I hesitate to share my good fortune, but here you go. Because this place is still under renovation, they were offering absurd midweek cut rates. It was amazing! Lovely room with balcony facing the ocean, Adirondacks for sitting and sipping, comfortable bed, spacious bathroom with large tiled rain can shower, fridge, microwave...it was awesome. Nice beach, even.

The location of the hotel is excellent, just a few short blocks (uphill on the return) from the town center. Great view and attractive grounds. The room was spacious. Had a hard time finding the wall switch for an overhead lamp, camouflaged by a wall paper pattern. Other than that minor inconvenience two of us highly recommend Hill Top. And extra bonus for those of us older folks who remember was the wall of photos of the cast and crew of "Murder She Wrote".
We stayed for two nights and was very happy here. The hotel was clean with the walkway down to the beach. We spent time at the beach and it was quiet since this is kind of like a private beach and the scenery just takes your breath away. We loved it there. I called ahead before checking in to make sure if they have roll away bed and they did. They set it up in our room for us and it was $25 extra which I was happily to pay. We would definitely stay here again.
This was the third time we have stayed at the Mendocino Hotel in one of their shared bath units. Never have had an issue with the shared bath/shower but the units are small and we knew that before coming here. May see if a private bath with Queen bed suits us better next time even with the added cost.
Our room had a magnificent view of the wharf, rocky hillside and water. We really felt the power of nature. Rooms differ in views offered; something to take into consideration.
Staff was warm and attentive. Everything was top-notch in the room. Our one dissatisfaction was the quality of the breakfast; we ended up eating out our second day. That said, we would return without hesitation.

We check in a little early and waited for a ground floor room. We were glad we waited. The room was large and clean. The staff was friendly and we enjoyed having breakfast in the lobby and visited with staff. The motel welcomes pets and has a lot of pictures of their visiting pets in the lobby. The motel was close to nice restaurants and stores. We will stay here again.

"Staff really welcoming, view from room the best!"
Visiting California for the first time, we were delighted with the value for money given by Surf Inn. Loved the seating area overlooking sandbar and ocean, enjoyed the walk along the cliffs, but most of all appreciated the wonderful views from our room. Comfy bed, clean and well equipped room (even if slightly old fashioned in appearance) and wonderful staff.
The front desk person which was an attractive young woman knew all about the Paul Bunyan days going on. She recommended the North Beach Brewing Company for dinner and mentioned that it had the best clam chowder in town. She was right and the meal was excellent.
