“A little Milan goes a long way.”

Nice little hotel in the suburbs of Milan. Kind and generous owners and a chihuahua that gaurds the sofa by the tv in the lounge. I would have liked to stay longer.

Area recommendations

Just wander, explore. There is a new surprise on every corner. Go in the off season, Milan is huge and heavily populated. Get out of the city and experience modern Italy like a local.

When to go

Go in the "shoulder" or "off" seasons. Add a couple hundred thousand tourists to a city the size of chicago and you get long lines and locals who are tired of tired foreigners.

Getting there

Malpensa airport (well outside of Milan) is modern and feature rich. There are over a dozen ways to get to Milano Centrale from the airport. I took the metro, a clean $4 adventure that wisked me to the center of Milan in about 30min. Other options include shuttle busses(think greyhound), rental cars, taxis and commuter rail (think amtrack).

Getting around

Europes public transport system is a dream once you've learned how to use it. The best thing you can do is find the Tourist Information Office (look for the blue circle with a lower case "i" and follow the arrows). They speak every language on earth and will give you maps of the various transit systems (rail, metro, tram, bus and bike rental) with directions to get you started. Tickets for local transit are on the honor system. Validate your ticket at the yellow or orange boxes and hop on. Do not get caught without a validated ticket! The fine is 80euro. No conductor comes around, but there are cameras everywhere.

What to pack

Pack everything you think you will need and then throw out half of that. For a five day trip I took everything I needed in a carry-on convertible suitcase/backpack. The hotels provide hair dryers and toiletries (most for free). In stead of carrying liquids on and international flight, plan to spend your first morning at the CO-OP shopping for toothpaste and deodorant. It's a cool cultural experience and the deli will steal your heart.

Must see

Anything away from the tourist spots. Meet the real Italians, not just the tour guides. Check out that walk-up pastry shop. Always start by speaking the local language the best you can. Most Italians will start speaking "a little" english after that. Europeans have a passion for life, love, food and friends. Go be a friend and you'll bring home so much more than pictures and trinkettes.
