“Gone downhill; Over-priced; Hard beds”

I stayed at this hotel two years ago when it was a Sofitel. It is an easy walk from the train station. It has now changed and is a Mercure, which is a group which includes Sofitel, Novotel, etc. I did not think this would matter much, but I am sorry to say that it really does. The main difference is the mattress. The bed was hard-- kind of a thin mattress on a board. I could not sleep. I asked about a softer mattress; I was shown a room where the mattress was only slightly better, but they would charge me quite a bit more for an "upgrade." I already felt I was being overcharged (especially as compared with my earlier stays). The check in person was efficient but cold whereas the earlier staff had been very friendly and gracious. Breakfast was not included, whereas last time they had a great buffet. Last, the coffee in the room was not complimentary, was over-priced and marginally drinkable. What a change and what a disappointment. We will have to find a different hotel for our Nagoya stays.
