games-style management cheapens this property. Few services are available, front desk closes in the late afternoon, housekeeping is poorly trained. Expect a sub-par hotel experience. Be prepared to empty your own trash after a few days and bring your own toilet paper!

Dining
Beach Shack for great pizza - make a reservation! Finz for seafood dinner.
Outdoors or beach
Quicksilver provides a full-featured Great Barrier Reef experience.

“Very relaxing”

A great hotel just outside Port Douglas. We booked a swim out room and would definitely recommend paying the extra for this, it was great to get up and walk out of the room directly to the pool. The hotel was slightly outside the town centre, but there are 2 local bus services that run approx. every 15 mins until about 11pm and a good restaurant at the neighbouring hotel and about 10 mins walk away. All in all a fantastic holiday
