“Perfect Location!”

There has been mixed reviews about this hotel, but my partner and I couldn't find any fault with it. The location was perfect for us, with a 5-10 minute walk into town it couldnt have been positioned better. All the staff were very polite and helpful, the room was cleaned thoroughly daily and always fresh towels. I would definately stay there again and would recommend anyone to give it a go.

“one night stay in york”

Excellent location right next to the main train station and a short walk to the city centre,The rroom was rather disappointingly in the basement with no view to speak of but was excellently appointed and we slept really well even though there was a school reunion event taking place down the corridor. The breakfast was very good and the staff were plentiful and obliging. We would use this hotel again if the occasion arises.

“Lovely hotel but very noisey”

I have stayed in this hotel twice now and both times my sleep was constantly being interrupted by outside noise. The hotel is genuinely nice but it is located directly beside the train station and on a busy road. Possibly its just the location of the rooms I stayed in, but I could hear lots of noise going on outside from the 3rd floor. I think the problem is due to the old sash windows they have. Apart from that its lovely, but I would not stay there again.

“Charming, but lacking business amenities”

The Royal York is a charming, well-maintained hotel conveniently located immediately next to the main York train station and within a ten or fifteen minute walk from downtown, the Minster, the National Train Museum, and other sightseeing destinations. Pro: - Hotel staff were pleasant and efficient. - Rooms were clean, relatively quiet, and quickly serviced. - Nicely maintained facilities, and very convenient to downtown. Con: - Packages booked through Expedia list "Free High-Speed Internet", but this is incorrect. There is (wired only) limited internet access via Ethernet cables in the rooms. It's available in half-hour increments with limited bandwidth (or you can pay extra - about $25/day for a single device - for unlimited access). There is no wireless access. This would have been a deal-breaker for us had we known about it ahead of time on our week-long business trip. - The rooms were exceptionally warm, even in fall weather when it was about 70F in the warmest part of the day. Windows would not open more than 4 inches, and the supplied fan ran on a timer that maxed out at 120 minutes. - Hotel restaurant was vastly overpriced compared to surrounding locations. Breakfast is not included in packages booked through Expedia. - Some rooms face the hotel supply and loading area for taxis located next to the train station. They come and start taking out recycling and doing deliveries around 6:00am. You *will* we woken up if you are placed on this side of the hotel.

Area recommendations
York is relatively compact city with good, cheap public transit. If you have business with the University, consider more convenient (and modern) hotels on the river or South East side of town.

“Relaxing Time Out”

We took this short break as we were unable to afford to go abroad due to moving house and decided we wanted some time after the move just the two of us. The Hotel was a perfect location within the city, easy to find and within walking distance of everything we wanted to do which was perfect as it allowed us to get out and enjoy the city more and enjoy the fresh air. After a long day walking the city and climbing the many steps it was lovely to get in the fitness suite and enjoy a relaxing time in the pool, sauna, spa and hot tub. The staff were all very courtious and willing to help and wanted to ensure our stay was as smooth as possible. The room was in the old part of the hotel and as a result was a little dated in the furniture, carpet and bath suite etc but all were clean and fresh. The room was cosy rather than spacious but there was plenty of storage and we never felt like we were crammed in. The cable channels did not work on the TV therefore we were restricted to terrestrial. Overall the hotel was more than ideal for the stay we wanted and ensured that our stay within the city was just the relaxing break we were looking for.

Getting there
Very easy to find. Follow signs for the town centre and then the railway and you can not miss the hotel.
Getting around
York is a lovely compact city which makes getting around easy. It is very quaint and it is lovely to have an amble through the streets. If you are unable to walk, there are plenty of buses around making everything easy access.
Must see
York Minster, Clifford Tower, Jorvik Viking Centre, Dungeons, York Museum. Further afield, the Lavendar Fields and The Deep - submarium in Hull.
Shopping
I was totally amazed at the shopping opportunities within York. The city has not been spoilt with a massive shopping centre but all shops have been incorporated into the little lanes and old buildings. There was everything from large chains stores to unique boutiques, home and gift shops. The Designer Outlet just outside of town is a girls heaven!!
Dining
We found a wonderful family run restaurant - The Go Down - where everything was perfect. It is rather central on the opposite side of the road from York Dungeons. The hospitality, menu, decor, menu and quality of food really are second to none and it was not expensive. A trip to York would not be complete without a visit to Bettys - a wonderfully traditional style victorian afternoon tea shop.

“Would use the Hilton next time we go to York”

The hotel looked very impressive when we arrived the lawns were very pretty, booking in went very smoothly. We went up to our room on the second floor,it was a bit dated but very clean, we were at the back of the hotel so our view was of the train station and the bottle bins for the bar. The windows only opened about 4 cm, it was a very hot weekend and we did not sleep very well because there was no air con, the trains rattled through the night and so did the bottle bins. Breakfast was nice and plentiful, we did not eat in the restaurant but had a bar snack which was a bit expensive but very tasty. The hotel is only a short walk to most of the sights and the city centre 1/2 mile. If you book here make sure you're at the front overlooking the gardens

Area recommendations
The city centre there's lots of hotels and the city is very pretty
Getting there
We took the A1 most of the way from Lincolnshire very easy to get there used sat nav
Getting around
Walking is the best way to get around there are open top buses
What to pack
Good pair of walking shoes or trainers
Must see
Yok dungeons are excellent but look for special offers WHSmiths have two for one tokens at the moment . York museum is very interesting for all ages. The river cruise is very relaxing and informative. The jovjik centre is also a must
Shopping
There is a designer outlet of the A19
Dining
Lots of restaurants but suggest you try the pubs as well very good value and the local beers are excellent
Family-friendly activities
As listed under must- see but be warned the York dungeons are not really suitable for children under 10 years, they use real actors that interact with the public and they made both the wife and me jump a few times. While we were in there two families had to leave because there children were scared and crying.
Nightlife
As we are not under 40 we went to the cinema (there are two, one in the centre the other about 1/2 mile from the centre ) showing the latest film, lots of restaurants to suit all pockets and the pubs are a must, pick the old looking ones lots of character, my wife won't normally go in these pubs at home but even she enjoyed them( lots of people watching).

“Don't stay at this hotel!”

On arrival to our room we were shocked at the amount of dust on the skirting boards and furnishings. On entering the bathroom we then found toilet roll and toothpaste on the ceiling! On complaining we were moved to another room; with our belongings being transferred there for us whilst we went out. Wrong! On returning to the hotel at 11pm our bags were nowhere to be seen; they were still in our old room. Although the staff were friendly and helpful, this is not a hotel I would recommend or visit again. It is in desperate need of decoration and new cleaners!

“Drunken parties at 3am”

I stayed at the Royal York Hotel on Friday 10 Dec. The hotel looked great on the internet and all was well until about 2am in the morning when lots of noise was being made downstairs (we were on the first floor). At about 3am the noise became too much and i went downstairs to see what was going on. Unbelievably, right next to the reception desk (and thus the night manager) was a group of about 20 guests, many of which were very drunk, yelling and screaming. When I approached the night manager, his only response was to apologise and say that the group were also guests at the hotel and he didn't want to tell them to be quiet. After some more discussion he eventually went and did this. What amazed me was that he thought it was not a problem for the group to be making so much noise in the first place, right next to the desk. i can understand if the group was in their room and far away from the desk. Needless to say, the stay was not a pleasant one! Btw: I would not eat the free apples at reception. When i went to the lobby, many of them were strewn all over the floor. On seeing this, staff simply picked them up off the floor and put them back in the basket!
