Stayed in a twin room (25 sqm) for 2 nights on Aug 5 - 7. The size is comfortable for 2 person with big luggages. The room comes with a standard bathroom and a extra basin and mirror outside which is a bonus. Our room is at the corner facing the mountain, the sea and part of the canal. It would be beautiful if it is winter.
The exterior of the building and the lobby has an 'European Style' feel, so it is different from other hotels that we had stayed before. The gift shop in the lobby is a bit small.
Access to the hotel is easy as the road is perpendicular to the entrance of Otaru Station and heading down slope to the canal. Because it is our last stop and we have a few luggages, we took a cab instead.
The staff helped us with our luggages from the cab, but it was strange that they didn't want to help us to bring the luggages to the lift or room when my wife requested it. I didn't demand further but thinking it could be the language barrier.
Although Otaru is a small town and this is our 2nd time visiting Otaru in the same year (we stayed only 1 night at another hotel during Snow festival), we came back because of the nice food and ambience. Beside the beautiful canal, Sakamachi Street offers a good place for eating and buying souvenirs. We chose this hotel this time because it is opposite the canal and 10 mins walk to Sakaimachi Street.
Fantastic hotel for an independent traveller. Right across from the train station and easy walking distance to everything in town. Lovely onsen facilities, free fast wi-fi in the rooms, free laundry facilities and a complimentary bowl of ramen each night. My only qualm is the bed being a touch firm with only one small pillow.
Great fun with family near the surrounding. Quiet n peaceful. Very quiet town unlike Sapporo. Shops closed early n u need to catch early dinner. Information center in Otaru which I had specific encountered a English speaking japanese staff in late 50s or 60s whom very helpful n great n advise us where to go .................hotel breakfast very simple n rigid. Closed right on time n asked for 2nd refill was turned down. Heavy luggage an issue as u need to carry up by a few steps. FNB in the hotel is very quiet
It is one of the most expensive hotels that I stay when visiting Hokkaido because it is the snow festival period. I've paid $105/night when travelling alone. The hotel is not close to Otaru JR station but it is in the perfect location beside Otaru canal. If you are visiting Otaru for their snow light festival, it is perfect. Make sure to book early and ask for a room with canal sight. It comes with a Japanese breakfast buffet with I considered with some Chinese touches. And don't forget to visit the old building because there are old & new building for Sonia hotel.
"Conveniently close to trains, buses and the canal."
We booked 2 different rooms; one a twin and the other a double room. The double room is much smaller than the twin room. Our stay were comfortable, the rooms were clean and nice. For those who enjoy room service, it stops at 8pm.
Otaru is located in the western part of Hokkaido, facing Ishikari Bay. Known as the town of hills, Otaru was developed to serve as a port for Hokkaido. Stone and brick warehouses along the canal, used for storage in days when barges crowded the waters, have been converted into glasswork shops, cafes, restaurants, and shops. After sunset, the oil lamps on the area's cobbled streets are lit.
