Room was adequate, perhaps a bit more expensive than the amenities warrant, but the location is excellent. I felt safe and secure at the hotel, even if the doors to the rooms didn't have the best of locks. It would be nice if the free wifi extended into the rooms, but there are couches and chairs to use in the lobby areas while connecting online. Staff was friendly. I was there at peak time, just after Christmas, and though it's not my first choice of hotels in Merida, it served me decently.

Location: 2 blocks from the historic centre
A basic hotel, past its best, but quite comfortable, interesting decor.

SATISFIED

The hotel fullfilled our requirements for a clean comfortable stay during our stay in Merida where we were working, not a luxury place but clean and comfortable, reasonable price.

Good location off central square.

Clean, historical, friendly staff, Easy walk to central locations. Near cathedral and museums. Fascinating town and this hotel provides easy access. Staff is very friendly, but not fluent in English. Basic Spanish language helped me a lot. We asked to change rooms because of noise from the pool and the staff was extremely friendly and polite, and very helpful. They were honestly concerned about our comfort and happiness. Unfortunately, I can't really recommend their restaurant. We ate there more than once for convenience. Food is passable. They don't serve mixed drinks. This is an economical hotel, and I agree with Expedia's rating.

Great location and helpful staff

The hotel was great. Alex, the front desk guy, was very helpful and always greeted us with a warm smile. I was a little disappointed that the spa on the hotel was not working, but other than that the stay was great. The room was big and spacious, with a lot of mirrors. I understand it was one of the newer rooms. The staff were friendly and the hotel is located in the most ideal area of the city.

Good place for the money. Excellent location in the historic downtown. Would definitely do it again!

For the price, the hotel was I had expected. It's over 100 yrs old, but it's been remodeled to add amenities like A/C, cable, phone, and an elevator. The best part is that everything worked! well, the hot water took a while to reach my shower, but then, in a 100+ degree weather, I don't think you'd be after hot water. Oh, free wi-fi is available at the lobby area. Staying at this hotel was a last minute thing. To avoid driving 2 hrs at night (big NO in Mexico) I got on my cell (through free wi-fi at a near park) at 5PM and made the reservation. I then went to a local restaurant-bar (Tucho's, 1 block from hotel) with awesome Yucatecan "botana", had a couple of drinks, enjoyed the live show, then went to the hotel. When I got there (6PM), they already had my reservation. I simply registered and went to my room. The staff was very friendly and nice. The only issue I had was the lack of parking. Granted, they're right smack downtown, with historic 100+ year old buildings all around them, so most likely nobody would let them tear down a surrouding building to have a parking lot (imagine the cost!). To deal with this limitation, they offer free parking at a lot about 1 block away, but only from 8PM to 8AM. You also need to be sure you don't need your car after hours because the lot closes at 11PM and there's NO way to get to your car until 7AM. I needed to leave at 5:30AM, so I ended up parking on the street, where you can leave your car after 9PM, but must move it before 7AM.

One of Merida's Best Locations

Posted 14-Jul-2010
Excellent option for a traveller like me, who was looking to stay in the city's historic center without paying a fortune and be able to walk to several places of interests, like some of the museums, the main park (zócalo), the Olimpo Cultural Center, etc. Trips to the main Mayan ruins can be easily arranged through the hotel's tourism desk on a short notice. Furthermore, Hotel Colón is surrounded by many restaurants serving Yucatecan food and other serving continental food (there is even a Burger King two blocks away!), and by many convenience stores where you can find almost everything that you might need, including toileteries, snacks and all kind of beverages (tap water is to be avoided at any cost). Two of the main bus stations are also at a walking distance (including those for buses to Cancún and Progreso, among many other destinations). My room was huge and quiet, and was kept reasonably clean. The staff at the reception desk was very kind and helpful.
