“Great value hotel in NYC”
I have recently returned from a five day stay at the Howard Johnson Express in Queens and have to say that I was very impressed. The hotel was very clean, our room was serviced each day and well looked after. The hotel is very well located in the residential Woodside area of Queens. It is located about a five minute walk from the subway station and the subway ride will take you to Grand Central Station or Times Square in about 10 minutes. The Q60 bus also stops directly outside the hotel, which takes you to 2nd Ave in Manhattan. The hotel is close to a number of eateries and is also very close to the Queens Centre Mall. Always felt vey safe in the area and travelling on the subway. This place is an excellent base if you are wanting to visit New York City and want to save money.
“Second stay”
Second time we have stayed at this hotel, this time with daughter and son-in-law. Far cheaper than Manhattan - 5 minutes walk from Woodside subway then 20 minutes to Time Square ($10 card does 5 trips). Minimal but welcome breakfast from foyer. Able to leave luggage until 4.00pm on checkout day for return flight to UK at 8.30 pm - taxi $35. Will use again and would recommend to anyone.
“Excellent if you can't afford central Manhattan”
The only reason the "Quality of Hotel Service" is not a "5" is because they seem not to keep the laptop used for customers' internet access maintained properly, so it took at least half an hour for me to confirm my departing flight and print my boarding card, as the computer was erratic and the printer, although apparently connected, didn't work - had to use the manager's computer and printer instead. Generally though, for a two star hotel, a high standard all round and would go there again.
“Good hotel and no bed bugs”
I travelley to NY with my 21yr old daughter. We both had big birthdays this year.. if you are coming from Newark change to LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) this will take you to Woodside and cost $3.50.Take the exit onto the avenue from the platform do not go into station at top of ave turn left and walk up to launderette which is accross the road walk down the avenue sorry cannot remember number and hotel is at bottom about 7 minutes from station. After your arrival buy a 7 day metro ticket for subway to go to Manhatten. Hotel was fine the bed was huge there was no wardrobe but some hangers. I had emailed hotel before I left UK. I think if you book with Expedia for 2 people uou get coffee maker, iron and hairdryer. Dont bother bringing your own unless it is dual voltage. The hotel did keep our luggage and several other people's on the last day. This hotel is fine if you are sightseeing and go out in the morning and back at night to sleep. We did not try any restaurants or pubs at Woodside and not much beside hotel. If you intend to shop I think that it would be better to stay in Manhattan as you could leave the parcels down and go back out.
“Needs updating”
Generally ok and cleanish. But rooms in bad need of updating with new carpets, furniture. Location in Queens is about 1hr from Times Square, so not all that convenient. But then it is cheaper than Manhattan Island.
“Cheap for New York”
The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the subway which takes you directly to Times Square. The surrounding area is shabby and the are not many places to eat and limited supermarkets. The hotel itself is also somewhat shabby and the tiny room was clean. That said though, the rates are reasonable for NYC and breakfast is included. You'll have to eat breakfast in your (tiny) room as the breakfast area only has enough space for the food.
“Chosen due to price and proximity of transport to NY City”
Hotel room very small - fridge in room and continental breakfast in lobby. This hotel was reasonably priced and suited our needs(you get what you pay for). The underground subway was only 10 minute walk away and took us straight into Times Square/Grand Central station, approx. 20 mins duration.
“its ok”
plus: it was near subway so can travel relatively freely, near la guardia airport, staff helpful, room clean enough minus: small room, breakfast was a joke just ceareal and muffins and rubbish coffee/tea no where to sit and eat had to take to my room quite basic really but i guess you get what you pay for
“Good on a budget but if you can pay that little more for somewhere better”
Here are the positives: Hotel wasn't too bad, its very close to subway if you want to get into Manhattan or coming from JFK. Room was good size and daily cleaning. The area around the hotel isn't too bad, never once felt unsafe a very friendly corner of 65th Street and Woodside Ave. Negatives: They don't store luggage (because of security concerns don't expect to find lockers anywhere) we had to go to JFK to check luggage in. Breakfast is shockingly poor, only cereal and muffins.
“Not impressed”
Very outdated furnishing and decor. The reception area was shabby and there was hardly any space to move around. The continental breakfast had to be eaten in the reception area with no chairs or tables which I thought was appalling. The bedroom decor was very unattrcative and the ice machine broke down more times than it worked. This was a real shame as the weather was hot and there was no fridge in our bedroom! I definitely didn't enjoy my stay and will definitely not be going back to the Howard Johnson Express Inn!
