Handy for amenities

Posted 25-Jan-2015
The hotel is good for the central amenities& south beach &esplanade access. The room I had was spacious with en suite. The courtesy tray was lacking & would have been more tempting with a variety of biscuits. The room was okay for what I req'd for work but not if I was on holiday, but saying that there are better more expensive rooms.

Very dissapointing'

Posted 23-Jan-2015
Pros: The stairs,the breakfast.
Cons: LOTS
Location: Good shopping
Dissapointment all round, tiny room with a tiny window looking out to across the road to scaffolding on the hote lacross the road..Bingo was the main prioriy and entertainment was on too late.Parking and paying for it was way out of order if you moved from your spot,if you where lucky to find one, would be taken almost immediately by other drivers trying to find a space themselves. We where that disappointed we left two days early.Do I get a refund,i doubt it.

Convenient to Bus/Train - good location

Budget basic - catering to ultra budget crowd - lacks character - the sister hotel across the street was much nicer with character and warmth.

comments of stay

There is no parking at this hotel which is disapointing.I was surprised to be asked to pay as soon as I arrived.(Normally I pay as I check out.)It wasn't pointed out to me that there was a charge of £2.00 to use a credit card and a charge for a debit card also.Iwould have paid cash if given ttis information. The room was clean and warm and the breakfast was adequate.Unfortunately it was during the windiest day of the year and outside our room there was a loose shutter that banged all night.

Cheap but not cheerful

Posted 31-Dec-2014
The Britannia Grand Hotel looks splendid from the outside, perched high on the hill overlooking Scarborough bay. Inside, it's a different matter. When we arrived mid-afternoon, we joined one of the two long queues at reception to try and check-in. Most of the other people just seemed to be collecting keys. The queues snaked around the foyer, where every seat was taken mainly by an elderly person sitting with their coat on and looking slightly unhappy. Our room was large enough, but it looked as if it hadn't be re-decorated for a long while. The sheets and duvet covers were clean, but the room itself was not. We moved the chest-of-drawers on which the TV sat and underneath was thick with dust. The extractor fan in the bathroom was similarly clogged. We only stayed for two nights and breakfasted just once. The 7.30 breakfast was moved to 8 on our last day, so we just left. There had been plenty to eat and the view from the dining room is terrific, but the experience was marred by having to join separate queues for cooked food, toast and tea/coffee. The sight of children and some adults still in pyjamas was also rather off-putting. On a positive note, it was a cheap holiday. But now we know why.

Good but could be better

Posted 03-Nov-2014
Pros: Central location and great views of the South Bay
Cons: Concessions for local car parks, more reception staff
Location: It's Scarborough - go Google it!
We stayed at the Grand as we were guests at a wedding which had the reception there. The hotel is big and impersonal but its saving graces are it's cheap and the location is great for views of Scarborough and nearby shopping. Car parking is a nightmare and you'll probably end up paying £10 per day in the nearby multi-storey. Our room almost needed a map to find, down, round the corner, up, left, right, right etc but it was recently refurbished and good. Breakfasts were in a vast restaurant and it was mass catering so not the best experience. The staff who organised the wedding were great and could be more helpful and the reception venue and food were good. Would I recommend this hotel, well probably not as there are so many to choose from in Scarborough and plenty that where we've stayed that are better than the Grand, but then again probably not as cheap. The Grand was grand in it's heyday but out of choice we prefer smaller hotels.

room without a view

Posted 28-Oct-2014 on Hotels.com
Good locality, nice building. Plenty of breakfast choice. Good value. Check on type of room though..room with no view can mean room with NO windows so very stuffy. Parking not easy .. in the local area or ncp.
