“Repeat visitor”

While it was not as fabulous as I remembered from previous visit, it was still a good stay. The beds are super comfy and rooms decent size considering what other hotels offer. The staff was always friendly and courteous. We loved the location with it's close proximity to places of interest, dining options and the subway line. The downfall of having a nicer room with a view is the street noise; it was endless, but of no fault of the hotel. There were small issues with the blinds, toilet and grout in shower.

Area recommendations
The Upper West Side where Hotel is located is nice if you want to get away from the crowds of Time Square. Other neighborhoods downtown are nice to walk around in and take in the real life if the city away from souvenir shops.
When to go
Holiday time is great for decorations and general holiday mood.
Getting around
This is a walking city. Use the subway, cabs and buses as supplements. You get a better feel for the city at ground level.
Dining
We stayed away from the chain restaurants and sought out the small local places and it was worth it. A local recommended Columbus Ave in the Upper West Side and we were not disappointed by the options and the fare.

“EXCELLENT HOTEL ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE OF NEW YORK”

This hotel is not modern, but it is reasonable, comfortabe & well located on the Upper West - Side of Manhattan. You will need to take the a bus or subway to the down town theatre district. The subway is only a few blocks away from the hotel. Take the #3 express train to Times Square or Penn Station and the ride will be less than 10 minutes. There are many small restaurants in the area. But sadly, as of December 2011, they have demolished my favorite the Manhattan Diner to make way for another multi-million dollar condo. These modern condos are destroying the quaintness of Seinfeld country.

“Wonderful West Side Location”

I thought this was a great little boutique hotel. Some of the staff were excellent. Some not so much. It took them over an hour to retrieve my car...make sure you call ahead in plently of time. I would stay again and would recommend this to my friends. I would like to see better prepared staff.

“Outstanding service! Definitely going back!”

The staff at HB could not have been any nicer or accomodating. Easily one of the best values on the Upper West Side. Make sure to impress your loved one with the Celebrations package. Looking forward to staying there again in the Spring!

“Go for it!”

One of the better reasonably priced hotels in Manhattan. Ignore the bad reviews that took place during this hotel's renovation. Now that is done, it is a very nice, quiet, excellently located hotel on the upper West Side. Convenient to the subway and the Museum of Natural History and Times Square. Nice simple yet stylish room. Only minor compliant is that there was not a dresser in the room, although there was a nice big closet.. Go for it.

“Devoted staff, great service, hotel "a faded lady"”

The outstanding thing about the Belleclaire is its wonderful attentive staff, mostly of eastern European origin. The hotel was probably converted from a lovely pre-war apartment building and remodeled several times. The exterior was scaffolded. The recent interior remodeling resulted in small rooms with an Art Deco flavor and ingenious and beautiful tiny marble bathrooms. It's very clean. Amenities are sparse; only a single ice machine off the lobby and a coffee urn in the lobby. There is no associated restaurant, coffee shop, bar or room service, but they will do laundry. We were visiting our family and the hotel was very convenient for us and we like the neighborhood, a bit above Lincoln Center, a few blocks below Zabar's, lots of shops on Broadway. We will certainly stay there again.

Area recommendations
We grew up in NYC and our family still lives there; our children live about 15 blocks away. We were interested in staying close to the family and know the neighborhood intimately. We like the upper west side- -Lincoln Center to Columbia University for family visits. If you are going for a posh weekend, you might consider, the mid town to upper east side.
Getting around
New York has wonderful public transport. We especially love the subway. Don't take the car unless you have young children, infirm elderly or lots and lots of luggage. It is very expensive to park, street parking is very hard to find and not always safe, the traffic is horrific, you can't realistically drive around Manhattan and taxis are plentiful and not more expensive than parking the car.
Dining
New York has truly wonderful and very varied restaurants. Very posh, world class restaurants abound, although many are expensive. The variety of ethnic cuisines is mind-boggling and they are often very reasonably priced. Don't be afraid to get on the subway or bus and go to an ethnic neighborhood to eat the local specialties. You can find any type of food you might like at any hour of the day or night.
Family-friendly activities
Although our children are grown and we are still waiting for grandchildren, we have some favorite activities for children. Young kids need to run around- take them to the park, between activities where they have to be quiet and /or sit still-- Central Park but don't forget others- Riverside Park, etc. The Central Park Zoo is wonderful, for the younger ones, don't miss the Children's Zoo. The aquarium and the Bronx Zoo are a trip form midtown Manhattan but great when you get there. The Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium are great favorites. There are concerts for kids but not all the time. Some Broadway shows are quite kid- friendly (Lion King, etc). FAO Schwartz is a toy wonderland- be sure to lay down ground rules before going. The usual sights like the Empire State Building (not so interesting to the very young) and the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center (tree, ice skating) are fun- Skate at the Wollman Memorial rink (called something else now) in Central Park- bigger, more kid friendly and cheaper. Can visit St Patrick's Cathedral or the oldest Synagogue on Eldridge St. A visit to the old Jewish neighborhood on the lower east side is also fun for the so inclined- Katz's Deli, the Tenement Museum- Don't miss Chinatown, with a excursion to the old Italian neighborhood. Don't miss the Circle Line for a water trip around Manhattan Island- bring warm jackets in the colder months and ponchos it you take the splashy version- you will get soaked.
Events and shows
We love the ballet, dance, symphony, opera, early music, folk music, music from other cultures and it is all to be found in NYC at almost any time. The museums are fabulous- yes go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art but don't miss out on the many, many others- the Guggenheim, the Frick, the Brooklyn Museum, the NY Historical Society, the Museum of the City of NY, etc. Be sure to take in the Museum of Natural History and the Planetarium. We are not much into Broadway shows or coffee houses (anymore, we are in our 70s) but they are legendary.
Outdoors or beach
Don't forget Central Park, Riverside Park and all the other ones- particularly at the tip of Manhattan- Battery, Fulton Street, etc. Walk everywhere! You can get to some the nearby beaches by public transport.

“Good value”

Hotel in great spot. train stations are 2 blocks north or 5 blocks south for express. Room was largest I've had in Manhattan, plus there was a small fridge. Cold breeze blowing in from window Air Conditioner so we threw a towel over it to stop the wind from coming in. Other than that, room was comfy. Water pressure in shower good, lots of hot water. Room was on 2nd floor facing street. Single pane windows don't keep out the street sounds, but I find the city sound personally keep me awake anyway every visit. Would totally recommend.
