Hotel used for conferences which means parts of hotel out of bounds. Need to pay for wifi and rooms are noisy

Beautiful and well maintained hotel.

Posted 22-Jul-2015
Pros: Very spacious and nicely decorated room and bathroom.
Felt like vacation from the moment you walked into the beautiful lobby with trees growing in it.

Location is nice

Posted 21-Jul-2015
Pros: Clean, friendly staff, the room was very nice and the restaurant had a nice place to dine.
Cons: Include Valet to the costs?
Location: I didn't get to do this but I did notice the pier from my window and I imagine that could be fun to visit next time.
I wanted a nice overnight experience in Monterrey where I felt safe and would have a good view of the ocean. I was a beautiful and safe place to stay but the "ocean view" was less than what I had hoped given the pictures I saw on the website. I do have to admit my check in time could have been the problem which left me with the "left-overs" The overall experience would lead me to stay there again.

Nice hotel!

Posted 19-Jul-2015
Pros: The rooms were attractive and comfortable. The windows open, and the rooms have plenty of air circulation. Modern amenities.
Cons: The property around the outside of the hotel could have been swept and maintained better.
Location: Portola is a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf and several good restaurants that are appropriate for families. Views are lovely and serene.
We thought Portola was a nice, upscale - but not too upscale - hotel. It's well maintained with a lovely, relaxing lobby and very helpful staff.

Expensive and dated

Posted 19-Jul-2015
This is a busy and large hotel located next to Fisherman's Wharf. The room was adequate but dated and the bed was particularly in need of replacement. Fortunately, the hotel staff was serviceable. The price was disproportionate to the quality of the lodging. For tourists, a hotel located near Cannery Row would be a better choice.

Beautiful hotel in centre of Monterey bay.

Posted 18-Jul-2015
This is beautiful hotel with white shutters on the windows and named after one of the founding fathers of the town. When they built the hotel they kept trees inside the reception to match the street. The room was clean and comfortable, our only gripe was that wifi wasn't included in room price and would have been an additional $13.99 a night- which was quite steep! Anyway we very much enjoyed our stay here, there is an excellent Jazz Club restaurant called Cibo a short walk away too.

Great location

Posted 18-Jul-2015
Location! Location! Location! Really good, you guessed it, location. The hotel has valet parking for only $22 - super reasonable. Rooms are appropriate for the price. Take advantage of the spa if you can. If we ever return to Monterrey we'd stay here.

Beautiful hotel, but paying for parking & wifi?

Posted 18-Jul-2015
Pros: Beautiful. Nice, huge beds, very clean.
Cons: Free WIFI and free parking. Pool heated when it's very cold outside
Location: Nearby the aquarium, beach.
It's a beautiful hotel, friendly reception, nice gift when you arrive. Our room was very clean, huge beds, warm interior. What I don't understand is that you have to pay for parking (about 19 dollars) and that WIFI is expensive (9,95 a day). It isn't a cheap hotel, so I don't understand why internet is not free. We where happy that we could use the free internet from the hotel at the other side of the street! The pool is small and isn't heated so whe couldn't use it(it was too cold, especially for our two kids, 1 and 4 years old). We rather have a less exclusive but cosy familyhotel with all you need (parking, water, wifi) included.

Perfect.... IF you like to sweat and hate to sleep

Posted 18-Jul-2015
Pros: hot tub
Cons: NO Air conditioning
The staff was curious and the environment pleasing. BUT there is NO AIR CONDITIONING. This is very disappointing for a hotel of this price. The hotel is close to the highway and with the windows open, it is REALLY, REALLY LOUD, making for very difficult sleeping. The combination of the heat and noise makes slumber next to impossible. For a hotel of this price ($200+/night), the lack of AC is inexcusable. I've stayed up and down the CA coast and always had AC for hotels in this price range--even at other hotels in Monterey. If you are planning to visit in the summer months, go elsewhere. In you are visiting at other times of the year, it is probably ok.
