“Brilliant Hotel in New York”
Excellent hotel. Staff extremely helpful and pleasant. Room very clean and well maintained. Hotel situatated in good position for access to all areas and subway.
“Great value for central location”
This hotel was ace value compared to just about anything else we could find in NYC. Therefore, we were understandably nervous that it would be a bit rubbish! However, I'm pleased to say it was ace! The staff couldn't have been friendlier and always greeted you with a smile. We were given a basement room as it was all that was available, but with the assurance we'd be moved the following day. True to their word, all of our luggage was moved the following day up to the 3rd floor. The basement is fine, there just isn't much light coming in as your window's at street level, so request a non basement room if poss. The rooms are pretty tiny but are clean, have some hanging space and a TV and under bed storage. What more do you need-let's face it, you won't be in a lot! Despite the fact that we were looking out onto busy East Houston St, it wasn't too noisy either. The hotel is only about 4 or 5 blocks from all the Soho shopping, a few blocks up from Little Italy and there are LOADS of places to eat and drink up 1st and 2nd Ave, just minutes walk away. You can easily walk to Greenwich Village too. If you're too tired to have dinner out, the Whole Foods supermarket next door does cold beers and decent take away food, both hot and cold.
“New York true Gem”
Hotel situation, location, accommodation all perfect for us - family with 1 year old plus my wife's sister & best friend - lovely staff, reasonable amount of space for New York hotel, we had large amount of luggage including all baby gear + my road bike in it's case & we didn't struggle. Plenty to entertain all within walking distance & 2nd Avenue subway station 1 block away when we traveled to other areas in city. our rooms were ready to check into earlier than the usual 3.00pm so we could drop luggage & get out & about within half an hour of our arrival to make most of time in one of the most amazing cities in the world. super comfortable beds & decent bathrooms (again for New York). Whole Foods 1 block away is great for breakfast without spending fortune every day. I'd use this hotel again & I consider myself a New York expert.
“not SoHo, but excellent location”
Don't worry that the GEM Hotel isn't really in SoHo, the location is excellent. The hotel is probably specifically in NoLita, superbly placed for the Lower East Side, Little Italy and SoHo (really only a short walk away). It's right on the F-V subway at 2nd Ave, close to the J-M-Z subway on The Bowery, the B-D at Broadway/Lafayette and the no.6 subway at Bleecker Street (although the uptown and downtown lines have entrances a block apart), so access to the rest of Manhatten is easy. There are loads of cafes and restaurants all nearby and the New Museum on The Bowery. The accommodation was fine, in good condition and very clean, but of course pretty small and the bathroom was tiny. The bed was really comfortable and the only main drawback was very little space to hang any clothes.
“GEM HOTEL - SOHO”
a very nice small hotel with not so large rooms, in the not so downtown, downtown area. Service is very good, shower problem fixed next day. Room serviced everyday. Nice staff. Recommended.
“Small friendly hotel”
The location for us was ideal as wanted to spend most of our time in Mid and Downtown Manhatten. It is a young vibriant area. Anthony the receptionist was great at recommending clubs, and a throughly nice guy. You step out the door onto the Subway. Katz an orginal American diner is just down the street where we had breakfast each day. The only down side is the rooms are very small with very little wardrobe space but if you want to just dump your things and go,then its ideal.Which is what we did.
“Good location, comfortable room”
Great location both for going out and shopping. The room was small but nicely decorated with a comfortable bed and flatscreen TV. There's no breakfast but it's easy to pick up something good nearby. The staff were polite and helpful.
“DECENT ENOUGH”
IF YOU LIKE IT BOHO AND NOT TO TOURISTY THIS IS THE BEST AREA TO BE IN, IN MY OPINION. THE HOTEL IS CLEAN, COMFY AND FRIENDLY, VERY HELPFUL STAFF. A LITTLE ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES WHEN COMPARED TO SOME NEARBY PLACES, BUT I WAS SATISFIED. WORTH A PUNT
“Lovely staff - pity about the street noise.”
Lovely hotel and very pleasant and helpful staff. The only problem was the excessive street noise. Rooms were very compact too.
“Bit disappointed...”
Great location...but during our 4 night stay our room was only cleaned once....it is worth noting also that the rooms are extremely cramped, no wardrobe space and not even enough floor space to open your suitcase fully....bed was comfy though....
