“good, convenient and friendly but not perfect”
Hotel is on the high street close to all major attractions and shops. the building is well maintained but old - it creaks and is not sound proof (take ear plugs). room was reasonably clean but not perfect. I recommend but it's not perfect.
“Great location in Oxford”
We were allocated a ground floor room with windows onto the carpark. As we were staying only 1 night with purpose of visiting our son, this was not a major issue but for longer stays would need to specify upper-floor room with a view. There was no lift to the downstairs room either - but after struggling down stairs and fire doors we discovered there was a door onto the carpark accessible from inside. Room itself was smallish but quite comfortable and clean. It was quite hot and stuffy but okay after we opened the window. Wi-fi access comes at a charge, which is unacceptable these days. Our room rate didn't include breakfast but I wouldn't bother anyway as there are plenty of reasonably priced places nearby. Overall, hotel with reasonable facilities in excellent location, but ask for upper-level room.
“Excellent option in Oxford”
Great staff, very friendly and welcoming. When I first arrived the first room I was presented with had a bed that was too soft for me and the staff offered me two other rooms to look at and I found a bed that suited. The hotel is in a traditional old building - expect narrow corridors and the odd squeaky floor board. The building does however add character. It's not perfect but is very comfortable and is great value. (I have stayed at several other hotels in Oxford and would happily return to this one.)
“outstanding”
I had a wonderful stay in Oxford at the Mercure Eastgage. It is very conveniently located near tourist sites and Oxford University. I visited with professors at the university and toured Oxford, so the hotel was extremely convenient for both. The hotel service was outstanding. The hotel is also near restaurants and shops so you don't need to go far to find what you want. The breakfast at the hotel is also first rate. I could not speak more highly of this hotel.
“Nice stay in Oxford”
Traveling as a family, our only option was to reserve 2 rooms. Not sure if family rooms are available. Nice location, easy walk to all of Oxford attractions. Very helpful staff. Rooms spacious and comfortable.
“overpriced”
The room was nicely furnished but cold and draughty, especially in the bathroom with no way for the guest to contol the heating. The minibar was empty and unstocked with the option to order 'packages' for stocking which had to be prepaid, regardless of whether you use all items in the package or alternatively using room service. This is not really providing a minibar service, which should be provided at this level. For the price and 4-star I would expect these minor things to be provided for the guest comfort. Otherwise the furnishings were very pleasant and service was friendly and efficient. Location is central and convenient.
“Great city centre hotel”
just off the High Street in quiet lane. easy walking distance to restaurants etc for the evening and walking tour of city centre in the morning. very good breakfast. The room was nicely furnished and the bed was very comfy. We thought it was excellent value for money
“Lovely location in a University town.”
We visited Oxford at Christmas-time just after a snow fall. The hotel was ideally situated near many of Oxford University's colleges and was convenient to lots of shops, restaurants AND a Starbuck's. Although our room was on the small side, the bathroom was a good size. The hotel's hallways are narrow, so maneuveing luggage is a bit inconvenient. But, that won't stop us from staying here again.
“The Oxford Hotel I will be returning to, in future!”
A first-class stay in every way. The staff are helpful and friendly, the rooms large and comfortable and the general atmosphere is right for a hotel of its age and kind. The location is very central, yet not noisy. If you want to avoid a £15 breakfast bill, so be it - there are plenty of coffee houses around the Eastgate. But if you do have breakfast in your room or in the restaurant, it can set you up for the rest of the day. Definitely, somewhere I would recommend!
“good competent hotel”
This is a good, competent hotel with a terrific location. The front desk staff strike me as overworked, leading to them being a bit stressed and tending to think in terms of 'us vs. them'. But they're fundamentally excellent individuals and went out their way to help me. Generally recommended.
