“Old And Not Well Maintained”
The rooms are very, very small. Plumbing and heating were big problems in our room. Ancient wall radiator system did not work. Bathroom faucet was falling off the sink. Bathroom is so tiny it's humorous. And surprise!!!! there is a $20 per night parking charge. I didn't feel safe --after dark -- walking to and from the concert we attended. Given what we went through, room rates are way too high. Not recommended.
“Good hotel for price”
Hotel was close to convention center. No room service which I missed. Loved the free Wi-Fi. Was close to restaurants and a Subway. Walls are thin. Like the old world ambiance. Would stay at again. Very close to metro.
“The Creepiest Place I've Ever Stayed”
I don't know whether the hotel is trying to maximize its reputation as a haunted hotel, but everything from the decor to the lighting made it creepy as heck. My colleague had to pay a $20 fee to move to a room that wasn't so noisy. They really need to bite the bullet and renovate.

Great Trip
“Slap in the Face”
Selected this hotel due to the proximity to Convention Center and price. Pre-paid 6 days through Expedia. I have no issue with the hotel charging $3 for each water bottle consumed in the room. I had to leave the hotel a day early; I asked casually if the hotel might waive the $3 water bottle charge in light of the fact that I was giving them the room back a day early already paid for. The response I received curtly was that the hotel would agree to waive the customary $50 early departure fee! I advised then that the room was pre-paid, and I was not seeking any reimbursement for the last unused night's stay, but the clerk insisted I was still responsible for a $50 early departure penalty. Just downright silly.
“This is a historical hotel rooms are too small besides elevator, etc.”
Not satisfy with this hotel at all. Every morning I took a shower I had to be very carefull that the next door neighbor was not opening the faucets because if they turn on the faucets I will burn myself. Bath tub seems to be clogged up.
“Antique setting made it quaint”
I believe if someone wanted the best of the best they would be disappointed with the San Carlos. I considered the age and the heritage of the hotel and appreciated the setting it provided. I would defintley go back and stay if my trip needed to be in the Down Town area of Phoenix. I would change one thing though, they should have their restraunt open for Dinner. There are plenty of venues to eat at around the down town area but it would have been nice to catch dinner there.
“Would return, way too cool of a hotel”
Very impressed with the renovations and still being able to keep the old look. Bathroom rather small, but it did the job. Would return and stay there again.
“Nice Historic Hotel”
I enjoyed my stay at the San Carlos. Nice history. The walls were a bit thin, and you could hear out into the hallway very easily. Had some rowdy guests one night at 2 am, but hotel security was all over it and threatened to kick them out if they didn't quiet down. Not the hotel's fault, and they did a great job handling it. Lots of little pieces of history marked with little plaques. Hotel was in a great location, within walking distance of lots of restaurants and the convention center...and the price was outstanding!
“Could have been better”
Nice historical hotel but there needs to be some improvements to it. Staff needs more customer service training. The bathrooms need to be bigger. My room was right next to the ice machine and it made noice all night long. Parking was too expensive. No gym. Cable was not good. Old TV. Bed was comfortable and so were the pillows.
