The Nara Hotel was a bit of a splurge for us, but was well worth it! It is in the park that runs through the middle of Nara and easy walking distance to temples, museums, and the Nara-machi shopping district.
Our room was in the new wing and was larger than our master bedroom at home. It was quiet, lovely and luxurious. The restaurants in the hotel are overpriced, especially for the set menus, but so are most hotel restaurants we have found. We did eat a la carte in the Japanese restaurant at the hotel and it was actually almost reasonable and the food and service were great.
Our waitress spoke English well, but you cannot rely on the front desk to necessarily have someone who can speak English. They do bend over backwards to be accommodating here, but they really do need to have a concierge desk with someone who can speak other languages. There was certainly no shortage of personnel at the hotel, so it could be easily done.
All in all, this was a lovely place to stay for a couple of days in a must-see town.

I loved this little town. The hotel is located in the center of an adorable local street. There are shops all down the strip. Coco's curry house is located at a nearby intersection (this is a must eat place in Japan). This town is near plenty of interesting shrines and temples, including Daibutsu (the biggest Buddha in Japan). Also there are deer that you can feed and pet in the near by park. As for the hotel, it was simple but pleasant. There was nothing to complain about. The staff understood English and were very friendly.
Booked over the net and didn't realise it was a ryokan hotel. Everything was exceptional. Located next to the major park/tourist attraction of Nara, very short walk to Nara station and the BEST onsen I have found so far. Staff were as you expect good staff to be without being over the top. Absolutely brilliant! Don't go there this hotel is all mine!!!!
Don't be put off when you enter and find a lobby that needs some love and updating. The room was modern and super clean. The ofuro was also updated. They spoke a bit of English and helped us pick a fabulous place to eat. It was a wonderful stay. Close to station, Nara park and eating. Everything right at your fingers tips even with 3 children (2 four year olds) we were able to walk every where no problem. Well worth the money.
I had a great experience with this hotel. The location, directly across the street from the Nara station, was perfect for train travel. It was a little walk to the Kintetsu Nara line but there are always taxis and buses available at Nara station. It's near the long shopping street that leads to Nara Deer park and many temples and shrines. The staff had limited English ability but was extremely helpful and very kind. If they couldn't help you, they would find someone who could. The room was small but had everything I needed. Perfect! I would definitely stay at Sun Hotel again if I ever return to Nara.
