“Jazz St Denis - one night stay!”
I was looking for an inexpensive place to spend a night near downtown Montreal. The Jazz St. Denis Hostel was just what I was looking for. Simple furnishings in Montreal's Latin Quarter - with much night life. I had a great beer at the nearby L’Amère à Boire brew/pub, 2049 Rue St Denis. I needed to be downtown early in the morning and this Hostel was 5 minutes away - close to the main subway station.
“Deluxe room is the best!”
The Deluxe room we stayed in was wonderful with lots of old Montreal character.
“Perfect if you have low standards and are in a pinch!”
You get what you pay for and I didn't pay a lot so I definitely didn't get a lot. The bed was comfortable enough, although it was right in front of the dorm room door and there was traffic in and out all night. Bring ear plugs and a sleep mask if you stay at this hostel. Don't bank on the breakfast, there wasn't coffee, the machine was old and broken. The cereal was left out for hours and was stale. No bread, so all they had was peanut butter from a jar. The guest frig was one of those small dorm room frigs, it didn't fit anything, all my yogurt that I brought went bad. Reception isn't 24/7, it closes down at midnight and reopens at 8am. The room and bathroom was moderately clean, so I'll give them that. But, the lounge room was very dirty, I was afraid to sit down or touch anything. The security is terrible!! The dorm room door was never locked and often wide open with no one inside and the hostel entrance is on a combination lock with a code that was the same all three days. Parking cost me 38$ for the weekend and was 3 blocks away. Parking on the street is impossible to find at night. Organization for bed assignments was bad and people were found sleeping in other people's beds. Just remember if you stay here that this is a hostel in a party neighborhood. Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed.
“Decent for a cheaper place to stay”
If you are looking for a cheaper place to stay this one is not bad. We stayed in the Studio Suite which is about as big as a decent sized closet. However things appeared clean which was good. My thought is they should invest in some fans or air conditioning as in the summer it was hot and not very comfortable without fans. The TV is useless if you do not speak French as there is mostly only french channels. They should invest in a dvd player and have movies there. I did not like that towels and things were not upkept as we stayed 3 nights and no one changed our towels or things. I do not recommend getting the room with the bathroom not attached as we found it to be inconvenient. Overall, as long as you are not spending much time in the hostel it self then it is a cheap place to crash and appears to be clean. Oh except the blankets were not a good choice for a hotel/hostel as they were fleece and peoples hairs were stuck in them which was gross. Bottom line, Cheap, fairly clean, and close to subways. If you are fussy then I reccomend spending a little more money on something fancier. If you just need a cheap place to stay or crash, then this is the place for you.
“Forget about the breakfast and the lounge”
If you just want to go there to sleep and shower, that is fine. rather then that, forget about the nasty lounge that looks like a homeless shelter. it looks like they picked off their furniture from the side of the streets during garbage day, and the breakfast was like toast and peanut butter that were prob. expired and were in the nastiest room. the only good thing in that room was the flat screen TV.
“Trying a Hostel in Montreal”
I need to spend the occasional night in Montreal - usually arriving late and leaving early. I am not interested in paying high prices for a place to sleep and then leave. I tried out Montreal's Le Jazz St-Denis hostel and it was great. The room and room-mates were pleasant. The hotel close to down town and my destination. The receptionist was nice, fully bilingual and we had a nice chat about hostels in Japan. I absolutely recommend Le Jazz St-Denis.
“Charming choice in Montreal”
A good choice for romantic people who appreciate the charm of an older building and a safe, but somewhat run-down neighborhood. The room was great, large with a jacuzzi at one end and sitting area at the other. Air conditioning was quiet and effective. Good bed. Windows may be opened. Microwave and WiFi. The narrow stairs with steps of uneven height could be a challenge to anyone with leg/balance issues or with large luggage pieces. The communal kitchen in an annex looked run-down, but at closer inspection was clean and functional. Good place to meet other travelers. 2-3 blocks to sub-way. With multiple-night stays, rooms are cleaned only on request, a system I like. Most of the staff - all young people - were helpful, but the desk was not always manned at 8 a.m. as posted.
“Vish”
Stay at Le Jazz St Dennis was an more than the excellent value for money, we were three in a room with a double and single bed. The condition of the room was good with an attached shower, toilet, surprisingly Freezer and a phone. General kitchen with basic stuff present. The sorroundings are very vibrant with lots of restaurants and students, looks colourfull. May be difficult to sleep for a early sleeper. I think even families can stay with kids Better than the Downtown Novotel who will rip you off for drinking water, telephone and etc basic stuff
“Just what I needed”
Wanted to do a trip to Montreal on the cheap. Jazz St. Denis was perfect. Hostel style took a day or so to get used to, but there was no way to beat the price or convenience. They worked very well with my arrival and departure schedule. I arrived at 2 am on a weekday and had no problem getting inside and finding my bed. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful. It is a bit of a walk from public transportation (<10 min) which doesn't make a difference unless the weather is bad. Then you might reconsider the location. Otherwise, it was perfect. Would definitely stay there again.
“Booked for 2 nights, left after the 1st night”
This is not a hotel. It is bunk bed room where 12 people (man and women) share a single room. Can't sleep at night, too noisy!
