“FIFTH TIME THERE WOULD STILL GO BACK”

I only have one criticism of the hotel, that is the room. This was our fifth time staying at the Univers. We have stayed in different rooms all over this hotel before it was re-furbished, when it was being re-furbished and in August just past, after re-furbishment. This I have to say was our most disappointing visit yet. Mind you nothing that a good scrub with mould cleaner would not solve. The shower curtain and the silicone sealer in the shower were mouldy, and although the shower was "compact" it was functional.

Area recommendations
Nice is a fantastic venue for a holiday. We have been 5 times, and will probably be going back again soon. However the 5 days we have just spent were a bit of an ordeal due to the unseasonably high temperatures 41 some days and 36 at 19.00.
Getting around
If you can afford it, go to Monaco and St. Tropez by boat, it is a relaxing experience and reasonably priced, the buses and the train are normally packed and add to the stress.
Must see
Casino Square in Monaco. Buy a drink and sit and watch the world go by.

“Great location! Will return!”

First of all, the staff was amazing! Very friendly and helpful in many ways. The location was perfect. Having never been to Nice, we didn't know what to expect, but we were just a short 5 minute walk from the beach & restaurants, & just steps away from shopping & banks. It was also about a 10 minute walk from the train station - which we did, without a problem! I travelled with 3 others & they were able to put us in side by side rooms. The rooms were comfortable & bathrooms were clean. My only complaints....the A/C in my room didn't work (the other room was fine) but we just left the windows open & slept through the street noise. And the free wireless only worked in the hallways or the lobby. We could not get a signal in the rooms. Other than that - which really are just luxuries - the 2 night stay was perfect! Would definitely return!!!!!

Area recommendations
I travelled with 3 friends - 2 of the 3 and myself are teachers and had just completed a tour with the students from our school. We extended our trip and travelled apart from the "group" for 10 days. We did Rome, Florence, & Venice, then took the train into Nice. LOVED LOVED LOVED Nice! Wish we had spent more time there. Our next stop was Barcelona. We decided to rent a car and drive (6 1/2 hours - not bad). We picked up the car at the airport in Nice, which was easy and inexpensive to get to by bus. The drive to Barcelona was easy - just costly in tolls. But it gave us the option to stop along the coast and see more of the small towns.
Dining
Must go to Pinocchio Gelateria while in Nice!!! Amazing atmosphere - sit outside and sip on your cafe or enjoy your beer as you watch the people pass by. BUT DEFINITLEY endulge in one of their famous desserts!!!! AMAZING! A MUST DO!

“Great Hotel in a Great location!”

I was really surprised with how great the hotel was. After having an horrendous experience with the hotels in Cannes, Hotel Univers was a great finish to two long weeks working in the French Riviera. I travelled to Nice with a few colleagues and we arrived at Hotel Univers with ease. It's right next to a tram stop so it was easy to get on a train from Cannes to Nice and then hop aboard a tram 2 minutes down the road. The hotel was very accommodating, our room was very spacious and the bathroom was clean and tidy. To be honest the only bad thing about the room was the size of the shower, which is quite compact, but you get used to that after a while. Other than that- no complaints. The service was really good too. From the concierge to the maid- everyone was very polite and helpful- something i really wasn't used to after being in Cannes.

Area recommendations
The surrounding area really adds to the charm of the hotel. Its just off the side of a busy promenade- with restaurants, retail stores and small cafes. The street is only busy during the day- at night its perfectly quiet and there are no disturbances at all. Up the street from the hotel is old town, which is where all the quaint restaurants and boutiques are. It really adds to the picturesque charm of the area. I guess its quite understated on the website- but its definitely worth checking out. lastly the beach is about a 5-7minute walk from the hotel- really easy to get to. But remember its a stoney beach! happy holidays!

“Excellant hotel.”

The Hôtel L'Univers couldn't have been better. Central location, very friendly and helpful staff, a lovely buffet breakfast in the morning and nice clean room. I would have no problem going back to this hotel.

“Good location and working wifi”

The hotel was full on an early check-in, the first night's room faced inwards with no natural light, however this was remedied next day most efficiently. Beds were firm but very comfortable. Wifi excellent, breakfast costly so fed elsewhere. Very good location.

Area recommendations
Near the old town and transport links without the cost or noise of the sea front. Everything important in walking distance or a cheap bus ride. Very friendly locals, lots of students and visitors of all ages. Beach stony and water can be rough.
When to go
Mid summer is probably too hot on the paved promenade

“Great Location”

The hotel was and room were clean and the service throughout was good. The only problem that we had was having the smallest double room available in the hotel but we coped as we were only there for 2 nights. The buffet breakfast was nice and had plenty of choice. And lastly as we were only there for 3 days the location was perfect right in the centre where its all going on. Very easy to get anywhere from this location.

“Nice place in Nice”

The hotel staff was very friendly. They spoke english enough to be of assistance, and seemed very genuine in thier desire to help you . The hotel location was a very short walk to the beach and shops and cafe's so location was great. Romm was small but nice. Overall I would recomend and would stay there again. Breakfast every moring was included in our rate and was also very good.

“My 3rd time in Nice, finally found "my" hotel!”

Loved this place. Location was great. Price was great. I can't stop saying the word "great!"

Area recommendations
The old city and the beach are where it's at. The morning market is fantastic. It's a bit over priced, but still worth the visit. If you like food, the old city is the only place to go. Find a gelato/ice cream stand and get a scoop of mango and a scoop of coconut, or just a single scoop of nutella flavored gelato.
Dining
The food is great here! One of my favorite restaurants in the world is in Nice. The Meranda really is special. While in Nice, try the, socca. Also the daube, and fried zuchini flowers (i think they're called beignet de courgette) are Nice staples. At la meranda, can't go wrong with the daube or, my wife's fav, the ox tail! If a restaurant is located too close to a busy area, avoid it! Do some research, and you'll find Nice is a great place for food!

“We'll be back again next year.”

This was the fourth time my wife and I have stayed in this clean and adequately appointed, for its age, hotel. Maid service was on a daily basis. The hotel has undergone major refurbishment within the last 3 years. The wifi connection does work most of the time, whether this was because of our location in the hotel I was not sure. However it did always work in the lounge and in the dining room which was sufficient as I could keep in touch with my daughter on honeymoon in the Maldives, on a daily basis using my ipod. The hotel is centrally situated, a stone's throw away from Galerias Lafayette a fabulous store on 5 levels which contained everything from Gucci handbags to tins of petit pois. The large central square is another 100 metres along the road. As described, the hotel has rooms of varying size and shape, some having baths and some having a shower. When we were there a week ago a card was provided in the electricity slot to keep the air conditioning on all the time which was fortunate as the day time temps. were in the high 20's and low 20's at night. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful and were courtious at all times. Their standard of english was excellent and a few words of french from us brought a smile to their faces. Breakfast was carbohydrate rich mostly cereals and bread etc. but more than adequate.

Area recommendations
There are many great restaurants in Nice particularly if you like seafood. The Promenade des Anglais at night is spectacular with the Castle all lit up at one end and the airport lights at the other. The flower market which is in a street that runs parallel to the Promenade des Anglais is a must see and smell, first thing in the morning. The view from the castle on the hill is spectacular especially when the planes are landing from the direction, and the view over the marina and harbour from here is superb day and night. A walk through the old town is also a must with its quaint narrow streets and high buildings and many small shops selling everything imaginable.
When to go
If you like lots of heat, then mid summer in Europe is the time to go. sometimes the weather in late September can be a bit changeable.
Getting around
There is a new tram service in Nice which is cheap and frequent. We went to Monaco, an absolute must when in Nice you can go by train, bus or tour. But the best way to go is by boat! This is bookable at the marina complex and is well worth the money if only for the cool sea breeze. There is also a boat trip to Cannes and St. Tropez which leave from the marina, but check days and times
