“Not perfect, but not bad”

This is indeed a grand hotel, in style and price. Unfortunately the first room they put us in was not up to par (not clean, view of hotel dumpsters, broken fixtures, and so on) and they could not move us until the second day of a seven night stay. The second room was much better, slightly more spacious, clean, and everything worked as it should. The hotel was undergoing renovation and perhaps the first room was one that had not yet been renovated. Nevertheless, it was not in a condition befitting the quality of the hotel, or the price. Service otherwise was good. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The location can't be beat, it's truly in the heart of Oslo. All things considered I'd stay there again.

Area recommendations
The entire city center is a treat, with people out and about, but the hotel is closest to the shopping district (Karl Johans Gate), National Theater, Parliament, and castle, all of which are worth seeing. I also highly recommend taking the ferry (in season, bus otherwise) for a short ride (about 20-30 minutes) to the national folk museum, they have a great display of various buildings from Norway's history, and it's a short walk from there to the Viking Ship Museum, and a 15 minute walk from there to the maritime museum and Kon Tiki museum. Those are highlights not to be missed, in my opinion.

“An old master in a great location”

Lovely old hotel where Ibsen dined. Located in the heart of things in Oslo and easy walking distance to just about everything. We had a standard room which wasn't luxurious but reasonable in this expensive city and it was nice to be surrounded by the heart of Oslo and the history. Great breakfast!

Area recommendations
Aker Brygge - but mostly the amazing development beyond it. Stunning buildings. Vigelund Park and sculptures on a fine day, Art Gallery in city a gem, with Munchs and much more...

“older hotel which could use some attention to details”

This is a nice older hotel that could use some updating and attention to details with respect to cleanliness and maintenance. Also the help could have been a little friendlier.

Area recommendations
This Hotel is located in the centre city area near the train station. Convenient location.

“Noisy Weekends”

I was in the hotel on a conference trip for 6 nights. The weekends are extremely noisy, very difficult to work next day. The hotel needs to work on better noise reduction externally and internally. The Spa was very good. Given Oslo prices it is a decent value.

Area recommendations
This is a good area, for a night stroll after dinner.

“Not Impressed”

What I was most disappointed is the service quality of waitresses of the restaurant (Grand Cafe). They were not polite, not friendly and not kind.

Area recommendations
Waterfront near city hall is really beautiful.

“Grand DameGem in the Heart of Oslo”

Open since 1876. Great location. Tip-top shape. Excellent restaurants. Take the Flybus or train from the airport. The SAS Flybus stops one block behind the hotel.

Area recommendations
Downtown and the Vigeland Sculpture park. The outdoor folk museum gives a good view of Viking Norway. Many museums are grouped together in Bygot. Very convenient. Recommend the full day grand circle tour of Oslo.

“The hotel in Oslo”

Excellent hotel in the best possible location in Oslo; can be a little expensive; would have preferred a rate without breakfast

“Grand lady, with a touch of class”

The hotel is well located. It is about ten minutes walk from the railway station; five minutes walk from the City Hall, wharves for ferries, and the historic fortress/palace; and two minutes walk from tram and Metro stops. It is located on the city's main pedestrian-only street which is great for people watching, and has many cafes and restaurants. Further, the hotel in located opposite a large park with a large open air pub/cafe, At weekends markets are assembled next to the park. The hotel is adjacent to Parliament house, and only a few hundred metres from the Royal Palace at the end of the street (the palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens which are accesible to the public). Our room was very large, but with no view. The hotel needs some renovations. For example, guests need to use several steps to access the main lifts, and many have to use more steps to access rooms. Breakfast was excellent, with five star service, and reception staff were very helpful. The hotel was not too expensive for budget travellers looking to have a fling in a classy hotel (my wife certainly enjoyed the ambiance, and I enjoyed the pool). However, for those watching their budget I would recommend the Rica Victoria, from the same stable, which is located close by.

Area recommendations
Visit the fortress/palace (Akershus) for an insight into the history of Oslo. Take a suburban train(Line 1) to a lookout several hundred metres above the city and fjord. Restaurants and cafes are at the lookout. Take a ferry to the Kontiki and Maritime museums. Spend time in Karl Johannes Gaten, the main pedestrian-only street, just people watching. Mamma ? Restaurant provides excellent Italian meals with a first floor view overlooking the street.
Other
At the main railway station, directions to the tourist office are poor. The office is outside the new main entrance, and down a long flight of stairs or a long winding ramp. It is below a 'modern' square tower. A ramp is provided for the metro, but it starts from the other side of the tramline. A transport card, especially a 7-day one, is good value.

“Very satisfied”

We had a very good rate with Expedia for a superior room. Our room was outstanding, high ceiling with very large sitting area. We travelled with our 13yo teen, and they added foldable bed. No view which added to privacy and tranquility. The Grand Cafe is a great place with historical mentions where a great breakfast is served. Highly recommend it.
