“not what I would call 5 star but comfortable enough!”

The Marriot is on a hill in Wadi Musa with great views over the Petra mountains. It's a 10 minute taxi ride to Petra gate. Rooms are quiet and comfortable but our aircon did not work so we had to move rooms. The food is ok but nothing to rave about and quite pricey. All the staff were very friendly except for one receptionist who was awful refusing to be helpful when we needed to change rooms (insisting there were no other rooms when there was one) and told us we couldn't buy Jordanian dinars at the hotel but on check out we discovered that we could. As there is little choice in decent hotels in this area it is perhaps the better one but a bit of competition would do it good.

Area recommendations
We went November 2010,Petra is stunning but be aware - it costs 50JD (£50) per person to enter for a day and £55 for 2 days - they do not accept credit cards so you must have the cash. This includes a horse and guide but the horses only take you to the entrance of the Siq which is a 10 minute ride and then you must tip. If you are staying 2 days you must try the alternative route into Petra via an old wadi which starts just at the entrance to the Siq, it takes 1 hour 30 minutes to walk (includes scrambling down rocks and going through narrow passageways) but is so isolated and stunning - go with another person. You are told it is not allowed without a guide, which will cost £50 but is completely untrue so beware of the sharks. Taxis from the Marriot cost £5 but the on return trip they will try to charge you £8 - I used the line "ma'alesh" which means "forget it" and got the return for £4! Wear suitable walking shoes as we walked 5 hours a day to get through Petra and up to the Monastery at the other end.
When to go
We went November 2010 and it was not too busy, perfect 26 degrees with a cool breeze
Getting there
from Amman airport the only way to Petra is via taxi (no passenger rail service exists). The taxis cost 65JD and it's a fixed government price. It takes 2 hiurs 30 minutes to reach the Marriot in Wadi Musa

“A very good choice.”

We had an arrive late and leave early stay at the Petra Marriott. So, we did not sample all the hotel had to offer. We arrived at 10PM and still found more than one restaurant open for dinner. The food was varied and good for dinner, as was breakfast in the morning. Our luggage was stored carefully and without trouble while we toured Petra. Unless one decides to stay in the middle of the town so that walking is an option, the Marriott is an excellent choice.

“So disorganized”

The hotel is so disorganized it's ridiculous for a Marriott property. The hotel lost most of my laundry that was put in the night before for next day service. When I did not receive it the next day I was told I would get it the following day, my checkout day. They did return some of it, lost the rest, and what had been returned to me was returned still wet. As compensation, I was told the hotel would reimburse me for the lost items but they never did. Additionally, I had prepaid for the room but they charged me for it anyway so I am now dealing with that. The Bedouin restaurant food was good however everything else in the other restaurants was tasteless. The hotel is an approximate 10 minute uphill drive from the entrance to Petra and town so while it is in a quiet location, you are quite limited in food choices. We stayed our last night in Petra at the Movenpick which is an excellent hotel. I have always enjoyed Marriott properties previously but this one makes me question how they oversee their properties. I do not recommend this hotel unless there is absolutely nothing else available.

Area recommendations
The area closer to the entrance to Petra has many small restaurants and shops but is noisier due to all the tour buses going through on the way to Petra. Where this hotel and a few others are located is up the hill and is quiet with a nice view but transportation is needed to eat out or shop. Quite isolated location.

“Great Hotel”

Great hotel, nice staff, clean rooms. They upgraded me without me asking to a wonderful room with an amazing view for no additional charge. I would defiantly stay here again.

“Would go again”

the hotel was for oriental circumstances and for the fact, that Marriott didnt build it but bought it after years in a good condition. the people were very, very friendly - only the "overbooking" of the hotel irritated a little bit. the food and the ambiente was very nice!

“Not impressed....”

Too far from Petra site, courtesy shuttle only ran a few times in the morning and a few times in the afternoon. The rest of the time you have to get a taxi as it is far too far to walk and I like walking normally and it was too far even for me! Bathroom in room was 2-3 star rather than five star, shower was broken. Tiles were filthy. Asked for shower to be fixed, noone ever came. Lift well next to us woke us up all night as lift was noisy (worryingly sounded broken). Food in the italian style restaurant was awful. Bar food was ok. Views of sunset were nice but not enough to recommend a stay here. This absolutely is not a five star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. I would recommend staying at the Movenpick or Petra Guest House as they looked far superior and are adjacent to the entrance to the site.

Area recommendations
Stay walking distance to the site, if you want five star go for the Movenpick.
Traveller's tip
2 days is enough, but one day not enough to properly see Petra. There is a lot of hiking but it is absolutely worth it. Totally amazing. Enjoy x
