“very average budget hotel”
Pro: Very central, clean room, decent breakfast Con: try to call reception on arrival for several minutes but no one picked up. I also asked for a late check out on Sunday for 1pm instead of 12pm and was asked 100Kr for it!
“Great central location, functional room, hearty breakfast”
Overall I was really pleased with the Thon (Astoria) hotel. I turned up at this hotel and noticed the sign said "Budget" - immediately I was starting to get worried. However, after staying 2 nights on a business trip I was really pleased with the hotel. It was 'relatively' cheap for Oslo so there's certain things you don't expect but in terms of location, functional en-suite room (on the small side, hence the price) and a 'free' breakfast I thought it was perfect for my needs. The staff were very pleasant and there's a free tea/coffee machine in the lobby. One downside was the noise. I was on the 6th floor and could hear noise from the street level, but it is a city hotel so don't be surprised. I always travel with ear-plugs and didn't hear a thing once they were in!
“Very Convenient”
I was in Oslo for a business trip in Septmeber and stayed here. I found the location idea - 5 mins walk to central Station, the hotel was very clean, comfortable and provided a great hot breakfast selection. The staff were really helpful and I could even check in at 830 in the morning. Would highly reccomend it.
“Suprised after reading reviews”
Booked this hotel in a rush before reading the reviews. Got a little worried when I glanced at them the day before my trip. Arrived Thurs 18th, stopped by at 11am to drop my bag off and was surprised my room ready and I didn't have to wait until 3pm to check in. Room 605, sixth floor, right above the entrance to the hotel facing the street. Room was clean, great window coverings (made jet-lagged sleeping much easier), and very minimal (small bathroom). Didn't spend more than 30 minutes at a time of being awake in the room (not including naps/sleeping), so it had everything I needed. I heard the nightclub at night and general street noise during the day that other reviews wrote about, but with the windows closed it wasn't a bother. Breakfast is basic daily starters, on par with most continental breakfasts I've seen in the states. Location was VERY convenient to almost everything. This was the best part of the hotel. Downsides... my first night I was approached by several prostitutes on the way back hotel, but I blame myself for walking through downtown alone at 3am. Then the broken elevator (other reviews claimed this too) that was down Fri-Sunday. There was a backup elevator, but took much longer and many times people could push the button to skip your floor (I know you saw me! lol). Would recommend it if you plan on being out most of the trip. It's not the Hilton, but worked great for exploring the city. For the money, you can't beat it.
“Good value, centrally located hotel”
Oslo is an expensive city so it was great to find a central hotel hotel for such a great price only 5 mins walk from the bus/train station. Rooms were a little on the small side, but they were clean and modern. the bathroom (wetroom) with walk in shower was really good. would definitely recommend this place.
“Excellent deal”
The room was extremely small and we got two seperate single beds instead of one double but I didn't mind because of the incredible value. Norway is insanely expensive but this hotel was a bargain by any standards. The room was very clean and comfortable and the breakfast buffet was outstanding, especially considering how expensive food is in Norway. To have breakfast included every morning was a huge relief to my shrinking wallet. I highly recommend this hotel.
“useful good value city centre option”
This is a budget hotel - it offers the minimum at a good price. It is extremely conveniently located - 3 minutes walk from the Central station and 2 minutes from a tram stop. My room was very small, but the bathroom was good, the TV was good, the bed was comfortable and all the basic requirements were fine. There is no air con so I opened the window. It was noisy (it was Saturday night on the main drag) but I was well prepared with ear plugs (a vital necessity when travelling - your own fault if you don't think to take them). The breakfast - once you find it, through amaze of corridors!) was excellent. I'd happily go there again for a short stop. It's not the place for a longer / relaxing family or romantic stay.
“Great for short stay”
Very good location, near railway station. Single room was rather small and the bathroom was very tiny.I'm sure the double rooms are more spacious. The breakfast room was very nice and the food selecton offered was good.
“Convenient and good breakfast - Awful Room”
This is part of the big Thon hotel chain in Norway and is in their "budget" designation. It's a very central location just off the main shopping street and a few minutes on foot from the central train and bus stations. The lobby is very small, with one stand up computer--you pay for wi-fi access. The room was spartan and grimy, with old furniture. It looked like the hotel had been a cheap flophouse that had been recently converted. I stayed in another Thon budget hotel in Bergen and it was great.
“Worst Hotel Stay...EVER!!”
My brief stay at the Thon Hotel Astoria was the worst hotel experience ever!!!!! I am a regular traveler to all of Europe, which includeds stays in many ex-Soviet republics. I was shocked by this place. Reason for picking this hotel was proximity to the central railroad station as my business meeting was also nearby. This "three star" hotel actually is a "budget hotel"....says so on the main door! If I knew this to begin with, I would never have book a room there. Anyway, I ordered 2 beds, but got very small one. Staff recommended sleeping on a room couch if I wasn't satisfied with the single bed. When I booked the hotel, renovation wasn't mentioned, and to my surprise, construction started at 6:55 AM!!! Staff didn't care. I complained enough to the day manager and was finally "upgraded" to a newly renovated room. Room was on the second floor....and over a club that started music at 11:15 PM. Music didn't stop until 3:00 AM. From 3-4:00 AM, there were several arguments out in the street. We checked out early and found another hotel. Stay away from this one.
