“A Vacation Nightmare”

upon check-in the front desk staff was very courteous, when we arrived to our room it was not the best but you get what you pay for. we left for the day and when we returned ready to take a shower and go to bed we discovered the sheets were dirty with stains on them, the mattress was torn, the refridgerator was not working and there was no hot water. when we complained that evening the housekeeping supervisor came to the room and handed us clean sheets and we were told there was nothing they could do about the hot water that evening, also a drunk maintenance man came to assist with the refridgerator which was not plugged in. the next day we left early in the morning and were gone all day only to come back 12 hours later to find there had been no housekeeping and still no hot water. the staff stated we had the only key to the room, and we were told we could get a temporary room for the night and they would give us another room for the remainder of our trip the next day. the next room was worse, there were two twin beds pushed together as one king which had different heights, the air conditioner made a very loud noise and there was a whole tile missing where you could see the outside, the phone did not work and still no hot water. we went back to the original room and the next morning we checked out. I would not recommend this hotel to a dog as the staff is not accomodating and this place looks nothing like the advertisements.

Comment from the hotel's management
We here at Sandcastles Resort are deeply sorry for the inconveniences the guest mentioned that they had encountered while staying with us. The last thing that we recommend is for any guest to feel dissatisfied. If at anytime our guest is dissatisfied with a room we always try to upgrade or room change them to a better one.We do not allow our staff members to drink alcoholic beverages while on the job, if this is noticed by any of our guest we "beg" for this report immediately.. The Sandcastles family looks forward to hosting you and your family in the near future.

“Better than expected”

The number of beds & room size were exactly what I wanted. Very courteous staff and very helpful. The bell hop on call at time of check in was tops in the business. I didn't take time to cash out a few dollars, & when i got to the hotel, he walked with me on the street to change out a few dollars. That was beyond his job description. The only issue was morning of check out. The night before, I asked for a wake up call at 5:00am & at 6:00am, the front desk rung my room & said that my driver was downstairs. I asked what time it was & he(same guy i asked for wake up call), told me that it was 6:00am. The driver had another stop to make which worked out because he(driver) had a few extra minutes to spare. Overall I was pleased & would definely go back.

What to pack
The usual summer clothes, shorts, tees, rain gear, sneakers, flip flops, etc. You might need to change 2/3 times in one day. Sun block lotion. The sun block lotions sold were more on the greasy side. Insect repellant, hat, etc

“A nice hotel past it's prime”

The cost of staying there was a plus but maybe that's why our shower stall and face basin kept blocking up. The restaurant crew is good a one or two of the front desk folks didn't give the impression they were interested in being helpful. The maintenance and security staff were professional Our A/C unit was LOUD and made some terrifying sounds at start up!

Area recommendations
Restaurants in the town. Good eats!

“Not impressed!”

This hotel left something to be desired. We arrived and their hotel reservation person had gone home: we arrived at 6:30 pm. They were extremely rude to us at the reception and treated us with disrespect on many levels. The rooms are okay, nothing special. The next day, we were told by reception that breakfast was included and they told us in the restaurant we could have anything we wanted from the menu. We ordered and ate, and then were presented with a huge bill because apparently, breakfast was not included. They were very unorganized and the whole thing felt a little slimey.

“Great for travellers who love to scope the town and cook their own food!!!”

The beach was behind the hotel, nice, relaxing views. Many things to do in Ocho Rios and to see. I recommend going to Turtle River Park right across the hotel.

“A Sandcaslte would be better”

When you look at the pictures everything seems nice, but upon arrival it was not quite so. Pretty much everything in this hotel needs to be repainted, walking towards the room you could see chunks of paint missing everywhere, on the walls, staircase railing, even the room. The bathrooms was small, the door would not close properly, the room had evidence of multiple leaks with brown spots everywhere. Mold was spotted next to the toilet. The toilet seat was broken, I'm 5'8 and the shower head reached my neck, i had to duck to wash my hair. The 2nd bed was upstairs and you had to walk up a set of narrow stairs the size of a ladder and when you reached the top you couldn't stand up or else you would bang your head. The decor was very bland, everything looked very old, and the bed was hard like concrete, so bad that my friend slept on the carpet upstairs instead of his bed. You need a deposit for everything. They wanted US $10 for a remote for the TV (which was the size of a computer screen), same for a 2nd key for my friend, even beach towels you had to pay a deposit. The location was both perfect and bad...It was perfect because it is located in the center of Ocho Rios, everywhere is a 5 minute walk, shopping, good restaurants. But it was also right in front of a Bar which was playing music till past 3am and was disturbing me while I was sleeping. I could feel the bass vibration in my bed.

Shopping
Soni's Plaza was a great spot to shop. They had everything we needed from rum, cigars, t-shirts to jewelry, and people did not harass you. Craft market is a great place to shop but expect to get annoyed by every person is there, and they won't stop begging you to look at their store. The great thing about this place is that you can negotiate easily.
Dining
If you want good food make sure to go to Passage to India in Soni's Plaza which has some of the best Indian food I have ever tasted and is in a nice rooftop setting in a chic ambiance. Theres also Coconuts On The Bay which is located in Fisherman's point, right by the cruise ship peer. They has a nice bar with pleasant staff and is a great place to try local Jamaican food such as oxtail, curry goat, jerk chicken, and international cuisine like pastas, quesadillas, sandwiches, and a very nice breakfast menu.
Family-friendly activities
Dunn's River is always a favorite Dolphin Cove was a great experience, lot's to see, and I got to swim with dolphins! Mystic Mountain is very nice, I didn't go with kids but trust me yours would love it.
Nightlife
If you just want a drink I recommend Loafer's Den in Island Village, they had a special where you got 2 bottles of 250ml rum for about US $7. Margaritaville is a good place to to go out at night but don't go there during the day, the prices are outrageous and the food was terrible. A beer was over US $5, blasphemy!
Outdoors or beach
The beach at Sandcaslte was terrible, full of algae and I heard locals who said it was dirty because of the cruise ships. If you would like to go to a nice beach try Mamee Bay beach which is a 10 minute drive from the hotel.
