“Soon to be renovated with a name change”

Whn we arrived the receptionist was rude. The hotel is in need of some TLC we were told that the Helmsley will soon be no more it is being renovated and name changed. Itis a great location near to Subway within walking diatance of Grand Central and Times Square. The hotel was room only and the breakfast there was very expensive but there is a great little shop next door,Pax, where you can get eggs, bacon, porridge, cereals and a great cup of tea, a decent breakfast. They also do sandwiches fresh salad and are open to 9.30 at night. Across the the road is a great italian restuarant. When you had a shower only half of the water was fed to the shower the rest gave you a foot bath, and if you didn't keep the tap running all the water ran out of the sink before you finished. When refurbed it should be great. It has been taken over by the Starwood Group.

Area recommendations

Central Park is worth a visit. Maceys definately especially just before Christmas. Rockerfeller centre to see the christmas Tree.

Go for a direct flight changes are so exhausting.

Getting around

We were there for 4 nights and got an unlimited Metro Card for the subway.The roads are so busy the subway is best.

“Expensive for what you get.”

We were amazed to find that there were no tea/coffee facilities or cups/glasses in the room. Also we understood that we would have views over the city, but instead had views into an office block. Would not stay there again.

“Not impressed”

Clean hotel with a convenient access to many NYC attractions but will not recommend to others and will not go back myself since the service was bad. Unfriendly front desk and constant drilling and hammering sound could be heard in my room at past mid night and around 7am. This is not what you would expect from a good priced hotel like this one. Complained but nothing happened and no one ever came back to me. It just makes me so sad when something like this happens....

“Great value hotel”

Starting with the staff at the very busy reception desk, they were charming, amusing and helpful at all times. Staff in the breakfast room are equally friendly and remember what you like. The concierge has not been to 'smile school' but he does know his stuff. This was my second visit and I will stay again next year.

“Convenient location near Central Station”

We were only in NYC for 38 hours and only had time to sleep at the hotel; however, the time we spent there was delightful. Wonderful, comfortable bed and bedding, large, lush towels, excellent room service and friendly desk and wait staff. We highly recommend the hotel and would most definitely stay there again.

“Great hotel”

Very very satisfied with the hotel and services with exceptional views from high floors.very high standard service from front desk all the way threw to bar staff.some times front desk staff a little moody and the waitress for the bar some times moody.good location very close to the Chrysler building and only a 15 minute walk into time square.also have grand central station on your door step.

Area recommendations

I would recommend not to use the supper shuttle for airport transfer only because you are cramped in with 10 other people and it is a very bumpy ride.

“Good Value // Changes Coming (?)”

Staff advised that the Starwood Group purchased the hotel and would be upgrading and improving facility. Mentioned that it would be rebranded as a "W" Hotel. Building and rooms are okay, but you could tell there has been some deferred maintenance. Place looks tired. Service was great; tub didn't drain and the engineer arrived ten minutes after I called. Location is convenient on 42nd Street to Theater District, access to subway, etc. Price we found on Expedia was great.

“Great Location but a bit tired in places.”

The Helmsley is in a great location for exploring NYC, in the shadow of the wonderful Chrysler Building and near Grand Central Terminal and Times Sq. Our party took three rooms at the hotel and overall we enjoyed it. The lobby and bar are modern and friendly. However, some of the hotel rooms could do with an update, but they were clean and comfortable. The only frustrating issue we experienced was the electronic keys kept locking us out of our rooms. We then spent ages at reception getting them reactivated - and you need your passport to do this, so be warned.
