“Very comfortable and convenient location”
This hotel was a real surprise. Conveniently situated about ten minutes' walk from the railway station, and ten minutes from the center of town, this is an ideal spot for anyone wanting to explore the city, or use York as a base for traveling elsewhere. The room I had was well situated, with a comfortable bed - not too soft - and plenty of space to put my clothes. Being an old building, the hotel is a bit of a rabbit-warren of corridors and passageways, without an elevator: perhaps some of the rooms mght be difficult to access for those with problems of movement. However I think that the standards of service are some of the best I've sampled in my travels recently. The management make every effort to accommodate individual traveler needs, such as providing breakfast early for those with early appointments, and making sandwiches for anyone having to leave for a really early train connection. The breakfasts are hearty, but have sufficient choice for those who prefer not to eat a cooked meal. The hotel also offers evening meals: this was a real revelation. The chicken and stuffing I had for my Sunday night dinner was beautifully cooked, with fresh veggies as a side-dish. Sometimes in the past English cooking has been disparaged by comparison with, for example, French cooking: this hotel proved the opposite - that the English can provide really great food at reasonable prices. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone wanting to explore York on a limited budget.
“What a find!”
First off the staff are very friendly and helpful. Most of them have been at the Hotel for over 20 years. The rooms were clean and functional with freeview television in each. The breakfasts match any large hotel chain, with a wide range of fruit, breads, cereals and a choice of cooked meals. The price was cheaper than where some colleagues stayed in a large chain hotel and they didn't get a breakfast! I have no problems recommending this hotel
“Very Good. Value for money”
I would definitely recommend to others and will go myself too because the facilities provided in such a reasonable price are not available in the market. I checked other hotels too and facilities were less with high price. Best thing is the complementry breakfast that is made to your order along with general fruit and cereals breakfast. Simply Best
“Cute, authentic hotel”
This hotel was basic but met all of our needs. Rooms were clean and well-equipped and service was good. Breakfast was nice with a good range of food on offer. Hotel is probably a 15 minute walk into York so you will need a taxi if you are heading out for the evening.
“tight squeeze”
The hotel was in a nice location, breakfast was good and the service was friendly. It also was the only hotel still available for just one night. However, the room was so tiny (as was the bed) that when turning around in the bed my elbow hit the radiator. Exercising in the room was impossible. Given that it was only for one night and not too expensive, it was okay. Would I go there again - probably not.
“location great and would use again”
We arrived quite late on the saturday afternoon and checked in very quickly. The lady on reception was very good and very informative. After going to do a little shopping in the shopping outlet we returned back to the hotel the room was very comfortable and clean so after a couple of hours rest we decided to pop out for a few drinks and a meal There was a bar about 5 minutes walk from the hotel which was very welcoming so we stayed there for a few hours and then went for an indian meal just insude of the city walls which was fabulous. We returned to the hotel and had a really good nights sleep before going to the shops for more therapy. GREAT STAY AND WOULD RETURN AND RECOMMEND
“York - Holgate”
Hotel is located 10 - 15 mins walk from Micklegate. The hotel car park is small so get there early to ensure parking. If your intention is to look around York then you won't need to move the car again until you go home. Staff were friendly and helpful. My single room was small and up a narrow staircase on the second floor. But it was fine for me If
“Good Small Hotel in York”
This hotel is located in a quiet lane and I had lovely experience there.
“Lovely old hotel near with easy walk to everything”
I felt like I was in Mary Poppins, looking out across chimney tops from my little upper room. The owner was there serving breakfast and answering questions and all staff was kind and helpful. Cute, old building.
“Not bad but overpriced IMO”
Holgate Hotel is ok, but not worth the price charged for one nights stay. Breakfast is ok, nothing special. Location quite good for exploring York on foot by leaving car at the hotel. Overall had more of a B&B feel than a hotel.
