What to do in Niagara Falls

An attraction so gigantic it literally stands astride two nations, Niagara Falls crosses the border between the State of New York and the Canadian Province of Ontario.

Featuring three distinct falls – the Horseshow Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls – the Niagara River can be seen to drain unstoppably into Lake Ontario from Lake Erie in the south.

With such an awe-inspiringly large natural formation in their wake, it is no surprise that The Falls are home to two twin cities – Niagara Falls, Ontario to the north, and Niagara Falls, New York to the south. To enjoy the complete Niagara Falls experience, you simply must visit both. In this tale of two cities, it’s important to understand how the experience differs, although you can enjoy boat cruises from either side.

From the American side the best views of the Falls can be observed from the Prospect Point Park Observation Tower – an 86m tower of glass and steel which provides visitors the opportunity to enter the attraction at gorge level before ascending to the viewing platform. The viewing tower is also significant due to the fact it is the loading platform for the famous Maid of the Mist boat tour which takes guests on an initially serene tour past the American and Bridal Veil Falls before moving into the dense mist of the more violent Horseshoe Falls.

From Ontario, the Falls can best be viewed from the manicured gardens and platforms of Queen Victoria Park. From here, the American and Horseshoe Falls can be observed superbly, not least if you take the underground walkways that take you to observation rooms just inches from the falling water – a hugely popular spot for souvenir pictures.

At 160m high, the Skylon Tower offers perhaps the most spectacular view of them all, although the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara might provide even greater excitement for some.

As an added bonus, visitors on the Canadian side can look forward to spectacular illuminations of the Falls after dark fall – truly a magical way to enjoy one of the world’s most spectacular natural attractions.
