Friendly staff in a good location

Posted 07-Aug-2014
We had a very good experience at the Hotel des Mines. The room was small (pretty much a given in Paris) but comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. I liked how they recognized us and knew our room number after only a day or two into our stay. Our only complaint was that the wifi didn't really extend to our room, which was on the fifth floor. Other than that, this is a great hotel for the tourist who is looking for something located within walking distance of most major attractions in Paris.

Close to Luxembourg Garden and the "B" metro line.

My family (2 adults and 2 children) stayed here for three nights. We did not spend much time at the hotel. However for sleeping it was great. We were on the third floor, courtyard side room. You can hear the metro rumble, in a distant muffled way. We live in the middle of nowhere USA and our house is extremely quiet at night. We all slept well at this hotel.

A clean, well-located place.

Pros: See above.
Cons: See above.
Location: See above.
The location is ideal, being a two-minute walk from the Jardin de Luxembourg and a fifteen-twenty minute walk for the Gare de Montparnasse and its fine, reasonably priced restaurants. Tourist schlock is far away. The rooms might feel small for North Americans accustomed to vast spaces, and the spare walls might feel empty for those who need those mass-produced landscapes found in US motels. However, the spaces are immaculate, bathrooms are commodious, the double windows keep out the Boul'Mich traffic noise, and above the beds are lights for reading in bed. One feels the passage of the RER trains below, but at the 3rd floor and above, they provided a soothing, faint rumble familiar to those with experience midwest. The breakfasts are fine and filling, and the staff patient and helpful.

4 day stay - single traveler

Pros: how close it was to a metro station.
Cons: Staff can be more helpful with their foreign travelers.
Location: The metro station is close by.
Location of the hotel was a 1 minute walk close to the Luxemburg metro station. So that was very nice. But, the hotel is on a fairly quiet street. Being by myself, it would have been nice to have a hotel in a location where I could go later at night. The staff spoke English so that was nice and helpful but they didn't go out of their way to give me information. I had to ask about internet service and maps and breakfast. They didn't tell me that the hallway lights are always turned off and I have to find the switch and turn them on.

Highly recommended. Excellent location, and my room was surprisingly large (by Paris standard, indeed).

Great location

Very easy hotel to get to from the Gare du Nord, near Luxembourg station on the RER. Minutes away from the beautiful Luxembourg gardens and 10 minutes brisk walk to Notre Dame. staff friendly and spoke in English despite my attempt to converse in French! Slightly old and tired feel to the hotel but rooms were comfortable and clean, bathroom very small indeed but did have a very powerful and hot shower. I would certainly stay here again.

A Wonderful Place to Stay.

We were there as a family. The staff and hotel's location in the Latin Quarter were fantastic. Luxembourg Gardens is literally across the street. There are a number of RER and Metro stops nearby making it easy to get anywhere. Our 5th floor room was wonderful with a window on Bd St Michel. The only draw backs: there was only one electrical outlet in the room; it was in the bathroom. The wifi was as much miss as hit. When informed--the staff would reboot the system and all would be well. We would definitely stay again...with and extension cord :-)

Lives up to the ratings on Expedia.

Pros: Basic, clean, comfortable, quiet.
Location: Luxembourg gardens <2min walk away, easy walk to Notre Dame and the Latin quarter. Very easy connection via RER to CDG airport.
I had low expectations of a 2 star hotel, but the Expedia reviews suggested it defied the star rating, and I think they were right. I was staying for a 4 day business trip. My room was on the second floor at the back away from the street. It felt a little cell like at first as the windows were high and part-frosted, but as I was spending little time in the room this was no issue. The room was basic but well maintained, and it the bathroom were spotlessly clean, and the bed was firm and comfortable. It was very quiet, which I imagine may not be the case for street-side rooms. The fairly regular rumble of the RER line below, that others have mentioned, was neither loud nor intrusive on the second floor. I slept very well all three nights, in fact far better than I usually do in hotel rooms. The breakfast (not included) was E10. I didn't have it, though it looked okay, but I imagine you could do better for the same cost at a nearby café. Reliable free Wi-Fi.The staff were pleasant and helpful and the whole stay was completely without fuss.

Good location close to the entrance to RER B line, Luxembourg gardens and Senate. Noise from the Metro ventilation shaft will keep you awake till two am.

Excellent Stay

Very pleased with Hotel Des Mines. Room was clean and up to date (small, but that is typical of French hotels of this class). Great location near Luxumbourg Gardens, walking distance to many sites (eg Louvre, Notre Dame) and easy bus and Metro connections to train stations, Eiffel Tower. Pleasant neighborhood with many good restaurants and cafés (better to have breakfast at nearby cafés than 10 Euro continental breakfast at hotel). All desk staff spoke at least some English, and were very helpful with directions and information. We would stay here again.
