Navasota, on the Navasota River in southeast Texas, is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Bryan-College Station. In 2005, it was designated by the Texas Legislature as The Blues Capital of Texas, in honor of the late Navasota native and blues musician, Mance Lipscomb. Blues Alley keeps this heritage alive. Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, the birthplace of Texas independence, is located in nearby Washington.
