“NYC Great Boutique Hotel”

This is the 3rd time I stayed at this hotel-we love it! So close to Union Square and Soho- great neighborhood very safe area. We love Inoteca- the restaurant next door! Amazing food and genius mixologists. Also, great dancing and cocktails downstairs at the lounge connected to the hotel. Staff is so professional and friendly- we will sure to be back!

“Clean, Cute, and Simple...”

The Marcel is just that - clean, cute, and simple. These are 3 characteristics much appreciated in New York City. While the neighborhood may not be glammy, it is fairly quiet and plentiful with taxis - two more characteristics much appreciated in New York City!

“Basic, average, forgeful”

Good location, but I rather to be further south. Clean, but the bathroom needs maintenance. Room: decent size, missing a simple luggage rack. Bed is not comfortable, their walls, windows, and flooring make for not a good sleep allowing for all kinds of noise to disturb your sleep. AC is a night mare. Not a great place for the money.

“Great Hotel, great staff for a quiet part of NYC”

This is our second time here and we were not disapointed. It isn't amazing (i.e. Housekeeping didn't replenish toiletries till the last day and the air con is LOUD yet strangely soothing) but the staff are always happy to help (Particularly the Concierge and Raoul on the door). The room is very small but has everything you need, bed is VERY comfy (although not great if you are over 5'9") and overall it is very clean and perfectly formed. We would happily stay here again and again - we know what to expect and are overall very happy with the package. Also I left my perfume behind so I need to go again to get it back!

Area recommendations
Recommended areas are Tribeca and Noho for great small shops. Macys, as it is more reasonably priced than bloomingdales. Just for the weirdness, Union Square is cool too - nice farmers market in the middle.
Getting around
Taxis are reasonable but be prepared not to be able to hail one between 4.30 and 6 when they are all swtiching over shifts and all off duty. The Metro/Tube - get a 7 day card or a $10 top up. It is a lot different to the UK, but you can get around easily once you get the hang of it. Better still, bring decent shoes and walk every where. That is the best as the simple layout makes it easier to navigate.
What to pack
Walking around makes you sweaty so bring doubles of clothes so you can change... posh restaurants insist on a jacket so bring that. October is warmish so a light jacket and waterproofs are important... but not as important as comfortable shoes..BRING THEM NO MATTER HOW UGLY! January is cold, but you can get decent winter coats here so fill your boots once you arrive.
Shopping
Macys is cheaper than Bloomingdales. Try Tribeca and Noho for smaller boutique shops that are reasonably priced. AS well as food, they know how to do great boots - perfect if you are travelling in october time as you can get some great footwear! And some places still have the summer sales on.. remember TAX!!! its always added on afterwards! If you can bear the cold, then get there mid january when the sales are on and with the exchange rate you can get some awesome bargains. Century 21 in Courland st (near WTC) is a good TK maxx. Best to get there early (doors open 7.45) to beat the herds and ideal if you have jet lag and are up early. Shops dont always open till about 11am on Sunday - you have been warned.
Dining
Coffee is not amazing here so don't get upset if you are drinking what feels like ash water.. Mikeys Diner in Flatiron/Gramercy for lovely Turkey Burgers and Sesame seed milkshakes and East Japan in the same area for lovely cheap Japanese food. Budakon - Book months in advance but the service in the bar area is not great. Our waitrose spilt drinks everywhere and wasnt particularly apologetic and got the order wrong. Food was lovely however, they can take your drinks and food before you have even finished them so that is frustrating and lets the place down. Try the Alaskan Black Cod here (and eat it quick before they take your plate away!) and the Malted Choc tart Tao - Great food, very posy, but great food and extremely helpful waiting staff. Recommended are the dumplings and the fortune cookie with white and milk Choc Mousse Serendipity - OH MY GOD! Amazing desserts and great Chicken Pot Pie... Humble pie (like a peanut butter banoffee pie is to DIE for) as are the apple cinamon and choc sundaes... make sure you visit here..... Pegu - great mini scallop burgers but do hold on to your drinks as they tend to remove them quickly!

“Solid choice”

Stayed here for a week. Ripped sheets, spotted stains. Service was great though. The elevators are ridculous, slow, always full, and you can be waiting around 5-10 minutes for it to come. Slightly seedy area, but cheap hotel for decent quality.

“Exceptional”

The staff was extraordinarily friendly. They made you feel as though you were a long lost friend instead of an informal guest at a hotel. Granted, during my visit, there were torrential downpours which made it difficult to roam around the city. The staff recognized that some of their guests were without umbrellas so they offered these lovely silver and black umbrellas to the guests who wished to brave the elements. The room was impeccable, clean and gorgeous decor. I think I want to dectorate my home in Marcel's fashion. The elevators had a unique way to let you know that it was arriving on your floor. Instead of that inssent "ding ding ding" one would normally hear, it would play music as it got closer. Such a unique and perfect idea. I will definitely visit here again. I am also intrigued with the "Polar Club" underneath the hotel. Although I did not have the time to visit it, I would like to see the Ice Caves it advertised.

“Great location, friendly staff”

Stylish hotel in a good location for sightseeing away from the bustle of Times Square but close enough to visit. Staff very friendly and helpful. Minor point a fridge and coffee/tea making facilities in rooms would have been good. Rooms are small but well furnished - afterall this NYC.

Area recommendations
Gramercy Park is often overlooked for other flashier areas but is worth a visit.
Dining
Bluebell Cafe not even a block away is a great neighbourhood restaurant.

“Very nice affordable Manhattan hotel”

I stayed at the Marcel in a deluxe double with my wife and 14-year-old son for four nights in July. We found very few things to complain about. The location is around three blocks from the nearest subway station, and around a half hour walk from Times Square, so it helps to be good walkers. There are several restaurants and small grocery stores close to the hotel. The hotel breakfast is overpriced, but we bought food and coffee at a bagel shop just around the corner and ate it in the 10th floor rooftop lounge of the hotel. Our mini fridge contained no alcoholic drinks, and there don't seem to be any ice machines. I'm not crazy about the latest design of very shallow sinks (our hotel in Chicago had this too), but the rest of the bathroom was very practical. The beds were comfortable for sleeping, and the A/C worked well, but I found it helpful to wear earplugs at night because of the noise coming from the A/C unit and the street below. Service was easily accessible (no line-ups) and excellent. Overall, we were very satisfied and would definitely stay here again.
