“very friendly”
We only stayed the one night while visiting or son at uni and spent the evening in York so missed out on what smelled like a good evening meal. The rooms are not modern but very well presented. The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly and breakfast was excellent.
“Hotel staff excellent - most welcoming and fun team”
Not our usual choice of hotel and we were concerned when we approached the hotel - front entrance tired and general decor of common area tired - however this was quickly overcome by the friendliness and helpfulness of the hotel team. Cleanliness high despite tireness of hotel so felt comfortable. Hotel staff looked after the little things which added to the stay and inclusive breakfast deal was as good as you would get anywhere.
“OK as a cheap place to stay near York”
The Steer Inn is a simple roadside Inn, somewhat difficult to find in the dark being in a cul-de-sac off the main road. Proprietress friendly and welcoming at the bar. Our twin room was small but adequate, with a shower and wc. Poor room planning included placing the small tv on a board above a bed-head - risky if one sat up at night! Decor could do with a face-lift and there was a crack in the handbasin. Breakfasts were good and plentiful though service could start later than advertised. Every effort was made to accommodate my friend's requirements at breakfast, including adding scrambled egg to the buffet items on request.
“Steer well clear”
I was going to book a travelodge in york but this was the same price and the write up sounding like it would be a charming little b&b so I went with it. This was a trip away for my wifes birthday, and on pulling in the hotel looks nice until you realise that you are not staying in the lovely house you are staying in the pub stuck on the side of it. The landlord was very friendly and a nice chap but the room was smaller than my wardrobe, you had to be an escape artist of houdini standard to use the bathroom without banging yourself on the walls and fittings, the decor reminded me of an old people's home and you have to walk through the bar with all your cases to get to your room and everyone stares at you (reminiscent of the American Werewolf in London) The room is so small that you cant view the television properly without the colours looking in negative, that's when the television works. The breakfast was ok, a full English affair with one woman desperately trying to keep the trolley topped up lucky for us we got there at the right time and got a hot breakfast but everyone after us got whatever happened to be on the trolley at that time on cold toast. I didn't use the shower in the bathroom as it was tiny and didn't seem that clean but everyone at breakfast was saying that they couldn't get hot water. So all in all I really should have booked the travelodge. If it wasn't for the fact that my wife thought it was hillariously bad I think it would have ruined her birthday.
“Very poor, not at all recommended”
- It was cheap and we got what we paid for - Was kept awake by noise from bar below (was willing to tolerate this and it finished at a reasonable time) and snoring from room next door (completely unacceptable) - No hot water for shower - Hot tap on sink was constantly dripping/running and would not turn off - Extractor fan did not work in bathroom - Dreadful service and attitude at breakfast, although food was reasonable

Area:
York, England, United Kingdom: Once enclosed by ancient fortified walls, York offers a wealth of cultural and historical sites, including York Castle, the National Railway Museum, and York Minster, a Gothic cathedral in the city center. The Shambles is a pedestrian-friendly street dating back to mediaeval ages, where it housed butcher shops. Today the scene is less gruesome, with quaint boutiques and tea rooms lining the road.
