“Work on your cardio before coming”

I went into it with an open mind, sense of adventure, and zero expectations. I even brought my own towel, sheets, pillow cases, and toilet pape. Here is my account of the stay. This place is in Chinatown (smells like fish but so does most of NYC)Upon arrival you are greeted by a flight of stairs. Then a security door. You have to get buzzed in.I was comforted by that. The staff was nice throughout the whole stay.Feels family owned. We were on the fourth floor.Yup, more stairs with luggage for 8 days, 2 people. If my boyfriend hadn't been with me and not buff I would have turned around and left. This is how intense these stairs are. The room was small-it's NY,I get it.We were so happy to see our room had a toilet and showerWe thought it was shared.Went to sit on the bed and almost broke my tail bone.I read other reviews and thought they were exaggerating. Nope, there is a wood frame with springs that don't bounce and fabric over it.No padding.Pancake pillows on a skillet. If you have back or neck pain/injuries you cannot physically sleep on this.My butt hurts laying here typing. The room is clean. The towels are thin but I brought my own.Packaged toothbrushes were nice.Hot water-yes!No free wifi-boo.Mismatched furniture-oh well.Every night from 1-3am we heard loud clanking. So irritating on top of the fact I was sleeping on a metal bed.Stay here if you're desperate.there is a best western really close, maybe the beds are better.Maybe less stairs or an elevator.

Area recommendations
If traveling alone, avoid most places that are quiet. I'd stay more towards the busy areas. I would have never stayed in Chinatown alone as a female

“Perfect hotel for quick break”

Cheapest hotel we could find for the weekend and read some less-than-stellar reviews - all a waste of time. The hotel was perfectly clean, the beds were comfortable and hard to climb out of in the morning! The staff were friendly and very helpful, although with some of the older staff the language was a slight barrier (the hotel is based deep in Chinatown) For a short stay it was beyond perfect, and we will definitely stay there next time we visit New York. The only potential downside was a lack of lift. I genuinely don't care about having to carry my bag up a flight of stairs but some people might. Maid service was by request. Plenty of supplied toiletries in the (very clean) bathroom, and soft drinks available from reception

“The nastiest place ever!!!!”

We came in the first night and pulled back the bedding only to see a bloody mess on both the top and bottom sheets. The sheets had not been changed from the previous occupants. There was no mattress on the bed- it was a box spring. We laid down towels put our tee shirts over the pillow cases and took sleeping pills. I complained the next morning and if I was willing to wait an hour we could change rooms. I took a look at the next room and it was worse then the first, dirtier and smaller with just a box spring on the bed. We decided to stay with the first room but asked to have clean bedding and towels. We left for the day only to return to bedding on the floor and a clean set of bottom and top sheet- no clean pillow cases or towels- on the bare box spring. We stayed 3 days and they never once cleaned the room, replaced dirty towels, or gave us clean sheets. If it wasn't for sleeping pills I never could have done it. Camping out on cardboard in the park,if it was safe, would have been preferable. Even if someone was paying me I would never stay in this hotel. It was the most horrible place I have ever experienced in my 54 years. I was really disappointed that Expedia would use this hotel and I hope they think twice about having them as a choice in future package deals. DO NOT STAY HERE - We only survived the experience with the help of drugs.

“Horrible!”

Mold in the shower, phone not working, night light (other than the ceiling light) not working! The walls were paper thin.

“For your Basic Traveller”

My mother and I were staying in New York for two nights, and we wanted a hotel that was within our budget (which was nonexistent) and near a venue where I was taking a class. We had no plans to stay in our room for long periods of time-- we just needed a place to sleep, shower, and keep our stuff. The room we got was a double, and it suited us fine. The room was very clean and a bit small, but it suited our needs. The only complaint I'd have about the room was that the bed was really hard and squeaked like crazy. Otherwise I feel like it was a good choice on our part, we needed the bare essentials and thats what we got.

Area recommendations
The hotel is pretty much in the center of the city, so its easy to walk all over New York.

“A Place to Sleep”

My husband and I were on a budget- we got what we paid for, and the benjamins don't go far in NYC. The place was cramped and dingy, but there was a working toilet and hot shower. If all you want to do is store your things and sleep, then don't complain about the place. It's a deal, not a steal.

“Mixed feelings”

The location could not have been better. As for the room itself, it was clean except for excessive mold on all the grout in the shower. The bed was great. The very nice television only received four stations in English. It was a nice TV/DVD unit, but no DVDs were available to rent or buy in the area. The only light was a harsh overhead one, no reading lamp of any kind. No window. No drinking glass. No washcloths. No bath towels, just two hand towels. The management was pleasant, but they would not honor my request for early check in. Many guests were unsavory, and at least one drug deal was consummated while I was there. It was extremely noisy, with guests screaming and slamming doors at all hours. If you go, PACK DVDs!

Area recommendations
At this point, New York is so much safer than it was decades ago, that I would recommend almost any area in Manhattan. I am not currently familiar with most areas of the other boroughs, but I understand they are also safer than they were in, say, the 1970s. I like this neighborhood, because it is in Chinatown, where the best cuisine in the US is readily available. It is walking distance to Little Italy, Soho, Tribeca, Greenwich Village, etc. Subways were relatively close as well.
Getting there
Please be advised that taxi rates are strictly limited to $45 from LaGuardia, so do not allow a driver to charge you more. There are three major airports serving New York, plus a major railway station and bus terminal. Locate your hotel on a map before traveling to New York.
Getting around
It is easier to get around New York than practically anywhere else in the US. The subway system is far more extensive than any other, and there have been improvements in track conditions, speeding one's trip. However, off-hour service is much less prevalent than in the past. It is a walking city. While New York is, by far, the most populous city in the US, Manhattan is actually rather small, physically. It is easy to travel in much of Manhattan on foot, if you are a walker. There are also city buses, sightseeing buses, and many cabs. In Manhattan, you can catch a cab from practically anywhere. Be sure to get a subway map, and a good street map would also be very helpful. You might acquaint yourself with the names of areas in New York, so that you can more easily find what you are looking for.
Must see
The Statue Of Liberty The Empire State Building Ground Zero The Staten Island Ferry (at least in warm weather) Live plays and musicals. There are many Broadway shows, but also Off-Broadway shows can be both less expensive and more risk-taking in content. There are two discount ticket lines. The famous one is in Times Square at 46th to 47th Streets. There is also one in lower Manhattan, near city hall. Museums. Whatever your interest, museums covering it are located here. From large art and history museums, such as the Museum Of Natural History, and The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, also specialty museums such as art galleries, the TV/Radio museum, tenement museum, and many others. If you like architecture, walk the streets and look up. Above the ground floor shops you will see many interesting architectural examples of periods from 1785 to the present. Central Park carriage rides. These carriages can also transport you throughout the city. If you have time, seek out locations in other boroughs, such as The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, The Brooklyn Museum, and The Bronx Zoo. The Yankees are in The Bronx, and the Mets are near LaGuardia Airport. The Rangers and the Knicks play in Madison Square Garden.
Shopping
New York is one of the shopping capitals of the world. From large famous stores, such as Macy's and Bloomingdales, to street vendors in lower Manhattan.
Dining
New York ex-patriots will tell you they miss the food as much as anything else. You can try cuisines here you have never heard of. Restaurants come and go, but there are some landmarks. You can eat the best Italian and enjoy the best pizza in Little Italy. You can find all kinds of superb Asian cuisines in Chinatown. There are steakhouses, such as The Homestead, which have been in business for years (in this case since 1840). The deli is the best in the US. Whatever you want to eat, or try, you will find it in New York.
Events and shows
A recent trip discovered 9th Avenue closed in the 40s and 50s, for a street fair. There are free concerts in Central Park during the summer. There is opera, ballet, modern dance, theaters from the avante garde to Broadway. The Julliard School, perhaps the finest music school in the US, offers concerts. The Museum Of Modern Art has free showings of classic and historic films. Concerts of all kinds are performed in the city. You might check New York magazine to help plan what you would really like to attend.
