“Fantastic situation”
Grounds of the hotel are wonderful. Large quiet shady garden in which to sit and relax with a glass of wine. Great swimming pool. Room in Villa Ada was spacious with great views across the valley. Pleasant bathroom and shower. Good breakfasts. Friendly English-speaking staff. When driving from the airport, a satnav and a good map were helpful to locate the hotel. Restaurant quite good - but they should warm the plates when serving hot dishes.
“It really is a Castle”
Yes it really is a castle. Its got turrets and a long drive - couldn't see a moat - and masses of history. Although it takes a bit of finding from Perugia, it is definitely worth the perseverance. The main building is the castle, and then there is an adjoining building - presumably the servants quarters, where we stayed. Our bedroom was air conditioned which is essential in July, and was very comfortable with a well stocked bathroom. A little walk away there is a heated swimming pool with a view to die for. Even my wife had a swim it was that warm. Back at the hotel, make certain you have at least one evening meal, which we had outside in the court yard. You may need a little patience as the service may be a litle slow - but you're on holiday. The food is of an extremely high standard, although it doesn't come cheap. All the staff were extremely helpful, but brush up on your Italian or take a phrase book, as their English is rudimentary to say the least. We would definitely go back if holidaying in the area again.
“Treated like Kings and Queens”
The Castello dell'Oscano was a great place to stay during our visit to Umbria. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The first night we arrived, we were a little hungry but didn't want much to eat. The staff prepared a plate of cheeses, meats, and bread for us and they set up a place for us to eat in the library. Their library is phenomenal, by the way, with books dating back to the 1700s in several different languages. Our last night we ate in the hotel restaurant for dinner. The food was excellent and very fresh. Our waiter was very friendly, too, and was able to assist us in translating menu items that our limited knowledge of the Italian language prevented us from doing ourselves. :-) I would definitely recommend the restaurant for dinner at least one night. Breakfast was served every morning until around 10:00 and consisted of breads, pastries, fruit, and assorted meats and cheeses. Fresh juices and water were offered; and tea, cafe, and cappuccino were made to order. The hotel is close to Perugia, and detailed maps are available in the reception area to help with trip planning. It is also near Assisi, which is worth a visit. The only down side that I can think of is that the bathroom was hard to heat. The tub was a cast tub, and it was cold! The water was hot enough, though, that you could fill the tub and let it warm up before getting in. It was nice having a tub...most of the hotels we have stayed in while in Italy only have showers.
