The staff here is absolutely wonderful. They were so kind and helpful. We had one of the smaller rooms, but still way more spacious than something in Tokyo within our price range. The room and private bath were so beautiful. We ordered the Japanese dinner and breakfast and it is a must if you stay here! You’ll try foods authentic to Nara specifically and the amount you receive is more than plenty. Would highly recommend this stay to anyone even for just one night, as that is what we did to relax in the middle of our busy trip.

We loved the proximity to Nara Park and feeding the deer. The rooms and food was amazing. Great onsen, and of course playing with the deer was best for kids.

All of the staff are genuinely kind and wonderful. Lovely hotel close to Todai-Ji temple and all the deer you can handle. Nara is a magical place.

This is a nice small boutique hotel with an attentive staff. My family of three, which included my wife and our young adult daughter, had been staying in more western-style hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto with 3 beds. Because of that, I was a little surprised when we arrived here and discovered a tatami room with a table and chairs and no beds or futons. What the staff explained is that when we wished to sleep we should notify them and they would come and remove the table and put down the futons. The process worked well but it did take some getting used to. They do have a very nice breakfast and onsite onsen.

From the moment we steped on property they went above and beyond from the tea at check in to dinner and arranging a private night tour which we highly recommend to anyone in the area. Guide was funny, informative and a great photographer best hotel and tour ive ever taken!

The staff and amenities were excellent. The New Year breakfast menu was a nice treat and a wonderful way to experience Japanese New Year. Todaiji and other popular sightseeing spots are walking distance from the hotel.

The staff here are absolutely phenomenal. When I dropped off my luggage earlier in the day, they gave me a cup of yuzu tea, a homemade map of the area, crackers for the deer, and made some personalized sightseeing recommendations. After I checked in later that evening, the staff gave me a tour of the facility and made more detailed recommendations about routes, transportation, etc., for my sightseeing plans the next day. The kaiseki dinners and washoku breakfasts were both top-notch. The rooms themselves were slightly dated, even by ryokan standards, but the excellent service from the staff more than made up for it. I will absolutely stay here again if in Nara.

A special stay in Nara
The sweetest and most caring staff really want to make you feel special in Nara and as their guest. An authentic experience with free onsen use and lovely rooms with futons , seating area and beautiful room screens Great restaurant recommendations and best meal of our stay right down the street (if you like raman be sure to ask!)

Japanese experience at its finest.
Amazing histrorical Japan feeling and atmosphete. Superlative service and attentivenrsd. Bathroom was rather (very) small. The best traditional Japanese breakfast imaginable. Overall the most cuturally immersive Japenese experience possible.

I usually do not leave reviews but I was so impressed with this property. The Japanese style rooms were wonderful, just be prepared to sleep on a futon on the floor. Very comfortable. The staff were exceptional, by far the best service I have had anywhere. I would highly recommend a visit to Nara and if I am ever fortunate enough to make it back would gladly stay at Hotel New Wakasa again.

We had an amazing time at New Wakasa hotel! Staff were so friendly and helpful and gave us great advice on what we should see and do in Nara. I would love to stay here again, the room was spacious, clean and perfect for our stay. Thank you so much for all your help!

The service from check in was great. We booked our room with breakfast and dinner included and dinner was impressive. They even have a really entertaining magician going around tables to show tricks. Rooms are small and 3 pax is quite tight as we have 3 big luggages. Overall a great stay, just less than satisfactory service from one staff. Otherwise we are happy with this hotel!

We had multiple issues with the hotel management. I clarified months before we arrived that we had three people. The room we paid for sleeps five. The management sent an e-mail acknowledging we had three guests in the room. Then days before we arrived they sent an e-mail acknowledging the three guest and offering us a room in their annex hotel as a free upgrade. I did not want to change rooms. When we arrived to check in they told us it would be an extra $200 for the third person. It took a call to Orbitz to get it straightened out. I do not recommend this hotel. The room was nice, but the hassle was not worth it. Stay in Kyoto and do Nara as a day trip.

Great place to experience a ryokan!
Lovely hotel very near the main sites of Nara. I traveled with my 7 year old and he loved sleeping on a futon and experiencing a Japanese public bath. The staff was lovely and did a great job of understanding my horrible Japanese! Great introduction to Japanese culture for someone who might be a little nervous to depart from Western-style hotel.

Terrible and disrespectful customer service. Reception called me in the room 3 times to remind me about my checkout at 10:00am. Around 10:15am someone knocked my door to remind me again. They were literally kicking me out. Do the right service, call your customer and explain that checkout is at 10:00am and if customer wants to stay more there is an extra charge. It's customer's decision if he wants to stay more or not. You don't have to call him 3 times. Unacceptable ! Room ok, bad breakfast, great location ! Terrible customer service

We stayed in a japanese style room.The staffs were very polite and served us a tea while we waited for check in. A very detailed orientation of the hotel was given to us. Upon checkout, we were given a postcard of our photo as a souvenir. Overall, we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay. Definitely worth going back again in the future.

It is fine if you arent looking for a real ryokan
This Japanese hotel with ryokan experience and reasonable cost really attracted us to stay one night in nara, if it wasnt for the special experience, we were more than happy to go for a day trip in nara then head to our destination city. Staff were friendly but not too professional, the room wasnt too comfortable, especially unhappy about the hard pillows. Details in the room were not up to standard for a 4 star hotel, which you would expect given the price and reviews....

We had reserved a non smoking room and it was confirmed Little did i know that all rooms are smoking The room we were given as soon as we entered had to exit because it had so much of smoke ordor. We asked to change the room but all rooms are smoking. The other room was better. In the night the rooms next doors smoked cigars and the smoke would Get in our roomfrom underneath the door If you some is non smoker should not stay there. Also we ordered Japanese breakfast and one if us asked for coffee instead of tea they said no and charged us for coffee one cup very very expensive and no refills it was a small cup too The location is nice

It was absolutely amazing! With hot springs and meals included, it was fantastic, might be slightly biased as my boyfriend proposed to me here, but it was still amazing. We had one Japanese style breakfast and then decided it was a bit much to try new things in the morning and be scared of not liking them so decided to go with the western style on the second day! Fantastic Ryokan, wonderful service!

Awesome Japanese Ryokan
Only if you are familiar with staying at a Japanese style hotel (Ryokan) this is a great place to stay. Rooms are spacious and clean. Japanese style dinner is pricey but the breakfast is terrific. Location also has public Onsen on site (not a hot spring) and also a private bath (hot tub..American style) that is rather small but perfect for 2 people. Very romantic roof top deck for 360 degree views of Nara...Not too far from Nara Park.

Great spot for a taste of Japan
Really enjoyed our first stay in a ryokan. Room was spacious and the staff were lovely. We had dinner there one night and that was a great experience - food was excellent. The hotel is very handy to Toda-ji and a short walk from the town.

Love this place!
This place was lovely! After staying at American hotels in Tokyo, it was a treat to get the traditional Japanese experience at New Wasaka. The Japanese baths downstairs were amazing, the traditional breakfast was delicious, and the room clean & comfortable. Friendly staff! Would stay there again, 100%.
