Centrally located in the old Tombland area of Norwich, The Maids Head Hotel is a great base for a walking tour of the historical city. The city skyline is highlighted by two cathedrals, a Norman castle, medieval churches, the grandeur of Victorian architecture, an Art Deco City Hall and the 21st century landmark, The Forum. Norwich is famous for having a Church for every Sunday in the year and a pub for every day of the year. Walking tours start and finish at the Cathedral next door.

“Great location but....”
The Maids Head Hotel is an old building situated very conveniently for both tourist and shopper alike. There are elements of the interior that are quite charming, such as the bar, with wood panelled walls etc. Based upon the room we stayed in, room quality is barely adequate for a 4* hotel: the room was small enough that it was difficult for two people to move around the bed. The bed itself was only standard size. The ensuite was OK - great water pressure for bath and shower but I think perhaps doubtful drains. The main issue that must be appreciated is, if one is in a street facing room is the impact that this has on sleep quality. Our room had metal framed windows backed up with secondary double glazing. One of the metal windows could not be secured shut. Norwich has a lively nightlife and being so central, the consequence is certainly continued disturbance on a Saturday night through to the early hours. The windows provide little or no sound insulation. The night time disturbance might simply be the price that one has to pay for a central Norwich location.
“No Hot Water!”
Overall this hotel was good value for money and in a very convenient location. The only disappointing points were that checking in took a long time as the staff seem a bit disorganised, the lift wasnt working, and that we had no hot water in our room, it was lukewarm and sporadically ran cold. Upon reporting this to reception we were told that this happens if too many people are using the facilities at the time. Surely a hotel should be set up to cater for the maximum number of guests regardless?
“The Maid's Head, Norwich”
Stayed on a Friday night in October. A bit noisy when students and others were coming out of pubs etc...around midnight but there's no point staying in a central city location when you unreasonably want the peace of the countryside. Very convenient location. Helpful staff. Room very clean apart from mould and dirt on the sash windows. Lift not working when I stayed which would have been a problem for anyone with a mobility issue. Staff offered to carry suitacases.
“Only one problem”
The Saturday night was spoilt by noisy wedding guests coming outside to smoke at 1a.m. , otherwise the stay was fine.
“Great location”
Very good hotel in an ideal location, just across the road from Norwich Cathedral. Food good, tho' coffee at breakfast weak and watery. Room very comfortable - but a bit too hot, and noisy when we opened the window to get some air.
“Long week end in Norfolk”
The Maids Head is ideally situated for visiting Norwich and eating out being very close to the city center
“Nice, central hotel - room a little small”
This is a large hotel in a central location. There's is a well-lit car park to the rear of the hotel accessed via Pigg Lane where we left our car for the duration of our stay as it's only a short walk to the bars, shops and restaurants. Our check-in was swift and the staff were very friendly. Our room was a double on the third floor. It was clean, modern and quiet but it was on the small side. This was fine as we only needed a bed for one night but I wouldn't have wanted to stay in this room for more than that as we had to shuffle round each other and our luggage a bit. We didn't have breakfast or meals so I can't comment on those. We were a little disappointed on returning to the hotel at 11pm that the bar was closed. For a larger hotel, we would have expected the bar to remain open to guests. The night staff did however offer to bring drinks to our room. We would stay again for a similar trip to Norwich.
“Would like to go back”
I truly appreciate the staff person who mailed my wallet to me which had been left in a taxi on my way to the rail station and which was returned by the taxi driver. What a relief to get that back. The location is excellent for getting around the interesting places in Norwich. There is a nearby pub which is a bit noisy at night. I would certainly stay there again and would recommend to anyone. I found the personnel all very helpful. People in Norwich were also helpful and friendly.
“Around 1000 years of showing hospitality in Norfolk and still going strong.”
If you do not like narrow hallways, uneven staircases, crooked floors, low doorways, you should go to a boring modern hotel, if you like the quirkiness of very old you will love this hotel. The streets surrounding the hotel are cobbled and the surrounding shops and eateries are very quaint. The historic Norwich Cathedral is opposite. We loved Norwich and we enjoyed our stay at this hotel.
