We stayed at Villa Marjela for 3 nights in May 2010. It is a small hotel in the suburbs between the Hayduk Stadium and the old town - which is a pleasant 10 min walk away. The rooms were a good size, clean and comfortable even though furnishings are slightly spartan. The breakfast was continental style - meats, cheese, boiled egg and bread - but all nice and fresh - and plenty of it.
The hotel has really friendly & helpful staff . They provided directions etc and also pointed out good local restaurants away from the tourist areas that were mainly frequented by locals. (We loved the seafood restaurant on the marina - a very pleasant 5 - 10 mins walk from the hotel - where you can watch the "catch of the day" and "daily specials" being delivered at the quay side)
It can be difficult to find the first time - particularly if arriving by car - so email when booking and get directions. Even the sat nav only took us within 200m and we could not see it. But the friendly locals pointed it out to us - without laughing!!
The hotel is set amongst the old communist style apartment towers so the neighborhood does not look all that flash - however, everyone we met in the area were welcoming, friendly and helpful even at the local shop.
The hotel can be hard to find if arriving by car - so email for clear directions - even the sat nav only got us within 200 metres and we had to ask locals where it was hidden.
A great place to stay in Split, very good value & we would stay there again!

WE hired this apartment for a 3 nights. We were a group of friends visiting Split. WE found the apartment no problem, but it is at the top of a block of residential apartments, so there is no reception. I would advise ringing the owner or at least emailing before you get there to arrange a time for them to meet you with the keys. There is no lift and quite a few stairs so would not be suitable for anyone with mobility problems but for anyone else is fine. The apartment was decorated to a good standard and had a nice little balcony with chairs and a lounger, so you could enjoy the view. The apartment had everything you would need and was very comfortable for us four ladies. The owner takes cash on arrival, so take either Euros or have enough Kunas to be able to pay, as there is no credit card facility. The apartment has tourist information brochures and free wifi access which was really useful.
The owner arranged a taxi for us back to the airport which arrived very promptly and was very reliable.
Overall i would recommend staying here for a couple, family or group of friends.
2 level self service apartment in fantastic location near the old palace in Split. No reception and no daily clean but owners were lovely & friendly and close by if you needed.
Restaurants, cafes, bars, grocery store, laundromat & best coffee in Split a short walk from the apartment! Queen size bed, bedroom dark & quiet, air-conditioning in bedroom and lounge which was very much needed in early September.
Free car-park a short walk from apartment, you need to make contact with owners prior to arrival in Split and arrange key pick up & parking etc.
A little gem - book it, you won't be disappointed!
Our very pretty and newly refurbished room and bathroom was just like the pictures. Quite small, so not a lot of room for luggage, 2 flights of stairs, but it was perfectly situated with only a 8 minute walk to promenade. Small fridge and complimentary tea & coffee making made our stay comfortable.
