Not what I was expecting

Posted 09-Sep-2014
Pros: Staff
Cons: Parking, sound deadening
Location: Not much. Had to pretty much drive everywhere. Good breakfast place across the street, The Wild Plum.
My wife and I have visited Monterey at least a dozen time in the years we have been married. We have never stayed at the same place twice. We love to try new things to see what we are missing. We had just been in Monterey in February of this year and really like the hotel we stayed at. This time though, I wanted something special for my wife so, being unable to afford the real high end places over there, I popped for a high-mid priced location. For 2 nights our bill for the room and taxes was a bit over $400.00. When we first arrived, the desk clerk said that we had been upgraded to a premium room for no extra charge. How nice I thought. This room was the exact same room that was in the picture of the room I booked! Identical, no upgrade. Don't get me wrong, the room was nice and clean, but there was a bed, a TV, and a tiny refrigerator, nothing more. The bed was hard, the pillows were tiny and felt like marshmallows and our premium room faced one of the busiest streets in Monterey, even though I told the clerk I wanted their quietest room. Again, we only had other hotels we have stayed at to compare to, but the last hotel we stayed at was 1/3 less price, better location and gave us a delicious continental breakfast that the Abrego doesn't. All in all, we won't stay here again.

Pros: Good size room with nice amenities.
Cons: Bath fan didn't work, so little stuffy.
Location: Downtown, close to fisherman's wharf, shopping and dinning.

Good spot out of the way

Posted 19-Aug-2014
Pros: good quiet position - easy to find and short walk into town
Cons: Pool was on small side with only a few loungers
Location: Carmel is a short drive away and Monterey town is a short walk ... longer if you want to go down to Cannery Row
Hotel is in good spot just out of the town centre with just a 10 min walk to the front - stayed 2 nights on trip and was a great position

Would not recommend

Posted 11-Aug-2014
Pros: Conveninetly located. Pretty to look at
Cons: Customer service.
First of all, I traveled with my 92 year old mother. I had asked for a ground floor room to accommodate my mother but the front desk said all ground floor rooms were taken. (We spoke to Front Desk at 9 am but could not register until 4pm that day- by then all the ground floor rooms were assigned). The building had NO elevator and there were 15 steep steps to climb. We had a terrible time trying to carry our luggage up the 15 stairs. My mom almost fell. There were no bell hops around to assist. Second, although the bathrooms look pretty, there is absolutely NO counter space. We had to put our tolietires on top of the toilet or on the floor beside the toilet. Who designed this? A Man, I'll bet. Third, there are no vending machines. If you want a soda you have to go Building 1 to buy from the front desk. (We were in Bldg 4). Not convenient at all.

Close to town

Posted 11-Aug-2014
Not close to water but convenient to town and restaurants. Tiny rooms but very nicely decorated. Spent until midnight listening to footsteps on 2nd floor, not much soundproofing. Nice looking property but on a main street.

Nice hotel in a motel style. Room was very clean and modern, but a bit small. We walked to the downtown area, but it does take about 10-15 minutes. Loved the second sink (bar sink?) and mirror in the room because it made getting ready for the day super fast. It was too warm to use the fireplace, but it looked lovely! We could definitely hear neighbor rooms' doors slamming in the morning, but otherwise we couldn't hear the other rooms.

Good hotel close to the harbour

Posted 10-Aug-2014
Pros: Good, clean accommodation with parking at a good price. Pool and hot tub.
Location: Walking distance to harbour/pier but longer walk to Cannery Row.
Stayed here one night as travelling down the coast from San Francisco to LA. Good quality hotel with pool, hot tub and free parking. Room was clean and comfortable and a good size. Helpful staff.
