The hotel ratings, reviews and pictures just not describe our experience. We travel a lot and stay from high end hotels to mom-n-pop B&Bs. However, this was the worst hotel ever. We stayed one night of our multiple night stay as it was too nasty to remain there. The staff was happy to cancel the remaining reservation without a refund. We left anyway.
The hotel looks abandoned and has a haunted/spooky feel. It is very old, dreary, and depressing. The stairways are dark; the hallway is dark until you can find the light in the hallway (not automatic); bathroom is so old-rusty metal parts in the tub and lots of mold on the shower curtain; tissue dispenser kept falling off; one bed-side lamp didn't work; dusty all over; paint/wallpaper peeling all over the walls. We could hear other guests (showers, toilets, and other sounds) in the room. The heat worked in the bath, but not in the bedroom.
We chose it for a spa hotel and having an on-site restaurant. We tried to have dinner but was told there wasn't much food to be served and better to go into town. The 15 min walk down hill into town is not bad, but the path is dark w/lots of bushes and doesn't feel safe. The walk back up the hill is no fun. Spa--what spa? Breakfast was bad, too (along with the usual cold breakfast items, there were cold scrambled eggs and sausages)--there were 4 bullet casings outside the breakfast room window.
Overall, a bad place to stay.
On first appearances this hotel might disappoint as it is right next to a tram stop on a busy junction and the pavement is being repaired outside. However, the quality of the hotel far exceeds this first impression. The interior is not lavish but it is very clean and comfortable. The staff are incredibly helpful and welcoming.
We booked a superior room as we were travelling with a baby and were surprised and delighted to see the cot in the room with cute duvet and complementary baby toiletries. We also had complimentary drinks in the mini bar (mostly soft drinks) free WiFi and complementary breakfast buffet which was fantastic quality.
The car parking is right beneath the hotel with an elevator so access is easy.
All in all a very good value for money hotel, very central, no noise, comfortable, warm, clean, excellent staff. I could not find any faults even if I wanted to!
Having the underground car parking and being located right in the town is worth staying here in itself. However, the staff are wonderful, polite and very pleasant making for a relaxed atmosphere. The breakfast is terrific with cooked eggs and bacon to order.
Baden Baden is superb anyway, almost faultless.

I have stayed at the Dorint Baden Baden in December 2013 to celebrate Christmas with my family.
We had booked 3 rooms. The hotel location is perfect, just across the street from the Christmas Market.
All the hotel staff were very helpful and attentive, especially Mr. Martin who even provided us with a Santa Claus to give away presents for my kids and nephews.
The casino is connected to the hotel by an underground passage.
The spa is quiet relaxing and diverse.
Overall experience was excellent ... I would gladly say we had a 'magical' Christmas at the Dorint!
Our family (2 adults, 2 kids) stayed at Watthalden for 10 days and could not have asked for more. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic, lots of local products (fresh baked goods, jams, and honey) large selection of fruit, smoothies, cold cuts, eggs any style, and coffee drinks and tea a la carte without extra charge.
I have yet to find a more accomodating and friendly staff in any hotel. Everyone was very friendly and seemed to actually like their job. Great tips on what to do.
For dinner, we used Watts bistro next door. Their food is absolutely the antithesis to stereotypical German food - refined, original, and each dish with a distinct flavor. The wine and beer selection is also real good and found it convenient not to have to drive.
Locationwise, close to old downtown Ettlingen, and within 15 min drive to downtown Karlsruhe. Perfect place to stay and explore the Blackforest and surrounding cities. We stayed on our previous trips there already, and will be back agin for our next stay.
For best rates, try contacting the hotel directly. Everyone speaks English at the front desk.
