“Poor value for money”
Very average hotel for rates charged
“Excellent, Central Location”
This hotel is in an excellent location, the centre of Oxford, next to bus stops etc. But it is decidedly not a five star hotel, only if the AA's classification has recently changed!. Ar best, it is a four star hotel. I wonder whether it trades on being universally known and its Morse connection! The staff wereall very friendly, obliging and polite. Overall, a pleasant stay which I would certainly repeat.
“Cosy but unwelcoming: a paradox!”
The difference between a technically perfect performance in ice-skating and a truly memorable one is charisma. With hotels it's the same. From reception to the Concierge to the bar and tea room staff everyone at the Randolph during our stay lacked the sincere smile, the warmth, the genuine friendliness of a fine five star experience. We ended up dreading contact with the staff because you're never too far from a sneering look or a curt "That's policy, Sir" type response. The extra charge of two pounds to pay by credit card was just the unwelcome icing on a forgettable experience.
“Good location”
Service was great and bedding and bath towels changed daily. I was very impressed with the room service. However, the furniture and carpeting were grossly in need of replacement. The room was too small for a 5 star award. On a positive note, it is conveniently located within walking distance of everything in the city.
“Nice but not for everyone”
The Randolph is not your typical modern hotel. It's an old building with some quirks. I knew this from attending Oxford University 20 years ago so we knew what to expect. Example: the lever to flush the toilet requires a special technique. If you just push the handle once or twice, it just makes a gurgling noise and no water comes out. You have to push the handle 5-6 times with just the right speed for the toilet to flush properly. Unfortunately this is not explained to the unsupecting guest, so you have to discover it through experimentation. Some rooms have windows facing towards the inside, so the "view" is of an unatractive airshaft. But that's not a bad thing, since you avoid all outside noise in this way. If you want a nice view from your room, you probably have to get one of the more expensive rooms. Breakfast is good but expensive. For dinner, the restaurant is ridiculously expensive so beware.
“Why not”
After a 2 hours drive from London. We finally reached Oxford for a late night check-in. As no one proposed to help, we grabbed our suitcases, took the elevator to the second floor and started our never ending journey through corridors, doors, climbing up and down stairs. Not easy with a large suitcase!! We painfully made our way in this labyrinth, crossed at least 3 buildings to end up in a room probably in a different zip code!! We felt like castaways. The next day we were woken up by an alarm. We tried to call the reception in vain, or to hear it was from another building. Duh! Are those back rooms the only available to Expedia customers?? At this price? We certainly deserve a discount!! So beware of rooms 270-ish!!
“Very Disappointing”
Very disappointing experience. Tiny room for two people; no room to open two suitcases simultaneously. Overlooking the aircondtitioning units of the adjacent building with Windows bolted shut. Outrageously overpriced. So understaffed that operator/reception desk never answered the phone. Would never stay here again.
“Great Location, Great Reputation, Not my Favorite Hotel”
This is a grand old hotel- built in 1864. I met some of the best employees - my Latvian maid- and worst - a front desk clerk named Matueas? that checked me in - that I have ever encountered in the Hotel industry. The porters were wonderful. And the location was perfect. I had a twin room and it was the tiniest that I have ever stayed in. The floor space in the room was less than that of the bathroom.
“too old and expensive”
this hotel is conveniently located in the center of Oxford. BUT, it is old, worn out, and has a strange, slow, ineffective service. Definitely not a 5 Star, rather a 2.5 Star Hotel. Most expensive Hotel around, costs are not justified. Our entire conference of 80 plus felt this way.
“Excellent Hotel, Service, Location”
Stayed here for one week trip to Oxford. One word - wow. Service was excellent, hotel rooms are spacious and clean, restaurant is awesome, and the location is in central Oxford, one block from the bus station and 2 from the train. Overall, you can't pick it any better.
