    “Ohana Waikiki West -Satisfaction”

Hotel staff are great and will do their best to accommodate, however, they will try and give the poorest rooms to Expedia (and other discount) guests. We had to demand a change of rooms, the first one was old, decrepit and tiny. My wife is physically disabled and we found they do have rooms adequate for wheelchairs. Our advice would be to call the hotel directly about a month in advance and tell them your needs. The rooms designed for the disabled are called "ADA" rooms and are much more accessible and more safely equipped . The Central Waikiki location is fantastic (for the price) and the services/amenities cannot be matched by neighboring hotels. Hotel food services were not to our taste but there is no shortage of restaurants and fast food nearby. Both Chili's and the pool bar (Cabanas) have excellent staff. The "Food Pantry" groceteria across the street has everything to meet one's needs. Onsite (contracted) parking is adequate and, while not cheap, is priced competitive with the area. Guest laundry services are clean and well maintained. Bell Service and Hospitality Rooms are cheerfully provided for late departures. Truly, a blessing. Would we stay at this hotel again? In a heartbeat, but we would make our needs known to the Hotel in advance.

    Area recommendations
Travelers will find this hotel very conveniently located in the heart of Waikiki. Waikiki is home to some of the world's best beaches and there is no shortage of shopping/eating opportunity. Most everything is within walking distance. "First Timers" would be well advised to visit The Polynesian Cultural Center on The North Shore (tours are readily available) where they will learn all about the Polynesian history and way of life. The West and North Shores are also the sites for fantastic surf and surfing. Sea Life park on the leeward coast is also very interesting and the drive is very picturesque with lots of 'lookouts'. Pearl Harbor is definitely a learning experience not to be overlooked.
    Dining
We enjoyed the best steak EVER at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in Waikiki and excellent Italian at Assagio's located in the Ala Moana Shopping Center. If you rent a car and drive to Haleawa on the West shore, be sure to stop at "Jameson's on the Beach " for terrific seafood and sea views.
    Events and shows
North Shore "Pipeline" Surfing Competitions (International) take place within the first ten days of December. That is when the Trade Winds bring the highest surf. This year the waves were up to 23 feet. Even if (like me) you do not surf; the sights are spectacular.

    “Not amazing but not horrible.”

It was ok for the money, but the smell of cleanser was so bad we had to leave the door open for days. The bathroom is very small and our view was looking straight into neighboring windows. There were only about 7 tv channels but we spent our time outside so it didn't really matter.

“Not impressed. The hotel is so big with lots of floors and rooms that we felt like just a "number".”

We had split our stay between Waikiki and the North Shore. We were in Hawaii for 16 nights. We had stayed at another nearby hotel for the first 6 nights and were very impressed with the service, the Aloha Spirit, cleanliness, location and friendliness at the Aqua Pearl Hotel. The staff at the Aqua Pearll went out of their way to help us with directions or just to converse with. We left Waikiki and spent 5 nights on the North Shore area and returned to Waikiki and stayed at the Ohana West and regretted it, right from check in. The check in staff were not very friendly and did not have the Aloha spirit that we had enjoyed for the first 11 days in Hawaii and in fact were quite rude. We had booked to stay in the Ohana West for 5 nights and after the first night, we were woken up at 8:30am by housekeeping knocking at our door to see when we were going to be checking out and again at 9:30am. Naturally, we were very annoyed as we were still in bed at 8:30am and had another 4 nights to go before checking out. I would not recommend this property to anyone who wants the Aloha spirit, service, quality, cleanliness or a good nights sleep because you won't get it at this hotel. There is a noisy bar downstairs and a night club across the road from this hotel. We were treated just like a number and bums on beds. Sad really..... We will not be staying at this hotel again and would be reluctant to stay at another Outrigger Chain. We prefer the Aqua Hotels, thank you very much.

    Area recommendations
The North Shore have beautiful beaches and particularly the Sunset Beach area. The drive from Waikiki to the Dole Plantation along the west is lovely with the views of the coast line between Likelike Highway, Laie and the Sunset Beach area. The Dole Plantation is worth taking a look and has an interesting history. Sweet Pineapples can be purchased from the Dole Store. Laie has the Polynesian Cultural Centre which has an excellent show, Ha - the Breath of Life and good food at the Ambassor and Gateway Restaurant. The Villages in the Polynesian Cultural Centre was also worth while visiting and watching the shows there. Great value and excellent attraction to Hawaii. We will be visiting again in 2012.
    When to go
We travelled in middle of November prior to Thanksgiving. The fares from New Zealand were very good and we managed to get a discount of 30 percent on normal fares (approx NZ$500.00 per person) by booking and paying online. There was a window of two weeks where the discount was offered online. We got to see first hand the "craze" of Thanksgiving sales. Very interesting and fun and the prices were awesome too. Laptops for USD$200, Blue Ray players for USD$50.00.
    Getting around
We rented vehicles from Alamo and picked it from the airport. Excellent service at the Alamo Car rental and very helpful, friendly people. We enjoyed being independent and having our own transport. The road in Hawaii are in good condition, and easy to get in and out of the busy Waikiki area. The parking fee of $20.00 per night is a bit high but then, we used the car every day and drove everywhere and saw more than most people who would have just used the public transport. We felt that the parking fee was a small price to pay for having independence and our own transport to go when ever and where ever. It was a bit of a challenge with having to drive on the right hand side though but we got used to it quickly. We found the drivers on the roads in Oahu are very courteous and not aggressive like back home in New Zealand. It was really enjoyable driving in a friendly environment and with average speed limits of 35 miles per hour (60 km).
    Must see
Polynesian Cultural Centre. Excellent show, the place is also full of the Aloha Spirit and very inspiring and very friendly. The show was very professional, live and with musicians performing live as well.

    “The Friendly Place To Stay.”

I really enjoyed my stay but as always there was some things that made our holiday not as good as it should have been. The one thing that was the hardest to put up with was the outside noise. The rooms were in no way sound proof and because of the central location we endured traffic noise continuously. Not only cars and buses but police, fire and ambulance sirens were extremely regular during the night. It is such a shame because when you are trying to squeeze a lot of things into every day, you really need to have a good sleep. I resorted to wearing ear plugs but that is not an ideal way of sleeping. Please accept my criticism as constructive as I would also like to compliment the staff as they were extremely friendly and helpful. I would definately stay there again.

    “Location - Rooms need updating”

Stayed at the Ohana Waikiki West for 6 nights. This is our 2nd stay as we've previously stayed there. Location is great, right next to a grocery store. Some rooms have kitchenettes (on request). Free trolley bus to Ala Moana is great (otherwise it's $2/person per trip). It's a budget hotel, you get what you pay for. I only choose to stay there for convenience and price. Will try a different hotel upon our next stay in Waikiki.

    “good hotel for the price”

like all hotels in honolulu, this one needs an upgrade. it is still clean and the staff are extremely helpful. the location is the best, not too far from the beach and all the stores, and being close to the supermarket was good too. the only problem is the street noise around about 4am in the morning. this woke us up a couple of times during the ten nights we were there. apart from that being our only complaint I feel that the hotel is well worth the money and would consider staying there again.

    Comment from the hotel's management
On behalf of the staff and management of the OHAHA Waikiki West, we are very appreciative of your comments as well as your score for our hotel! We do strive to provide the cleanest rooms for our guests and advise our staff to share true "Aloha Spirit" with our guests. We are happy to know we were able to accomplish both with you. We do apologize about the loud street noise and our décor being outdated. The management is aware of both and is discussing potential resolutions that will upgrade our facilities, while still providing a competitive budget price. Renovation is being discussed however is still a couple years out. We are grateful you chose to stay at the OHANA Waikiki West Hotel and look forward to you returning again!
