The capital of Dutch St. Maarten, Philipsburg is a bustling city with shops, restaurants, nightlife, and hotels. A popular tourist attraction is Fort Amsterdam, a 17th century Dutch military outpost. Though all military communications ceased in the 19th century, it was used as a signaling and communications station until sometime in the 1950s.
