Comfortable hotel in a good position

Pros: Very clean and breakfast was good.
Cons: Needs some renovation in parts. Parking is very restricted in the town but the NCP car park suggested by the hotel was just a short walk away.
Location: Central position close to the tram, the beach, the shops and with a good view of the sea
We booked this hotel for a single night stay before visiting relatives. It was a pleasant room with all necessary facilities and very clean. The lounge and dining room had lovely sea views and there was entertainment in the evenings. We didn't eat an evening meal in the hotel as there were alternative places within easy walking distance. Unfortunately we did not have time to enjoy the leisure facilities but if we stay again i will certainly take advantage of the pool and sauna. Decor was fresh and the feature staircase and vestibule were beautiful. The hotel still needs some renovation but there was a feeling of opulence and grandeur about this imposing old building.

Cons: Pool heating,no point in advertising a pool if you cannot use it

Stayed three nights in room 101 large room and bathroom.The room was clean and warm the only flaw was a damp patch in a corner of the ceiling,but the hotel was undergoing a program of redecoration .Good choice of food for breakfast with friendly staff.Unable to use the pool as there was a problem with the heating so the water was cold.I was satisfied with the hotel for the rate I paid,did not expect the Ritz and had a pleasant stay and would use again.

Good Hotel, bad room!

Pros: Grand staircase, location.
Cons: Do something about the kitchen fan noise for rooms 116/117
Location: Close to beach, shops, pubs, park & castle!
Hotel was fine, entertainment good, food OK, but problems with room 116. Room small, but clean but main problem was the noise from kitchen fans. Windows rattled & walls/bed shook. Complained to reception just after 10pm & were switched off, but came back on again at about 4am & couldn't get hold of reception to switch off. Hubby eventually got up & went down to find staff about 4.45 & they were switched off again, but just getting back to sleep & they started agin about 6.45- so just gave up. My hubby is up early every day & it was his birthday when we stayed was looking forward to lie in- I complained to reception but heard nothing since. Also couldn't open window, (window was frosted, nowe know why!!) Hotel needs to something about that room & 117 will have same problem -(pity you had to pay 'up front'!!)

Pros: Staff was pleasant and very helpful,and the free entertainment was good
Cons: Make sure you get the room on the pictures without having to ask
Location: location perfect for town and beach
The first room we was given was not the room which was shown on the booking site.We asked to change rooms which we did without any fuss.the second room we got was much better and we really enjoyed our stay at the royal.and would go back again.These booking sites shouldn't show pictures of rooms if you are not going to get.

Royal hotel is a joke

Booked a room there for weekend and arrived there was damp all over my rooms walls , pubic hairs on floor , toilet wouldn't flush and the window was wide open so room was freezing when I checked in late , would not recommend this to anyone poor hotel and not worth the money

Plaster falling of ceilings and walls.... Cracked tiles on bathroom floors.... Door handles hanging off.... Damp.... Loft hatches missing.... Trip hazards.... Carpets With holes in.... Oh and my foot went through a floor board..... As for staff, their comments where.... We have been in the hands of receivers.... We didn't even dare try any food!!!! What a nightmare!!!!

Asked if we could have a sea view and was given a large room with a stunning view for no extra charge. Dining room had been upgraded and breakfast selection good and cooked well. Only downside was coffee being a low standard, would have preferred filter coffee.

Pros: grand entrance. good bar/lounge. we were a party of fifteen and everyone enjoyed our stay
Cons: this has been a grand hotel and parts of it are a bit shabby
Location: very central. handy for the beach. plenty of bars nearby. town with loads of shops and a big shopping mall within a minutes walk
lovely, welcoming reception staff. nice big room and bathroom. clean. enjoyed time in the pool

The hotel condition need addressing, carpets worn and repaired using metal strips all over the place these metal strips usually used to make joints between rooms carpets at a door to another room, not here it is used to fix a torn carpet I suspect, I booked a Sea View Superior Double Room, ended up is standard room overlooking a street and buildings, The light fitting in the room dropping to pieces and not safe one of the lights was hanging, My wife was questioned about me at the Breakfast restaurant “where does he think he is going“ as I headed to a made-up table for two near the windows; Staff are not helpful at all, finally the room maid walked in un-announced to the room @ 08:45 while my wife in the bathroom ... last time I stayed in this hotel was 1976; today it is old worn-out hotel nothing was done to improve or keep up to date
