The hotel was O.K. the metro and tram were close by but we had to wait for our room, it was not ready until 4:00 P.M.,and we just wanted a shower and to change after travelling all day. We also got stuck on the 5th floor with no elevator.

The hotel is located close to Canebiere, traditionally the "Champs-Elysees" of Marseille, although today it gives more of a feel of being in North Africa with many places purely frequented by immigrants. This is not really a problem, as people are friendly enough. The positive thing is that the hotel is close to Vieux-Port, the old harbour district as well as being well-served by public transport; tram and metro close by. There are also several shops nearby with restaurants in the Vieux-Port area.
The hotel itself is doubling as student accommodation, but I have to say that this is excellent accommodation. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable, kitchen and bathroom modern and clean.
The kitchen is small, so not much cooking can be done, but still enough for a simple dinner or breakfast.
We were very happy with our stay at Hotel Ryad in Marseille. That said, I should clarify that we asked to change our first room which was quite austere and required mounting 80 steps ( no elevator) to a more expensive but very pleasant and quiet room in back. The staff was most obliging. Although others have criticized the neighborhood and there were prostitutes in the street outside, we did not feel at all threatened and enjoyed the "Marseille" atmosphere. We did not take the breakfast because it seems expensive and we found a wonderful cafe nearby.

"If you are getting a single room, DO NOT stay here"
This is hands down the worst place I have ever stayed. Loud, terrible shared shower and toilet facilities, smelly, a mattress that didn't quite stay on the bed... there is no love and care present in this hotel - everything looks old and wasting away. In saying that, the double rooms with private bathroom facilities looked okay (maybe?), I think perhaps they just don't value their solo travellers. Location was good - close to St Charles train station and an easy walk to the port. Marseille is a dump though - don't go there.
Room is comfortable but small, everything is clean, towels are provided. Bathroom is shared with a few other rooms. Area isn't great but not terrible either, very close to everything, including train station. Staff are very helpful!
This was my second stay here, which was better than the first. All reception staff spoke English and were very friendly and helpful. My room was on the street side, with a balcony, but I heard no street noise due to the double pane glass. The bed was super comfy, with extra pillows. The bathroom was large, with lots of towels and toiletries. Complimentary bottled water was also provided. Breakfast offered a variety of foods; breads, cheese, ham, cereals, jams, croissants, yogurts, fresh fruit, juices, coffee and tea. Great that the service continued to noon for the late sleepers, like me. There is a rental bicycle rack in front of the hotel for those who are willing to pedal the hilly streets. Tons of restaurants nearby, from cheap eats to high end. There is a new supermarket, U Express, as you take a right out of the hotel door and walk a short distance. It offers ready made food, fresh fruits, alcohol and anything else you may need.
Literally right outside the railway station (which is also where airport bus brings you to). A short walk gets you anywhere you may wish to visit in Marseilles. Did not need to take underground or trams at all.
Very friendly staff, no problems with speaking English and everything as wanted.

As expected. Very similar and consistent hotel as with others in the chain. It is basic but clean and accessible. Excellent location 'on top of the station' St Charles. Makes a great stay if you need to get an early morning train or bus to the airport. Also easy to get to decent quick food outlets in the station. Staff speak both English and French. The only down side was that our shower tray was broken at the bottom. We were only staying the night so not a problem also the room wasn't ready till 12.30 when it was quoted as 12 and the dirty drinks and food from previous occupants was left outside our room all day. Only a ten minute walk down a main road to the Old Port.
