“Great location, but watch your wallet!”
Palatinius is in the perfect location, right on the main walking street in Pecs, across from several restaurants. We booked a double w/o air conditioning, and it was a hot day. When we checked in, the manager offered us a "special" (but still outrageous) rate to upgrade to an air conditioned room. We declined, so he said that we would only have to pay the city tax when we checked out. Our room was fairly recently remodeled to a state of 1970's Holiday Inn, and was hot and humid, but clean. When we checked out, the same manager told us that we had to pay the "regular" rate for our airconditioned room. I reminded him that we had declined the AC and would certainly not pay for it. After a short argument, he gave up. (I didn't even mention the "special rate" gambit; if you're going to try to cheat people, you ought to remember what story you told them!) So, if you get a good price, go ahead and book this hotel for its location, but get everything in writing!
“Best location in Pecs”
Palatinus is an old and elegant hotel, its location cannot be better: right in the middle of downtown in the turist district, close to most of the attractions. The breakfast buffet is really awesome!
“Good Hotel for the price.”
This hotel was nice for the price. It's located outside the city center but is very close to the metro. Traveling from this location was very easy. There is a nice mall across the street from the hotel. Service was good at the hotel but extras were more expensive than usual. If booking this hotel again I would pay to get internet and breakfast included in the price.
“Perfect location”
The rooms are clean, though a bit small and shabby. The location is great and the staff very helpful.
“Not "as good as it gets"”
Although our guide book had called this place "as good as it gets in Pecs", this cannot be correct-- For instance, the hotels across from the theatre appear far more modern. The rooms are like summer camp dormitories: tiny area; old furnishings; two separate small 'Red Cross' style beds; old carpeting; no AC; faded colors. As any visitor will note, this is in sharp contrast to the lavish foyer of red carpet and marble columns. It seems that nothing has been changed since the '50s, including the toilet flushing mechanism.
“Mixed review ...”
The hotel has an excellent location, & many pluses including beautiful exterior & lobby, stunning views from the very comfortable sun terrace etc.. The room I stayed in was in need of revamp however & the heat/no air conditioning/very noisy fan combination meant that even in mid May it was very uncomfortable to sleep in (or rather to try to sleep in). I believe there are some updated rooms available (for a higher charge) - would go for one of those next time, or somewhere else altogether. I also ate in the restaurant in the evening - food was ok when eventually my order was taken & it arrived, but just ok so overall a disappointing evening. I'd had lunch further down the road earlier in the day & it was lovely (forget name).
“Nice hotel, but . . .”
There are significant pluses and minuses associated with this hotel. On the plus side is that it has a great location and the lobby and restaurant are quite elegant. Very "old Europe" look and feel. Also the hotel has parking if you are driving. There are several negatives, however. First is that there is no air conditioning (at least in the room that I had). Opening the window is your only option and even then there isn't enough of a cross ventilation to do much good. It was warm, but not hot when I was there. In the heat of summer, I think this would be a real problem. The room furnishings look like they have been there since Stalin's day. Bathroom had tub and hand shower and a faucet-like toilet flush mechanism. Navigating to the hotel garage is a challenge due to one way streets. I would suggest trying to get the hotel to give you directions via fax or e-mail using Google maps. The hotel's address is on Kiraly utca, but this is a pedestrian zone where cars aren't allowed. The garage entrance is around the corner off of Szechenyi Istvan ter. The most obvious route to the square from highway 6 (the main way to get into Pecs from the north) runs into a short street that is open only to buses and taxis. So you have to go around and approach from the north on Hunyadi Janos utca. When you come into the square from the north you will see signs for the hotel's garage. Parking is extra and quite costly when compared to prices for other things in the area.
“Hotel in Pecs”
Centralissimo e molto suggestivo.
