More of a motel than hotel.

Room was dated. Breakfast was ok. Pool surrounded by cinder block close to street. For the price would go somewhere else

Very pleased with overall experience!

Posted 18-Aug-2014
Pros: Spacious bathroom, cozy dining area in the room. Quick access to the beach!
The room was ready upon arrival and I was greeted with a pleasant staff. Hotel was located right on the beach and was clean and spacious. I would certainly recommend this hotel to friends and family visiting the Outer Banks.

Nice Hotel with direct beach access

Posted 15-Aug-2014
We booked for only one night, and we were surprised. Room was clean and comfortable. Some things needs a renovation, but is was as expected. Especially the stuff was really patient, after the check out, we could use the pool for a longer time. The only thing, there is no restroom for the guest (only in your room). I would book again

Your typical "older " OBX hotel on the beach!

Posted 11-Aug-2014
Pros: How close it was to the beach
Location: Plenty of bars?restaurants to walk or bike to and steps from the beach.
Stayed for 3 nights. Not a bad continental breakfast. Only steps to the beach too!

One night stay

Posted 11-Aug-2014
Pros: The courtesy and attentiveness of the staff and the beach access.
Cons: Preventive maintenance checks of the plumbing.
Location: Reasonably close to Tortuga's Lie, Lucky 12 Tavern and the Surfin' Spoon.
My wife and I only spent one night there. Our initial room was in the older of the 3 buildings. We took a nap in the late afternoon and woke up to a puddle in our bathroom floor. Apparently the tub above us was leaking on to the drop ceiling and because of the tile placement dripped out on to the floor right in front of the toilet. We discovered this around 9 and went to the front desk to ask to have the problem remedied. The gentleman at the front desk was super nice and friendly and willing to help us out. He immediately came to our room saw the problem and set us up in another room for the night, which actually turned out for the best. The new room was in the new building and had a lot more space and was much nicer. All around, the John Yancey is decent for a reasonably priced oceanfront one night stay. The staff is awesome.

Nice Hotel right on the beach!

Posted 09-Aug-2014
Pros: This hotel is right on the beach! The pool is crystal clear. There's a hose outside the pool area to get the sand off..
Cons: The breakfast could be better and the parking lot. I think they are updating their rooms little by little.
Location: Nags Head and Kitty Hawk are 10 minutes away. We went to the Wright Brothers Museum which was quite enjoyable for 4 adults and 3 teenagers.
The hotel staff were great! The phone in the room kept blinking. The phone was replaced when maintenance couldn't fix it, though he tried. Each morning I would go in the office prior to the breakfast area opening and get decaf coffee. On the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (last) morning, the gentlemen greeted me.. I got my cup and he immediately brought in the decaf. Very nice. The room does need updating, but we didn't care. We spent most of the time outdoors. The pool was clean. The beach was clean, as well. Like having our own private beach and pool most of the time. It's a big enough area that everyone had their own space-no crowding! The only things that truly needs to be better is the parking area which is very tight and breakfast which is breads, cereal, yogurt, boiled eggs, mini muffins and of course waffles. On our last day I inquired about the boiled eggs not on the bar. The lady stated that their delivery truck had not came yet so there wasn't any. There also wasn't any boxed cereals. This was on a Thursday morning. Someone needs to get better at ordering. We were in a room facing the parking lot. We thought it would be quite noisy but were happy when that wasn't the case. Only one morning, very early, the garbage truck was emptying the dumpsters and of course was noisy, but other than that-all was good. Really, though, we would definitely stay here again. Very enjoyable time.

Close to the beach

Posted 05-Aug-2014
Everything was good except the weather. We were charged xtra for xtra person. While booking thru expedia we were not charged for 3 person in a room. But check in staff charged us. It's not big amount but needs to be fixed. The toilet flush of room 129 is not working properly. Thanx

Disappointing!

Posted 03-Aug-2014
Pros: Location close to the beach; close to food and other fun things to do in Nags Head; breakfast was adequate.
Cons: Room security! Our sliding glass door didn't function correctly. The door entering into our room had enough light coming in around all 4 sides.
Location: Close to Kitty Hawk, Manteo, Jennette's Pier, putt putt golf, ice cream, decent food.
Disappointed that the sliding glass door was broken and falling apart. We were able to lock it, so that was a small plus. The door from the hallway into the room did not fit the frame and light came streaming in from all four sides. Both of these issues made us nervous. The handles on the shower faucets did not work well and the hot water was not enough to burn you if you weren't careful. For the price of the room, one would have expected better. The location was good - we walked out the door to the pathway leading to the beach, and we were close to food and other fun. The breakfast was adequate.
