“Basic, clean”
The Carmel Lodge is a very basic hotel. It serves the purpose of providing you a place to sleep and keep your luggage quite well. It's not luxurious, but it's clean and all facilities work as advertised. Internet access was complementary, and the Lodge has an agreement with the restaurant next door to provide a free continental breakfast or 25% off the breakfast menu.
“Convenient Carmel Getaway”
Clean Carmel Lodge is perfect for a weekend getaway...it is only 2 blocks from the famed Ocean Avenue and about 10 minute walk to the beach. The hotel uses a next-door cafe "Simply Cynthia's" for breakfast and they offer a nice menu with eggs, toast, French toast, oatmeal, etc. In the neighborhood is Hog's Breath Inn (Clint Eastwood's restaurant & bar) and there are plenty of galleries & shops & other restaurants within walking distance. Parking (which is hard to come by in Carmel) is adequate and is located inside the hotel area. Friendly staff with local Carmel maps. Good for families with children too.
“Unexpected Carmel Gem”
First of all the location is great, a couple of blocks from the main downtown so it is quiet at night. Slept with the private balcony doors open. The rooms are on the small side but have comfy king beds. Our rate included wifi and breakfast- a surprise. We would go back again. The staff was helpful and friendly.
“Rooms vary considerably.”
Had previously stayed at this hotel in a large, very comfortable room. On the second visit, we were in a different room in what appeared to be an older section of the lodge and the room was small, difficult to access (climb narrow stairs, down narrow hallway). Nice location in the center of Carmel; good restaurants all around. Nice breakfast included in the room rate at an adjacent restaurant. Ask for rooms facing the main parking area on the lower level.
“Convenient location”
Hotel management seemed overwhelmed when I asked to change rooms due to musty room smell. They didn't know how to do this with an Expedia reservation. However, hotel service staff was exceptional is recleaning the room. Most comfortable bed I've had in a hotel. The only noise past 10 pm was the small restaurant across the street (clanging plates and glasses at closing). The complimentary breakfast at the restaurant was exceptional. The location was perfect for shopping in Carmel as well as walking to the ocean.
“Below Average”
The hotel was not very clean. The room was very drab, dingy and dated. The bed spread looked like it had not been washed in several months! The hotel location was very close to everything. Be careful, the hotel staff will try to charge you for parking when you try to cheek out! Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was very good.
“Very saisfying overall”
We stayed two days. We were happy overall.
“Not as advertised”
We were immediately disappointed upon arrival at this motel. It looked so nice in the pictures, but in reality is a very rundown establishment. The outside appearance is depressing. The stairs leading up to our floor (2nd) were unsafe (railings coming apart). There was a big hole/opening from the 2nd floor dropping down to the bottom that any curious child could easily fall through. The hallway "lounge" from the office to the rooms was so dingy I can't imagine anyone wanting to linger. The room was a tad better. The bed was comfortable (my husband loved it). Window crank fell off. Toilet wobbled. Bathroom door didn't close. Very musty, mildewy smell in room. All around an unpleasant experience. We were scheduled to stay for 2 nights but checked out after one. Desk staff was pleasant and accommodating, letting us out of our reservation with no penalty.
“Carmel Lodge”
We celebrated our 30th anniversary in Carmel and chose to stay at the Lodge based on it's price and the mostly positive reviews listed in Expedia. We reserved / prepaid for a queen premium room for 3 nights, but were upgraded to king premium room upon our arrival by the most pleasant and repeatedly helpful front desk clerk. He also booked us a table at the lovely Casinova restaurant just across the side street from the Lodge. He also recommended various other places for breakfasts and walking routes, etc. It was our first visit to Carmel so his advice was very helpful and much appreciated. Our room was large and comfortable. Everything worked and the day it rained we enjoyed reading and watching Wimbleton in the room. The only two items missing were a microwave and a fireplace. Most premium rooms in nearby Monteray come with fireplaces. I read that some of the rooms at the Lodge are quite small. I did not enter any of these, but many of the "regular" rooms appeared much smaller than our premium one. The Lodge did charge $10 per day to park our car in their lot next to our room. We have never been charged a parking fee where we have stayed in Monteray. The Lodge's location is only a block from the main street of Carmel. It was easy to walk all over Carmel and down to the beautiful Carmel beach from the Lodge.
“not impressed”
despite "lodge" in the name, this is basically a motel. could have stayed at a Holiday Inn for cheaper with more amenities (fridge, etc). got a pretty good discount on this place but it was still not worth the price.
