The hotel used to be a boarding school for the blind and deaf. The location is quiet and only 10 mins drive from the centre of Hobart. Very spacious rooms, ready for renovation soon but very comfortable.
Check-in and check-out were easy and smooth. Room #3 is really warm, as it is right above the reception lounge where the black metal chimney from lounge's fireplace goes through the room and up the roof, making the room always warm during the day until 8pm when reception is close. Electric blanket makes sleeping time nice and cosy. It was advertised as small room, but it is spacious enough for a couple. And I had Mt Wellington view!
I saw a lot of complaints about insufficient parking space but I didn't have any problem. The parking at the front of the lodge was filled up at night but there were more down below. People complaint about having to park in the vacant lot but there is also street parking just out front (I didn't look for restriction though as I didn't need to, best to ask the staff before you park on street). Comfy bed. Basic amenities were provided; tea, coffee, sugar, kettle, and toiletries. Simple breakfast available for next morning, if you order before 7pm, for those too lazy to stock up.
Overall, a very nice little lodge with sufficient amenities. Helpful and friendly staff without being too friendly, which I like. And if you're lucky you might get to pat the little fluffy friendly kitty that roams around the car park.
If you like quiet place to sleep and you have a car you'll enjoy your stay here. Google/Urbanspoon helps you find places to eat in any area. You should try Myu Easy Bites, good value Malaysian restaurant just 10 mins drive from the lodge.
I stayed at this motel a few year's back and was happy then, just as happy now. Place was comfortable, staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was plentiful. Was a decent place to lay my head after a busy day of sightseeing. Interior of room's could do with a update but overall it was decent.
Staying in the Convicts Cottage was just perfect. For my wife and myself it made for a perfect short getaway!
The hosts Jeff and Julie could not have done anything more to make us feel more welcome. Their knowledge of the area and the restaurants was super helpful.
The gardens are impeccable. The personal touches made all the difference. Will definitely return in the near future.
"A good value motel with beautiful garden setting."
We stayed two nights in Hobart and chose this motel primarily because of its relatively low price. The motel is not too far away from the city centre and other places of interest and is close to many restaurants along Elizabeth Street. The motel is a bit old but has a very beautiful garden setting with beautiful flowers and birds around. We stayed in the studio room which is very quiet and roomy. We really enjoyed our stay in this motel.
"Hobart Apartments..........good for a budget holiday!!"
The apartment was far larger than we expected being a complete two bedroom apartment with plenty of room. They were older apartments but were clean. The only shortfall was there were very little cooking utensils available, as in not many saucepans etc. Other than that it was neat, tidy and comfortable.
We needed a cheap hotel that was functional. The Carlyle served that purpose for us. It was clean and comfortable which was all we wanted really. We spent so much time sightseeing that the hotel room didn't need any fancy extras. It would have been better if the sink was located in the bathroom, the bed was an actual double and not two singles pushed together and if the tv had a dvd player in it, but really those are small sacrifices to make for an iinexpensive stay.
The dozens of restaurants, cafes, and pubs that line Elizabeth Street are the main attraction in this suburb just north of Hobart. After sampling the international flavors, visitors can catch an indie film at the State Cinema, which has been operating as a movie-house since 1913. In the southern hemisphere's winter, fans of Australian-rules football can attend a match at the North Hobart Oval.
