Burrus House Inn

Great hotel. More like a B&B (except no breakfast) rather than a hotel. Very convenient to the beach. We really enjoyed our stay and are already making plans for next summer. Vickie (owner or manager) was very accommodating and most pleasant.

Beautiful hotel, casual service

Posted 16-Jul-2013 on Hotels.com
I understand why this place has mixed reviews. The physical hotel itself is beautiful, nice view, exotic hardwood floors, etc. But it is managed very casually. When I checked in, the manager said there had been a cancellation so she upgraded me to a better suite, and said I could stay as long as I wanted, because no one was coming after me. Great! I thought. But about 10 AM on checkout morning she called and asked when I was leaving, because now someone was coming after me and she wanted me to check out so she could clean the room. I pointed out that she had told me I could stay as long as I wanted when I checked in, and I was at that time away from the hotel so it would be about an hour before I could return and remove my things. I came back to the hotel to find the maid in there cleaning around my things, so I could no longer have the leisurely pack up and change out of the bathing suit time that I had planned. She meant well, but she really should not have changed the instruction she gave me midstream. If she were not sure I could stay as long as I wanted (and I only wanted to stay until 11:30 AM, which is not exorbitant), she should not have told me I could. A professionally run hotel would not do that. I still give them a 4, but if you want to stay at a place run like a luxury hotel, this is not for you.

It is a great place. A storm was predicted, the staff had an umbrella in the room for us, and also had flashlight in case of power outage.

Beautiful place

Posted 29-May-2013 on Hotels.com
We liked this place very much the moment we arrived. Our room had a nice view of the Roanoke Sound, with private decks. Our room was very spacious and bright with many windows, and had a separate bedroom, a kitchenette, and a huge bathroom. We liked attention to details, like furniture, decor, linens, etc. The inn is a short distance to Nags Head (where we spent most time), but sufficiently away from the craziness of a beach town. There were good restaurants not far away from this inn. One thing I want to emphasize is that this is not a hotel. It is a small inn, with only 9 or 10 rooms. I saw some reviewers complaining about the lack of basic amenities and services you find in a typical hotel, but I thought this place definitely had a character a typical hotel doesn't have. We enjoyed coming back to this place after spending a day at the beach. Although there aren't services like a concierge or 24-hour front desk, I thought the people at this inn were very friendly. They told us which restaurants are good in the area, and we enjoyed dining at those restaurants. Next time we go back to the outer banks, we may stay at this place again.

Nice weekend get-away

Posted 12-Nov-2012
Pros: Water view, private balcony, upscale amenities, very clean and welcoming.
Cons: Squeaky, loud floors above us.
Location: Near downtown area of Manteo, great water views, easy to walk to restaurants and shops.
Wonderful inn with great water view. Very nice furnishings and comfortable bed. Nice added touches such as small kitchenette, fireplace and jacuzzi tub. Easy walk to restaurants and shops. Only complaint was noisy neighbors above who started their days at 4:30 am. Squeaky wood floors above - you could literally hear every step- not especially welcome on Sat and Sun mornings!

Mediocre- Missing some key items

Posted 11-Jun-2012
Pros: Setting, views, beautiful rooms
Cons: Service not good. Management did not take any accountability for errors on vacation reseller listing. No closet, no breakfast, no iron, no phone!
Location: Manteo is a tiny town in a beautiful place. Go there to really relax and leave stress behind.
First, let me say that this property is beautiful The rooms are spacious and lovely, and the setting is amazing. That said, there are some problems. The representation of the property and what is offered according to the vacation resellers like Expedia is not accurate. The managementy of Burrus House took no responsibility for the fact that certain amenities and benefits were listed on the site and were not actually offered (e.g. they do not offer breakfast, despite being a bed and BREAKFAST!). It was very difficulty to find an employee. We went the whole stay without understanding how to connect to wireless, or if that was even available or another error in the property listing. Additionally, neither room (our party had two rooms) had an ironing board or iron in it. Further, my lovely room did not have a closet. I had a stand-style coat rack to hang my items from!! Towels were threadbare, and bed linens were poor quality. Planking on decking is getting to the end of its life, and handrails on stairs are not particularly secure or comfortable to hang onto. These were items that would not be deal-breakers for me, but they were real opportunities to take the property to where it should be. One item that guests should know is that at least our rooms did not have telephones. If someone had an accident or incident, this could be a real problem. In the net, I would stay there again, but it seems a shame that I would be rating such a lovely place a 3.

great place!

This hotel is on the pricey side, but the views are breathtaking, the rooms are spacious, well decorated and thoughtfully appointed. The hotel staff is friendly and accommodating, though more basic information about the hotel (i.e., how to use the wifi, checkout times, etc) in written form in the rooms would have been nice.
