Beautiful setting
Friendly, helpful hosts for a very clean and comfortable stay in park -like surroundings. Peaceful overnight stay for Pirongia walk next day. The breakfast was wonderful too.

Spacious and comfortable rural retreat
In a most pleasant and soothing rural location, the room was spacious and had everything we needed and a bit else beside. The cooked breakfast included in the package was generous and very nicely set the day off for the continuation of our journey

Relaxing getaway
What a magical place! John and Jenny are wonderful hosts. Our room was clean and tidy. The grounds are beautiful and tranquil. Highly recommended!

Comfortable stay
Overnight stay to see Waitomo Caves and Hobbiton. Hotel located just outside local town. Hotel in picturesque setting used for weddings. Very peaceful, big rooms, kind host and home cooked breakfast. There were sheep in the field which we could see from our room which our son enjoyed.

We had the room w/ en suite. The room was large clean and not only was the bed comfortable but also was the sofa that turned into a bed. The ambiance of the entire B&B is wonderful. The plus was not only the many areas to sit, relax, and contemplate but our host, John was very helpful. For breakfast, we had a choice of a hot or cold, or both and it was excellent.

Great B & B, friendly, generous hosts!
It was the perfect location and hospitality for our visit to Waitomo glow worm caves and bushwalking! Dinners were very good at the local tavern! Highly recommend it all!!

Lovely country stay

Great B&B, friendly and informative hosts
Jenny and John were most welcoming and made us feel at home. The breakfasts were excellent especially Jenny's homemade savoury muffins. We had an itinerary planned and Jenny kindly pointed us in the direction of some other sites not in guide book and that made our trip. Excellent.

Sad and disappointing, however expensive
We arrived and knew where I was, and if there were other options, I would not have put my bags down, my daughter said " Yuk, I don't want to stay here" The room which was the better one with an on suite, it as the others are, was tired, daggy without any atmosphere, just ugly hand me down pieces, There was tea and coffee in a cupboard I had to ask where to plug it in, as the host was showing me he pushed the tray down on a pair of $400 sunglasses! they survived! As for dinner options, The pub in the next town was shut for the evening, he said just go to the next town. In the dark, in a hire car with a 12 year old, I started to drive on a dark road to find somewhere to eat, by 15 minutes, my daughter crying,I went back to the B & B, by this time we had been away 30 plus minutes looking on dark roads for dinner. We then got proper directions to another town. We could wait to leave, breakfast the next morning was again disappointing, cereal boxes lined up, some fruit nothing fresh, only sugar favoured yogurt, we were offered dry english muffin, that may have sat on the plate for 10 minutes out came the cooked breakfast which had been sitting in the oven, dried up bacon, a sausage, half a tomato between two people and overcooked eggs. The coffee was good, however just plunger.

In over 8 years of hosting B&B guests from over 25 countries and up to 400 guests per year we are amazed at this level of criticism,[.you do get criticism] the likes of which we have never had before. Guests are always given directions for their dinner options. Breakfast had 4 cereal choices including 1 that was muesli. There was fresh fruit - pineapple cut up and feijoas[ picked off our trees] and stewed the night before. Our furniture is not hand me downs,we have chosen a more classic style in keeping with our colonial style house. This guest had requested a full cooked breakfast for her daughter and just a poached egg for herself which was exactly what was presented. We also had a family from Korea staying that same night who were very happy with everything. In conclusion, we hope this guest will find something satisfactory at other venues.

In July I booked a room with shared bathroom. My travel mate, a lady, said no sharing. I cancelled that reservation. I rebooked the same B & B en suite. I arrived in New Zealand on December 9th. On December 15th I received a email from Hotel.com restating my reservation at Somersal on the 18th.. I arrived at the B&B at 8:00 PM on December 18th and was told our rom had been to another guest. So I never stayed at the B&B. My rating is based on the fact that the owner some how became confused and left us ROOMLESS!!! Dec 18th and was told our room had been given o other people.

I welcome the opportunity to respond to this. Unfortunately there was a mix up with this guest's booking has they had made 2 separate bookings in different rooms then 18 days later a cancellation came through This did not show clearly at our end. On their arrival, I apologised and promptly found another local B&B who were able to take them - I then drove ahead to take them there with them following to meet the new host and they were settled within 30 minutes. The guetsts were certainly not left roomless

Beautiful.
This is a beautiful location. Everything outside is stunning to look at. Great views. Inside, we were greeted by the home owners (Their names escape me at the moment, sorry). They were very helpful and hospitable. They gave us a list of nearby restaurants and cafes. Although there is not a lot of food choices in this part of the country, you will not go hungry. The room was nice and very clean. We had an ensuite which I recommend. In the morning they made us a wonderful hot breakfast. We thoroughly enjoyed their company at breakfast. We had a wonderful conversation. We really enjoyed our stay.

Overpriced
Beautiful yard! Wifi very slow, barely usable. Advertised a sofa bed in room but there wasn't one. The bathroom was suppose to have a tub and shower, it only had a shower. Offered a great breakfast. Advertisement should include accept cash only!

Hi, we're really sorry you felt the Deluxe room was overpriced. You unfortunately must have got confused with our Master queen room which has a sofa bed and bathtub, these are not included in the Deluxe queen room. With regards the Wifi (Free of charge), we're in a rural area hence the slowness & unfortunately the Deluxe room is furthest from the router. We send out an email to all guests a week prior to arriving that we only accept cash, so I'm sorry this didn't reach you. It is also mentioned across all Expedia linked sites (Hotels.com) that we only accept cash. It was lovely to meet you & we're pleased you enjoyed the garden & breakfast. All the best.

Warm and hospitable hosts.
We gained so much knowledge from our hosts. We enjoyed walking in their gardens and loved having a pn outside table and chairs to relax with a glass of wine and talk about our travels.

This is a B and B not a hotel
Nice and peaceful B and B set in beautiful surroundings. The owners could not be more welcoming, with afternoon tea on arrival and every amenity in the bedroom. A beautiful family home shared with guests - free wifi and a great breakfast.

From US pastures to NZ pastures
The owners were incredibly friendly with great personalities. They provided everything my wife and I needed during our 2 night stay, including full access to the pastures to sneak a few pics of their playful sheep. Their garden-fresh veges and herbs gave each afternoon an aromatic sense of ease after touring and walking all day. Upon staying here the next time, I would again take the garage-converted bedroom!

Lovely spot, great hosts
You want top allow a full day (and 2 nights) to explore the adjacent peninsula, as the roads are slow and windy but the forests and ocean views and experiences are fantastic. Thanks Garth for the different recommendations about where best to explore. We avoided the theme parks in Rotorua and enjoyed Orakei thermals. Paeroa has some interesting antique stores and the adjacent gorge and gold mine were very pretty.

A lovely couple run the B&B and though we only stayed one night we left with a great feeling having had breakfast with them in the morning. The place is pretty easy to find if you're out Waitomo way and the rooms are big & spacious. Its all you can really ask for from a B&B!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Somersal B&B. John and Ginny were absolutely wonderful hosts and our room was extremely comfortable. I would highly recommend this location for anyone looking to stay in the Pirongia/Waitomo area. The grounds were absolutely lovely, the view from our window was breathtaking, and the opportunity for a more personalized stay (vs. a standard hotel room) cannot be over-stated. We will definitely go back to Somersal anytime we're going to be in the area. Many thanks to Ginny and John for welcoming us into their lovely home/B&B.

Quiet, Secluded, Romantic Get-Away
A great B&B with great hosts. We felt at home during our entire stay. We particularly enjoyed the great conversations we had with our hosts and the well-kept gardens on the property. If we are ever back in this area of New Zealand, we will definitely come back. The one thing that wasn't provided during our stay was WiFi. Our hosts offered their land connection when we needed it though.

A lovely country retreat with beautiful gardens some completed and more in progress. Congenial hosts. Nice location for a country travel stop between Aukland and New Plymouth and handy for people wanting to visit Waitomo Caves. Friendly sheep and rabbits in the garden. Very adequate lovely cooked breakfast.
