“Palermo for fun”

The hotel staff was very helpful, but their English was limited so we all had to work to communicate. The breakfast was quite good with fresh coffee cake/pastry and fresh fruit everyday. We would happily stay there again

Area recommendations
The street markets were really fun to walk through, and we really enjoyed the Cathedral and Theater.

“Excellent, reasonably priced option in Palermo”

We got a fantastic deal on a very nice, comfortable room. The shower and bed were both great. The free wireless in the lobby was a huge bonus, as was the large sunny terrace right across the hall from our room. But the best part was the breakfast! It was an enormous, delicious, hot and fresh spread of every breakfast item you can imagine. Fantastic deal.

Area recommendations
Palermo is a great city to explore on foot - there are little alleys with markets all over the place. If you are looking for cheap eats or a great outdoor cafe/bar scene, head to the streets directly across from the large theater. (Very close to this hotel.)

“Counting Down to a Return to Mercure!”

The Mercure Hotel in Palermo is a fantastic place to stay for a couple of days or even much longer. The staff: Friendly and helpful. Very pleasant to deal with. The room: Nicely appointed with a great, big bathroom! The first shower in Italy that I was actually excited to jump into. The single room had a very comfy full-sized bed and was roomy. The carpet needs replacing, but I believe the hotel is in the middle of an upgrade. Tech: Relatively cheap wireless is available in the rooms, but the lobby has free wi-fi which is convenient and a real rarity that should be taken advantage of. Breakfast: Don't get coffee - ask for a cappuccino! Pretty typical breakfast spread, but the breakfast room is nice and bright. Location: Close (10 min. walk) to the Teatro Massimo, closer (5 min.) to cute shopping and delicious and diverse restaurants. The hotel is close to a good selection of Middle Eastern and Italian restaurants, which is nice given Palermo's cultural history. You'll know Palermo well and see a lot of it if you walk from the hotel to the historic district (30 min. fast-paced walk). The neighborhood is quiet after 11PM but I always felt safe as a young woman on her own. I highly recommend this hotel. I was there for 6 days and would have happily stayed for a month! Didn't want to leave, and cannot wait to return! P.s. I stayed at the Grand Hotel et Des Palmes last year, which was really lovely, but I will be returning to the Mercure.

Area recommendations
"Arts" District (Via Bara al''Olivella) - Great places to shop and eat that are truly Sicilian and Palermitan. Go to Il Culinario and tell them Mirandolina sent you! Historic District (Palazzo dei Normanni, Cattedrale di Palermo) - Fantastic sites but early closing and fewer options for restaurants. The Port - real fishermen at real work. A sight. University of Palermo/Piazza Garibaldi - Beautiful and aristocratic area. Galleria Regionale della Sicilia is there and should not be missed! Monreale (20 min south of Palermo, bus 389 from Piazza Indipendenza) - The world's most beautiful mosaic cloister. The best site to understand the diverse and rich cultural history of Sicily.
Getting around
Walking is the best way to see Palermo! The inter- and intra-city bus systems are well-run, reliable and comfortable. Taxis are expensive and not really worth it unless the bus absolutely does not reach your destination.
Must see
Monreale! The Cappella Palatina at the Palazzo dei Normanni. Galleria Regionale della Sicilia. Oratorio di Santa Cita.
Dining
Il Culinario Il Rintocco, Via dell'Orologio, 14 Go to the Teatro Massimo, turn around, walk straight down that street. First restaurant on the left. An old man will be shouting the day's specials. I recommend the pasta with mussels and clams.

“Phenominal location, service and value”

We were very pleased with the location, service and value of the Mercure. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. We walked to many of the local sites, including great shopping, restaurants and services. Each morning we were accomodated with a full breakfast with fresh fruits, cereals, meats & cheeses, breads, juices and drinks. Although coffee and tea were readily available, the staff was very accomodating in providing cappuccinos and esspressos. In the evening an assortment of snacks were presented at the bar to compliment the libation of our choice. Although there are parking garages in the close proximity, we had no problem finding on-street parking (it may have been the time of year). I highly recommend this hotel, especially if you plan to see the island of Sicily. We toured almost the entire island during our ten-day visit and were welcomed each time we returned to the Mercure; it was very comforting. The Mercure is a true value for those who don't plan to lounge around their hotel for the entire trip (we did relax for a couple days and enjoyed it immensely).

Area recommendations
Palermo offers much to see: We visited catacombs, the symphony and much of "Old" Palermo and enjoyed them all. However, a short trip to neighboring Mondello and Monreale will provide you a great beach experience and mountain-top town experience, respectively.
What to pack
Be sure to check the weather forecast: We packed for cool weather and it was beautiful. We had temperatures between 68 - 74 defrees.
Dining
We visited restaurants a couple within a block of the hotel: Osteria al Cancelletto, Trattoria 'a Cuccagna and the Grand Hotel et Des Palmes. Although the Grand Hotel et des Palmes was too expensive for us to stay, it was fantastic for drinks and dinner (if you go for drinks, you'll receive incredible service from their #1 Barman, Antonio Reginella; he is the most professional I've had the pleasure to have serve me).

“Not up to its Star rating”

This hotel is not up to its star rating. It's relatively small and even the renovations (which appeared to have merged multiple rooms together to make larger ones) haven't helped. The breakfast buffet was quite simple and the same every day. Not enough variety to make much difference.

“Mercure Hotel, Palermo”

I enjoyed my stay at the Mercure Hotel very much. The traffic in Palermo is very cahotic, but the hotel was very nice. I didn't particularly like the modern furniture in the lobby.

“Hotel vicino al centro, comodo per visite turistiche e commerciali purtroppo non ha wifi .”

La piccola colazione non e ben organizzata, manca sempre qualche cosa nel buffet. Per il resto non ha il carattere di un albergo di quattro stelle. Il personale direttivo non si vede se non congregato al bar leggendo il giornale.il personale e molto rumoroso e preferisce parlare al telefono. Difficile uscire dallo ascensore perché le cameriere parcheggiano davanti alla uscita.

Area:

Palermo, Italy: Sicily’s capital stands on a curved bay at the foot of Monte Pellegrino. It’s a chaotic, ebullient place with masses to see. Puppet theatre, street markets and marzipan fruits are typical Palermo treats. Get your bearings at a major intersection, the Quattro Canti. Don’t miss the superb mosaics in the Cappella Palatina, or Serpotta’s stuccowork in the city churches. The mummified corpses in the Capuchin catacombs are the stuff of nightmares.
