“excellent hotel - thank you - again”
we have been to this hotel several times now and have always found hotel reception to be very helpful and friendly. . rooms are clean. all you need for city break - close to empire so great for going back to drop off bags etc. breakfast in the adjoining building is great value for money and freshly cooked etc- recommended hotel to friends and will be back again this year for thanksgiving. thanks all from The Stirlands..
“The girls on tour trip”
6 ladies stayed in this hotel for 6 nights in November 2011 - for 4 of them it was their first time in New York and we had a great time. For my daughter and I, it was our 4th time in this hotel - that should tell you something. This is not a fancy, upmarket hotel at all but it is clean and central (10 mins to Macy's so no problem to walk back with all your shopping bags!). OK the furniture is dated in the rooms, and the staircase is dated too, and the lift is small, but the showers are great and the rooms are spotlessly clean - it really is all you need there. How long are you in your room anyway - you are in New York!!! We arrived back to the hotel late every evening and were out by 9am every morning. 24 hour Reception staff are great and because it is a small hotel, there are no queues to access your safe (which is free!) at any time. Lots of cafes on your doorstep, great for breakfast. And there is the Captain's Cafe on the ground floor of the hotel. Will definitely stay there on our next trip, which is in the planning already!
“Perfect for travelers”
We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. The location - E. 32nd Street - was great! #6 subway station at the end of the street, few blocks from Macy's in one direction, 42nd Street in the other, lots of great stores and restaurants all around you. A cafe is attached to the hotel which serves breakfast and has take out. Front desk staff and maids were very pleasant, room was super quiet. We would definitely check out availability here first the next time we stay in NYC.
“No Coffee! No Room Service!”
The hotel and the staff were excellent. However, it was impossible to get coffee in the mornings without going out and walking a block and a half to find a place open. They have no coffee pots in the rooms and the room service they advertised was "not working" during my stay. Otherwise it was an overall good experience.
“Great value.”
I was a bit concerned based on some of the reviews I'd read on this site, but our experience was not like theirs at all. Check-in was efficient and friendly. We were on the 4th floor so used the stairs mostly - I concur with some that the elevator is not that fast. The cleaning staff were always great, both in performance and personality. The coffee shop in the lobby was small but very quick. The only thing we had trouble with was room temperature. There was no thermostat in the room and turning off the valve on the register didn't help, so we had to run the air conditioner all night to balance it out. And obviously an extra chair and free wifi in the rooms rather than the lobby would be nice, but these are pretty minor quibbles. For the combination of price, location and quality I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
“Would use again”
Room a little small but as you would expect in N.Y.C unless you pay big bucks! Hotel in a good area, 5 minutes from Empire State. Staff helpfull and friendly. Nice CLEAN room and bedding. Nice Deli next door where you can also get a beer. We would use again if we visit N.Y.C.
“Would go back again, clean and comfortable and in a great location”
Me and my sister-in-law stayed 4 nights in Grand Union and loved it.The staff were very helpful. The room was clean with plenty of storage and a mini fridge. The bathroom was clean with toiletries provided and a hairdryer and the shower was brilliant. The windows are a bit old but I just used earplugs and had a good nights sleep. We had a brilliant view of the Empire State Building from our window. Captain's Cafe next door (adjoined by door) served lovely food and the staff were very friendly. It was an easy walk from Penn Station and every day we walked up to Times Square on a choice of avenues, takes about 20 mins with lots of shops on the way and even after a show we felt very safe walking back to the hotel but a cab only cost a few dollars. The tube to downtown / uptown is just on the next block and is easy to work out but people were so helpful and when we looked a bit dumbstruck always offered help. Plenty of places to eat around and we had a lovely meal at a Rottisery on Fifth Avenue just up from the hotel. We ran out of time but still managed to have a couple of hours in Central Park but it certainly needs a day to see it all. We walked to the Boating Lake and sat beside it sipping a lovely cocktail.
“Helpful reception staff”
The reception staff at Grand Union were very helpful and provided great advice about the hotel, airport transfers and sites to visit in New York. The provided a subway map and a street map of the city on arrival which was very useful. Good information available in foyer. Room comfortable and clean. Lift a bit slow, but worked.
